TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

The electronic engine controls consist of the

  1. camshaft position (CMP) sensor.
  2. crankshaft position (CKP) sensor.
  3. cylinder head temperature (CHT) sensor.
  4. fuel rail pressure and temperature sensor.
  5. heated oxygen sensor (HO2S).
  6. catalyst monitor sensor.
  7. mass air flow (MAF) sensor.
  8. PCM.
  9. knock sensor (KS).

The CMP sensor

  1. sends the PCM a signal indicating camshaft position used for fuel synchronization.

The CKP sensor

  1. sends the PCM a signal indicating crankshaft position.
  2. is essential for calculating spark timing.

The CHT sensor

  1. is mounted into the wall of the cylinder head and is not connected to any coolant passages.
  2. sends a signal to the PCM indicating the cylinder head temperature. If the temperature exceeds approximately 121°C (250°F), the PCM disables 4 fuel injectors at a time. The PCM will alternate which fuel injectors are disabled every 32 engine cycles. The 4 cylinders that are not being fuel injected act as air pumps to aid in cooling the engine. If the temperature exceeds approximately 166°C (330°F), the PCM disables all of the fuel injectors until the engine temperature drops below approximately 154°C (310°F).
  3. If the engine reaches critical temperature, the following happens: The coolant temperature gauge pointer will read fully hot at approximately 121°C (250°F).

The fuel rail pressure and temperature sensor

  1. measures the pressure and temperature of the fuel rail and sends these signals to the PCM.
  2. uses intake manifold vacuum as a pressure reference.

The HO2S

  1. has the ability to create a voltage signal dependent on exhaust oxygen content.
  2. provides feedback information to the PCM used to calculate fuel delivery.

The catalyst monitor sensor(s)

  1. have the ability to create a voltage signal dependent on exhaust oxygen content.
  2. provide a voltage to the PCM used to calculate catalytic converter integrity.

The MAF sensor

  1. sends the PCM a signal indicating fresh air flow rate of air entering the engine.

The PCM carries out the following functions

  1. accepts input from various engine sensors to complete the required fuel flow rate necessary to maintain a prescribed air/fuel ratio throughout the entire operational range.
  2. outputs a command to the fuel injectors to meter the appropriate quantity of fuel.
  3. determines and compensates for the age of the vehicle and its uniqueness, also automatically senses and compensates for changes in altitude.

The KS

  1. is used to detect engine detonation.
  2. sends a voltage signal to the PCM.
  3. is able to provide a signal which retards the ignition timing, as necessary.

  1. Disconnect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connector.
  2. Remove the bolt and the CMP. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  3. Remove the CMP sensor.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/hoistjack/#jacking-and-lifting) article.
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/body-electrical/#battery-mounting-and-cables) article.
  3. Remove the drive belt from the A/C compressor pulley. For additional information, refer to «ACCESSORY DRIVE»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/accessory-drive-belts/#accessory-drive-system) article.
  4. Disconnect the A/C compressor field coil electrical connector.
  5. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.
  6. Remove the nut and detach the wiring harness clips. To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
  7. Loosen the 3 A/C compressor bolts enough to slide the compressor down one inch, allowing access for CKP sensor removal. To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  8. Remove the bolt and the CKP sensor. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  9. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

REMOVAL

  1. Retrieve the module configuration. Carry out the module configuration retrieval steps of the Programmable Module Installation procedure. For additional information, refer to «MODULE CONFIGURATION»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/communication-devices/#module-configuration-system) article.
  2. Release the clips and disconnect the 3 PCM electrical connectors.
  3. Remove the bolt and the PCM.

INSTALLATION

  1. Install the PCM and the bolt. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  2. Connect the 3 PCM electrical connectors and install the clips.
  3. Restore the module configuration. Carry out the module configuration restore steps of the Programmable Module Installation procedure. For additional information, refer to «MODULE CONFIGURATION»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/communication-devices/#module-configuration-system) article.
  4. Reprogram the passive anti-theft system (PATS). Carry out the Key Programming Using Two Programmed Keys procedure. For additional information, refer to «ANTI-THEFT - PATS»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#anti-theftsystem-pats) article.

  1. Disconnect the throttle position (TP) sensor electrical connector.
  2. Remove and discard the 2 screws and the TP sensor.
  1. Position the new TP sensor and install the 2 new screws. Tighten to 3 Nm (27 lb-in).
  2. Connect the TP sensor electrical connector.

  1. Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector.
  2. Remove the MAF sensor retaining screws. To install, tighten to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).
  3. Remove the MAF sensor.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S)

Material

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/hoistjack/#jacking-and-lifting) article.
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/body-electrical/#battery-mounting-and-cables) article.
  3. Disconnect the right side heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector.
  4. Disconnect the left side HO2S electrical connector.
  5. Using the special tool, remove the HO2S. To install, tighten to 41 Nm (30 lb-ft).
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Apply a light coat of anti-seize lubricant to the threads of the HO2S.

Catalyst Monitor Sensor

Material

  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/body-electrical/#battery-mounting-and-cables) article.
  3. Disconnect the catalyst monitor sensor electrical connector.
  4. Using the special tool, remove the catalyst monitor. To install, tighten to 41 Nm (30 lb-ft).
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Apply a light coat of anti-seize lubricant to the threads of the catalyst monitor sensor.

Fuel Rail Pressure and Temperature Sensor

  1. Release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/fuel-system/#fuel-system-general-information) article.
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/body-electrical/#battery-mounting-and-cables) article.
  3. Disconnect the fuel rail pressure and temperature sensor electrical connector.
  4. Disconnect the fuel rail pressure and temperature sensor vacuum connector.
  5. Remove the 2 bolts and the fuel rail pressure and temperature sensor. To install, tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).
  6. Remove and discard the O-ring seal. Install a new O-ring seal and lubricate it with clean engine oil.
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  2. Rotate the tensioner clockwise and position the accessory drive belt aside.
  3. Loosen the 2 lower generator bolts. To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  4. Remove the 2 generator bracket bolts and position the generator and bracket aside. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  5. Disconnect the cylinder head temperature (CHT) sensor electrical connector.
  6. Using a 19 mm (0.74 in) 12 point crows foot, remove and discard the CHT sensor. To install, tighten to 26 Nm (19 lb-ft).
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
