The interior lighting system consists of the following

The interior lighting system consists of 2 subsystems

The interior lamps are controlled by the LCM. The interior lamp subsystem consists of the footwell lamps, door lamps, dome/map lamps and the rear reading lamps.
The demand lamps are controlled by the LCM. The demand lamps subsystem consists of the glove compartment lamp, luggage compartment lamps, front map lamps, rear reading lamps, and the left and right vanity mirror lamps. Except for the luggage compartment lamps, each of these lamps are switched individually and use a separate ground circuit.
Both subsystems use the same power supply circuit through the central junction box (CJB) fuse 18 (15A).

Lighting Control Module (LCM)
This vehicle uses a LCM to control lighting functions. The LCM is a microprocessor-based module that controls several vehicle subsystems, responds to electrical input signals from various switches, sensors, and external modules and is located on the LH side of the instrument panel. The LCM subsystem functions include
- Headlamps with autolamps
- Turn signal lamps/hazard flasher lamps
- Cornering lamps
- Parking lamps
- Daytime running lamps (DRL)
- Interior lamps
- Demand lamps
- Battery saver
The LCM interfaces with the driver door module (DDM) via the standard corporate protocol (SCP) network for the illuminated entry feature.
The interior lamp is illuminated by pressing the individual interior lamp switch. The interior lamp is also illuminated by door ajar switches located in the door latches, when any door is opened. A theater lighting feature gradually increases or decreases the light intensity when opening or closing a door.
The dome/map lamp combination is located on each side of the interior lamp. The map lamps are operated independently of the interior lamp by 2 switches located on the interior lamps.
The interior lamps are illuminated by moving the instrument panel dimmer switch to the RH position until the dome lamps turn on.
The front map lamps are powered by the demand lighting circuit and the interior lighting circuit.
The rear passenger reading lamps are incorporated into the rear seat assist handles and are located over the rear door openings. These lamps are illuminated through power supplied by the LCM demand lighting circuit.
Interior lamps (controlled by the LCM) are activated by using the dome lamp switch (instant ON/OFF response) or when a door is ajar. The following lamps illuminate for interior lighting

Demand lighting includes lamps that are illuminated by the customer by directly actuating a switch. The front dome/map lamps are located in the overhead console. Each lamp is controlled by its own switch.
The following demand lamps are powered by the demand lighting output of the LCM
- Glove compartment lamp
- Vanity mirror lamp
- Luggage compartment lamp
- Front map lamps
- Rear reading lamps
Each lamp has a dedicated switch that closes to ground to illuminate the lamp.
The front map lamps are powered by either the demand lighting circuit or the interior lighting circuit, depending upon the position of the switch associated with each lamp. When the customer turns the front map lamp switch ON, the front map lamp is illuminated through power supplied by the LCM demand lighting circuit. If the customer moves the map lamp switch to the OFF position, the power from the LCM demand lighting circuit is interrupted and the lamp is reconnected to the interior lighting circuit.
The rear reading lamps are powered by either the interior lighting circuit or the demand lighting circuit.
The luggage compartment lamp is controlled by input from the trunk ajar switch, and is powered by the demand lighting output from the LCM, and is mounted near the center of the upper rear panel.
The glove compartment lamp system consists of a glove compartment lamp switch and wire and miniature bulb assembly. Opening the glove compartment door closes the switch which provides power to the glove compartment lamp switch and wire. The glove compartment lamp switch is grounded to the body sheet metal.
The vanity mirror lamp system consists of a switch and bulb assembly in the RH inside visor and the LH inside visor. Lifting the vanity mirror cover closes the vanity mirror lamp switch and provides power to the lamps.
The illuminated entry system is controlled by the LCM and provides interior lighting upon entry to the vehicle.
Interior lamps illuminate for 25 (±1) seconds which includes a theater lighting ramp-up time (0.5 second) after the doors are closed. This time interval does not include the theater lighting ramp-down time. Interior lamps will be turned off before the 25 (±1) second timeout if the ignition switch is turned to the RUN or ACC position.
The illuminated entry system has the following additions to accommodate the remote entry system: pressing the unlock button on the remote keyless entry (RKE) transmitter activates the illuminated entry system (with theater ramp-up). When the DDM detects a button has been pressed, it sends a signal on the SCP communication network activating the interior lamps. The LCM turns off the lamps by sensing an all doors locked signal.
The battery saver feature prevents excessive drain from loads inadvertently left on. When the ignition switch is turned OFF, power is interrupted to the interior lamps and headlamps (after a 10 minute timeout) and the demand lamps (after a 30 minute timeout).
The battery saver has the following inputs
- Luggage compartment lid door ajar switch
- Dome lamp switch
- Ignition switch status
- Illuminated entry signal
- Headlamp switch
- Driver/passenger door ajar entry switch
- RKE transmitter
- Door unlock, luggage compartment door release
The battery saver has the following outputs
- Interior lamps
- Headlamps
- Demand lamps
When the ignition switch is turned to OFF, the interior lamps interrupt timer, and demand lamps interrupt timer begin their timeout. The interrupt timer is a feature of the LCM. Power is available to the interior lamps, headlamps, and demand lamps during timeout. At the end of the 10 (±1) minute timeout period, the LCM disables power to the headlamps and interior lamps. At the end of the 30 minute timeout period, the LCM disables power to the demand lamps for interior lamps, if the dome switch is causing the interior lamps to be on, then timeout is 30 minutes. Turning the ignition switch to ACC or RUN terminates the battery saver feature by disabling the interrupt timers and reinstating power to the lamps.
A reset event sets the interior lamps interrupt timer to zero. The reset events for the interior lamps and the demand lamps interrupt timer are as follows
- Turning on the interior lamps using the dome lamp switch
- Opening any door (as detected by the door ajar lamp switches)
- Luggage compartment lid ajar
- Any RKE transmitter button pressed
- Headlamp switch change to park or headlamps ON position
When the panic button is pressed on a keyless entry transmitter, the panic alarm overrides the interior lamps, demand lamps and headlamps battery saver functions for the duration of the alarm.
Inspection and Verification
- Verify the customer concern.

- If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
- If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the data link connector (DLC).
- If the scan tool does not communicate with the VCM: Check the VCM connection to the vehicle. Check the scan tool connection to the VCM. Refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/communication-devices/#module-communications-network-system) article, No Power To The Scan Tool, to diagnose no communication with the scan tool.
- If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle: Verify the ignition key is in the ON position. Verify the scan tool operation with a known good vehicle. Refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/communication-devices/#module-communications-network-system) article to diagnose no response from the powertrain control module (PCM).
- Carry out the network test: If the scan tool responds with no communication for one or more modules, refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/communication-devices/#module-communications-network-system) article. If the network test passes, retrieve and record the continuous memory DTCs.
- Clear the continuous DTCs and carry out the self-test diagnostics for the LCM and the DDM.

Pinpoint Test A: The Interior Lamps Are Inoperative

Normal Operation
Fuse 18 (15A) in the central junction box (CJB) provides power through circuit 54 (LG/YE), to the lighting control module (LCM). The driver door module (DDM) monitors the LH front door ajar switch on circuit 867 (DB), and the remaining door ajar switches on circuit 627 (BK/OG). The door ajar switches provide a path to ground through circuit 57 (BK), indicating an open door. The DDM then signals the LCM to supply power to the interior lamps on circuit 53 (BK/LB). The interior lamps are grounded through circuit 57 (BK).

- A3 CHECK THE LCM FOR CORRECT OUTPUTS Access the active command mode for BATTERY SAVER & INTERIOR ENTRY. Trigger the LCM active command INTERIOR LAMPS ON. Do the interior lamps illuminate? YES : Go to A8 . NO : Go to A4 .
- A4 CHECK THE HEADLAMP DIMMER SWITCH OPERATION Operate the interior lamps using the dimmer control switch. Do the interior lamps illuminate? YES : Go to A8 . NO : Go to A5 .
- A5 CHECK CIRCUIT 54 (LG/YE) FOR AN OPEN Key in OFF position. Disconnect: LCM C2145c Measure the voltage between the LCM C2145c-4, circuit 54 (LG/YE), harness side and ground. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? YES : Go to A6 . NO : VERIFY the CJB fuse 18 (15A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- A6 CHECK CIRCUIT 53 (BK/LB) FOR AN OPEN NOTE: If the fuse fails, repair circuit 53 (BK/LB) for a short to ground. Connect a fused (10A) jumper wire between the LCM C2145c-4, circuit 54 (LG/YE), harness side and the LCM C2145c-5, circuit 53 (BK/LB), harness side. Do the interior lamps illuminate? YES : Go to A7 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

Pinpoint Test B: An Individual Interior Lamp Is Inoperative

The lighting control module (LCM) supplies voltage to the interior lamps on circuit 53 (BK/LB). The interior lamps are grounded through circuit 57 (BK).

Pinpoint Test C: The Interior Lamps Stay On Continuously

The driver door module (DDM) monitors the door ajar switch status for each door. When a door is open, the DDM signals the lighting control module (LCM) to supply power to the interior lamps. The interior lamps are powered through circuit 53 (BK/LB). The LCM also monitors the dome lamp switch status from the instrument panel dimmer switch through circuit 1034 (BK/WH). When the LCM recognizes that the dome lamps have been requested, the LCM supplies power to the interior lamps on circuit 53 (BK/LB).
DTC B1322 - sets when the DDM senses a short to ground on the driver door ajar input, circuit 867 (DB).
DTC B1566 - sets when the DDM senses a short to ground on any of the passenger door ajar inputs, circuit 627 (BK/OG).
DTC B1688 - sets when the LCM senses a short to ground on the dome lamp switch input, circuit 1034 (BK/WH).

- C1 CHECK THE DOOR AJAR PID STATUS WITH THE SCAN TOOL Key in ON position. Close all the doors. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: DDM Door Ajar PIDs Monitor the DDM door ajar PIDs. Do the door ajar PIDs match the door positions? YES : Go to C2 . NO : For the LH front door, go to C3 . For the RH front, RH rear or LH rear door, go to C5 .

Did the door ajar PID change with the switch disconnected? YES : INSTALL a new door ajar switch. - C4 CHECK CIRCUIT 867 (DB) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Key in OFF position. Disconnect: DDM C501a Measure the resistance between the DDM C501a-22, circuit 867 (DB), harness side and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? YES : Go to C13 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
- C5 CHECK THE RH FRONT DOOR AJAR SWITCH FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect: RH Front Door Ajar Switch C602a Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool: DDM Door Ajar PIDs Monitor the door ajar PIDs. Did the door ajar PID change with the switch disconnected? YES : INSTALL a new door ajar switch. Did the door ajar PID change with the switch disconnected? YES : INSTALL a new door ajar switch. Did the door ajar PID change with the switch disconnected? YES : INSTALL a new door ajar switch. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? YES : Go to C13 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? YES : Go to C12 . NO : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
- C11 CHECK CIRCUIT 53 (BK/LB) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Key in OFF position. Disconnect: LCM C2145c Observe the interior lamps. Are the interior lamps still illuminated? YES : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation. NO : Go to C12 .

The driver door module (DDM) monitors the LH front door ajar switch on circuit 867 (DB), and the remaining door ajar switches on circuit 627 (BK/OG). The door ajar switches provide a path for ground supplied through the ajar switches by circuit 57 (BK), indicating an open door. The DDM then signals the lighting control module (LCM) to supply power to the interior lamps.

Pinpoint Test G: The Battery Saver Does Not Deactivate After Timeout

During the battery saver function, the lighting control module (LCM) supplies circuit 705 (LG/OG) with voltage. The battery saver provides power to circuit 705 (LG/OG) for a predetermined time after the ignition switch has been cycled from the ON position to the OFF position. Once the predetermined timeout has elapsed, the LCM deactivates the battery saver and removes power from circuit 705 (LG/OG).

The luggage compartment lamps are controlled by the lighting control module (LCM). The LCM receives a signal from the luggage compartment lid ajar switch through the trunk pull-down module. When the luggage compartment lid is opened, the luggage compartment lid ajar switch closes and signals the trunk pull-down module through circuit 486 (BN/WH). The trunk pull-down module signals the LCM through circuit 700 (WH/VT) to request luggage lamp operation. The luggage lamps are supplied voltage through circuit 705 (LG/OG). The LCM controls the ground side of the luggage compartment lamps through circuit 707 (WH/YE).

REPEAT the self-test. NO : Go to J3 .
- J3 CHECK CIRCUIT 486 (BN/WH) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect: Trunk Pull-Down Module C4197 (power striker only) or C4081a (power decklid) For vehicles equipped with a power striker, measure the resistance between the trunk pull-down module C4197-3, circuit 486 (BN/WH), harness side and ground. For vehicles equipped with a power decklid, measure the resistance between the trunk pull-down module C4081a-4, circuit 486 (BN/WH), harness side and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? YES : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. NO : Go to J6 .
- J4 CHECK CIRCUIT 700 (WH/VT) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect: LCM C2145b Measure the resistance between the LCM C2145b-4, circuit 700 (WH/VT), harness side and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? YES : REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. NO : Go to J5 .
- J5 CHECK CIRCUIT 707 (WH/YE) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect: Luggage Compartment Lamps C428 and C4198 Measure the resistance between the LCM C2145d-9, circuit 707 (WH/YE), harness side and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? YES : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation. NO : Go to J7 .
- J6 CHECK FOR CORRECT TRUNK PULL-DOWN MODULE OPERATION Disconnect all the trunk pull-down module connectors. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect all the trunk pull-down module connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? YES : INSTALL a new trunk pull-down module. REFER to «BODY CLOSURES»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/exterior-body-panels/#body-panel-system-body-closures) article. TEST the system for normal operation. NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
- J7 CHECK FOR CORRECT LCM OPERATION Disconnect all the LCM connectors. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect all the LCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? YES : INSTALL a new LCM. REFER to «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/communication-devices/#multifunction-electronic-modules-system) article. TEST the system for normal operation. NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
The illuminated entry provides interior lighting whenever the lighting control module (LCM) receives a lamps on/doors unlock request from the remote keyless entry (RKE) transmitter. The LCM provides the voltage circuits for the interior lamps.

PINPOINT TEST K: THE ILLUMINATED ENTRY IS INOPERATIVE WHEN USING THE REMOTE TRANSMITTER
- K1 CHECK FOR CORRECT RKE OPERATION Using the RKE transmitter, lock and unlock the doors. Do the doors lock and unlock? YES : Go to K2 . NO : REFER to «HANDLES, LOCKS, LATCHES AND ENTRY SYSTEMS»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#handles-locks-latches-and-entry-systems) article to continue diagnosis of the RKE system.
- K2 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE INTERIOR LAMPS Open the driver door. Do the interior lamps illuminate? YES : Go to K3 . NO : Go to «Pinpoint Test A»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/interiorillumination-lights/#interior-lighting-system__pinpoint-test-a-the-interior-lamps) .
- K3 CHECK FOR CORRECT LCM OPERATION Disconnect all the LCM connectors. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect all the LCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? YES : INSTALL a new LCM. REFER to «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/communication-devices/#multifunction-electronic-modules-system) article. TEST the system for normal operation. NO : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
