TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

This vehicle uses a coil-on-plug electronic ignition system. The coil-on-plug ignition system consists of the following components

  1. Powertrain control module (PCM)
  2. Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor
  3. Ignition coil-on-plug
  4. Spark plugs

The PCM and the CKP sensor are also part of the electronic engine controls system. Refer to ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS article.

Eight separate ignition coils

  1. are controlled by the PCM for the correct firing sequence.
  2. are mounted directly above each spark plug.

The spark plugs

  1. change the high voltage pulse into a spark which ignites the fuel and air mixture.
  2. originally equipped on the vehicle have a nickel alloy electrode for long life.

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/body-electrical/#battery-mounting-and-cables) article.
  2. Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/removal-installation/#intake-air-distribution-system-and-filtering-system) article.
  3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition coil-on-plug.
  4. Remove the bolt from the ignition coil-on-plug. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  5. Remove the ignition coil-on-plug.
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

  2. Remove the spark plugs. To install, tighten to 15 Nm (11 lb-ft).
  3. Inspect the spark plugs. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/mechanical/#engine-system-general-information) article.
  4. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Adjust the spark plug gap as required.
