Fuel Charging and Controls

The fuel rail

  1. delivers fuel to the fuel injector.
  2. receives fuel from the fuel supply tube.
CAUTIONDo not hold the throttle plate open with any object that could scratch the bore or plate while servicing or cleaning the throttle body. Refer to THROTTLE BODY .

The throttle body

  1. controls air supply to the upper intake manifold by positioning the throttle plate.
  2. is coolant heated.
  3. is not adjustable.
  4. must be removed from the vehicle to be cleaned.

The fuel injector

  1. is electrically operated by the powertrain control module (PCM).
  2. has an internal solenoid that opens a needle valve to inject fuel into the lower intake manifold.
  3. atomizes the fuel as the fuel is delivered.
  4. is deposit resistant.

The fuel injection pressure and temperature sensor

  1. measures the pressure and temperature of the fuel in the fuel supply manifold and sends these signals to the PCM.
  2. uses intake manifold vacuum as a pressure reference.

REMOVAL

WARNINGDo not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel-related components. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and may be ignited. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury.
CAUTIONThe throttle body must be removed from the vehicle to be cleaned. Do not hold the throttle plate open with any object that could scratch the bore or plate while servicing or cleaning the throttle body.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/body-electrical/#battery-mounting-and-cables) article.
  2. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/removal-installation/#intake-air-distribution-system-and-filtering-system) article.
  3. Disconnect the throttle actuator control (TAC) and the throttle position (TP) sensor electrical connectors.
  4. Remove the 4 throttle body (TB) bolts and the TB. Discard the TB gasket.

INSTALLATION

  1. Install the TB and the 4 bolts. Tighten the bolts in 2 stages. Stage 1: Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in). Stage 2: Rotate an additional 90 degrees.
  2. Connect the TAC and the TP sensor electrical connectors.
  3. Install the air cleaner outlet tube. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/removal-installation/#intake-air-distribution-system-and-filtering-system) article.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/body-electrical/#battery-mounting-and-cables) article.

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

  1. Disconnect the battery ground. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/body-electrical/#battery-mounting-and-cables) article.
  2. Remove the throttle body (TB). For additional information, refer to «THROTTLE BODY»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/fuel-system/#fuel-system-and-engine-control-system) .
  3. Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose.
  4. Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge valve tube quick connect coupling. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/fuel-system/#fuel-system-general-information) article.
  5. Disconnect the intake manifold-to-throttle body spacer vacuum hose.
  6. Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) tube quick connect coupling. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/fuel-system/#fuel-system-general-information) article.
  7. Remove the 5 TB spacer bolts. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  8. Remove the TB spacer and gasket. Discard the TB spacer gasket.
  9. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Install a new gasket on the throttle body spacer.

Fuel Rail

MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS

WARNINGDo not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel-related components. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and may be ignited. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury.
WARNINGFuel in the fuel system remains under high pressure even when the engine is not running. Before servicing or disconnecting any of the fuel system components, the fuel system pressure must be relieved to prevent accidental spraying of fuel, causing personal injury or a fire hazard.
  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/hoistjack/#jacking-and-lifting) article.
  2. Release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/fuel-system/#fuel-system-general-information) article.
  3. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/body-electrical/#battery-mounting-and-cables) article.
  4. Disconnect the fuel tube spring lock coupling from the fuel rail. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/fuel-system/#fuel-system-general-information) article.
  5. Remove the throttle body (TB). For additional information, refer to «THROTTLE BODY»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/fuel-system/#fuel-system-and-engine-control-system) .
  6. Remove the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system module to exhaust manifold tube. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE EMISSION CONTROL»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/removal-installation/#engine-emission-control-system) article.
  7. Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose from the throttle body spacer and position aside.
  8. Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge valve hose quick connect coupling from the throttle body spacer and position aside. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/fuel-system/#fuel-system-general-information) article.
  9. Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) tube quick connect coupling from the throttle body spacer and position aside. For additional information, refer to «FUEL SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/fuel-system/#fuel-system-general-information) article.
  10. Disconnect the intake manifold vacuum hose from the throttle body spacer and position aside.
  11. If equipped, detach the crash bracket wire harness retainer.
  12. Remove the crash bracket bolts and bracket. To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  13. Remove the wire harness retainer from the LH front fuel rail stud bolt and position aside.
  14. Disconnect the 8 fuel injector electrical connectors.
  15. Disconnect the ground connector from the RH rear fuel rail stud bolt and position aside.
  16. Disconnect the fuel rail pressure and temperature sensor vacuum and electrical connectors.
  17. Disconnect the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system module vacuum and electrical connectors.
  18. Remove the 2 intake manifold shield bolts and the shield. To install, tighten to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft).
  19. Remove the 4 fuel rail stud bolts. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
  20. Remove the fuel rail and the fuel injectors as an assembly.
  21. Separate the fuel injectors from the fuel rail. Discard the O-ring seals.
  22. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Lubricate the fuel injectors O-ring seals with clean engine oil prior to installation.
