TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

The frame is bolted to the body and is used to

  1. aid in structural support.
  2. provide mounting surfaces for the rear of the front suspension control arms.
  3. support the radiator.
  4. provide a mounting point for the front stabilizer bar.
  5. provide a mounting point for the number 2 and number 3 crossmembers.

The front number 2 crossmember is bolted to the frame and is used to

  1. aid in structural support.
  2. provide mounting surfaces for the front suspension control arms.
  3. provide a mounting point for the engine mounts.

The number 3 crossmember is bolted to the frame and is used to

  1. aid in structural support.
  2. provide mounting surfaces for the rear transmission support insulator.

For the removal and installation of the number 3 crossmember, refer to AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION article.

Drilling Precautions

  1. If a hole must be drilled in the frame, make sure the hole meets the following requirements: The hole is at least the specified distance from the edge of the nearest hole. The edge of the drilled hole is at least the specified distance from the edge of the flange. The hole is at least the specified distance above the frame centerline. The drilled hole is at least the specified distance from any other existing bracket or component of the frame.

Welding Precautions

  1. If welding must be done on a frame, make sure the following requirements are met: If the frame is attached to the vehicle, the battery ground cable must be disconnected before using any electrical welding equipment. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/body-electrical/#battery-mounting-and-cables) article. Do not use gas welding equipment; arc welding is the only approved method. Use a temperature-indicating crayon to make sure that the temperature does not exceed 750°C (1,382°F). No welding should be done between the number 2 crossmember (aluminum) and the center sidemember.

Body Misalignment Check

  1. To check the body alignment, take 2 opposite diagonal measurements between the front, center or rear pillars. Take the measurements between reference points, such as crease lines or weld joints which are diagonally opposite each other on the 2 pillars being measured.

Underbody Misalignment Check

  1. The dimensions of the underbody must be restored to provide the correct front and rear wheel alignment geometry.
  2. All the dimensions are measured between the centers of the existing holes in the underbody unless otherwise specified.
  3. Inspect all underbody structural members for cracks, twists or bends. Check all welded connections for cracks. Inspect the support brackets for looseness. Carry out any necessary repairs or install new components as necessary.
  4. Underbody dimension tolerances are ± 3 mm (0.12 in). Frame Straightening

  1. When straightening the frame, make sure the following requirements are met: CAUTION: Reposition and/or shield any fuel lines, brake lines, or wiring harness or component in the heated area. If heat is needed to straighten a frame member, keep the temperature below 650° C (1,202° F) (a dull red glow). A temperature sensitive thermal melt crayon should be used to monitor heat buildup. Heat should be kept to a minimum area so that the hardness of the metal is not affected. Straightening should only be attempted on frames that fail to meet specifications of the diagonal checking method or where damage is apparent. Straightening should be limited to parts which are not severely bent. Reposition and/or shield any fuel lines, brake lines, or wiring harnesses or components in heated area.

Frame Reinforcement

Note. The frame must be straightened before any reinforcing can be started.

  1. After a bent frame member is straightened, inspect the frame member closely for cracks. If any cracks show, the frame member should be reinforced or replaced. Reinforcements should be made from angle or flat stock of the same material and thickness as the frame member being reinforced, and should extend to either side of the crack. Ideally, the reinforcement should be cut from the corresponding area of a similar frame.

REMOVAL

CAUTIONSuspension fasteners are critical parts because they affect the performance of vital components and systems and their failure can result in major repair expense. A new part with the same part number must be installed if installation is necessary. Do not use a new part of lesser quality or substitute design. Torque values must be used as specified during reassembly to make sure of correct retention of these parts.
  1. Remove the generator. For additional information, refer to «GENERATOR AND REGULATOR»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/charging-system/#charging-system-generator-regulator) article.
  2. Remove the 4 pin-type retainers and the radiator sight shield.
  3. Install the engine support bar.
  4. Disconnect the RH anti-lock brake system (ABS) electrical connectors.
  5. Disconnect the LH ABS electrical connectors.
  6. Remove the LH and RH front wheel and tire assemblies. For additional information, refer to «WHEELS AND TIRES»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/wheel-tire-system/#wheels-and-tires) article.
  7. Remove the bolt and detach the intermediate shaft from the steering gear.
  8. Remove the 2 nuts and the 2 bolts from the LH number 2 crossmember bracket and the 2 nuts and the 2 bolts from the RH number 2 crossmember bracket. Separate the number 2 crossmember brackets from the crossmember.
  9. Raise and support the vehicle.
  10. Remove the 2 engine mount nuts.
  11. Remove the 2 nuts and disconnect the LH and RH stabilizer bar links.
  12. Remove the 2 nuts and disconnect the LH and RH outer tie-rods ends.
  13. Remove the 2 bolts and position the LH and RH brake hose and brackets assemblies aside.
  14. Remove the 4 bolts and position the LH and RH brake calipers aside. Support the brake calipers away from the number 2 crossmember.
  15. Position the front LH and RH ABS harness aside. Release the 2 ABS harnesses from the support bracket. Remove the 2 bolts and the brackets. Remove the 2 harness retainers from the frame.
  16. Remove the 2 steering gear nuts.
  17. Remove the 2 studs and position the steering gear aside. Support the steering gear away from the number 2 crossmember.
  18. Release the brake line from the retaining clips at the rear of the number 2 crossmember.
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20. Using the engine support bar, raise the engine to remove the engine weight from the number 2 crossmember.
  21. Raise and support the vehicle.
  22. Remove the 3 LH lower control arm and 3 RH lower control arm rear mounting bolts.
  23. Position a suitable support table under the number 2 crossmember.
  24. Remove the 4 number 2 crossmember bolts.
  25. Lower and remove the number 2 crossmember assembly.

INSTALLATION

  1. Raise and position the number 2 crossmember assembly.
  2. Install the 4 number 2 crossmember bolts. Tighten to 250 Nm (184 lb-ft).
  3. Position the LH and RH number 2 crossmember brackets.
  4. Remove the support table.
  5. Install the LH and RH number 2 crossmember bracket nuts and bolts. Tighten the rear bolt. Tighten to 103 Nm (76 lb-ft). Tighten the front bolt. Tighten to 103 Nm (76 lb-ft). Tighten the nuts. Tighten to 200 Nm (148 lb-ft).
  6. Install the 3 LH lower control arm and 3 RH lower control arm rear mounting bolts. Tighten to 90 Nm (66 lb-ft).
  7. Position the brake line into the retaining clips at the rear of the number 2 crossmember.
  8. Install the LH and RH ABS harness. Install the 2 harness retainers into the frame. Install the 2 brackets and bolts. Install the 2 ABS harnesses into the support brackets.
  9. Position the LH and RH brake calipers and install the 4 bolts. Tighten to 32 Nm (24 lb-ft).
  10. Position the LH and RH brake hose and brackets and install the 2 bolts.
  11. Position the steering gear and install the 2 steering gear studs. Tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
  12. Install the 2 steering gear nuts. Tighten to 103 Nm (76 lb-ft).
  13. Position the LH and RH stabilizer bar links and install the 2 nuts. Install new nuts. Tighten to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft).
  14. Position the LH and RH tie-rod ends and install the 2 nuts. Install new nuts. Tighten to 80 Nm (59 lb-ft).
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16. Connect the intermediate shaft to the steering gear and install the bolt. Tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).
  17. Remove the engine support bar.
  18. Install the LH and RH front wheel and tire assemblies. For additional information, refer to «WHEELS AND TIRES»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/wheel-tire-system/#wheels-and-tires) article.
  19. Connect the RH ABS electrical connectors.
  20. Connect the LH ABS electrical connectors.
  21. Install the generator. For additional information, refer to «GENERATOR AND REGULATOR»(/lincoln/town-car/iii-2003-2011/remont/charging-system/#charging-system-generator-regulator) article.
  22. Position the radiator sight shield and install the 4 pin-type retainers.
  23. Raise and support the vehicle.
  24. Install the 2 engine mount nuts. Tighten to 90 Nm (66 lb-ft).
