Inspection and Verification
| WARNING | Always disconnect the battery ground cable at the battery before disconnecting the starter motor battery terminal lead. If a tool is shorted at the starter motor battery terminal, the tool can quickly heat enough to cause a skin burn. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury. |
Note. The anti-theft system must be functioning correctly before a logical starting system diagnosis can be carried out. Address anti-theft system concerns before continuing. Refer to ANTI-THEFT .
- Verify the customer concern by operating the starting system to duplicate the conditions.
- Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to «REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-355935-S41138162192010013000000) for 2.5L engines, «REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-355936-S42462503032010013000000) for 3.0L (4V) or «REMOVAL»(ref-355937-S42663157132010013000000) for 3.5L engines. Verify the crankshaft and each of the components driven by the accessory drive belt rotate and are not seized or damaged.
- Inspect to determine if any of the following mechanical or electrical concerns apply. VISUAL INSPECTION TABLE Mechanical Electrical Starter motor Starter motor bolts Flexplate Flywheel Battery Battery Junction Box (BJB) fuse 5 (30A) Smart Junction Box (SJB) fuse 27 (20A) Wiring harness Starter motor relay Anti-theft system Loose or corroded connections
- If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
- If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the Data Link Connector (DLC). NOTE: Make sure to use the latest scan tool software release.
- If the scan tool does not communicate with the VCM : check the VCM connection to the vehicle. check the scan tool connection to the VCM . refer to «PINPOINT TEST AF: NO POWER TO THE SCAN TOOL»(ref-355946-S03084164432010013000000) to diagnose no power to the scan tool. NOTE: The Vehicle Communication Module (VCM) LED prove out confirms power and ground from the DLC are provided to the VCM .
- If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle: verify the ignition key is in the ON position. verify the scan tool operation with a known good vehicle. refer to «PINPOINT TEST A: THE PCM DOES NOT RESPOND TO THE SCAN TOOL»(ref-355946-S02817008552010013000000) to diagnose no response from the PCM.
- Carry out the network test. If the scan tool responds with no communication for one or more modules, refer to «INSPECTION AND VERIFICATION»(ref-355946-S34749853742010013000000) . If the network test passes, retrieve and record Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Codes (CMDTCs).
- Clear the continuous DTCs and carry out the self-test diagnostics for the PCM.
- If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, refer to «PCM DTC TABLE»(ref-355983-S06809462132010013000000) . For all other DTCs, refer to «DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING»(ref-355947-S02295258342010013000000) .
- If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, go to «SYMPTOM TABLE»(ref-355983-S11044105592010013000000) .

Pinpoint Test C: Unusual Starter Noise
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following
- Starter motor mounting
- Starter motor mounting bolts
- Starter motor drive
- Flywheel or flexplate ring gear
- Starter motor
- C1 CHECK THE STARTER MOUNTING Inspect the starter motor mounting bolts for looseness. Is the starter motor mounted correctly? Yes: GO to C2 . No: INSTALL the starter motor correctly. REFER to «Removal and Installation»(ref-355983-S38471229502010013000000) (2.5L), «Removal and Installation»(ref-355983-S03348766152010050500000) (3.0L) or «Removal and Installation»(ref-355983-S37238001662010050500000) (3.5L). TEST the system for normal operation.
- C2 CHECK FOR ENGINE NOISE Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. Connect a fused jumper wire from the B-terminal to the S-terminal of the starter motor. Engage the starter motor and verify that the noise is due to the starter operation. Is the noise due to the starter motor engagement? Yes: GO to C3 . No: REFER to «DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING»(ref-355929-S14253752062010013000000) to continue the diagnosis.
- C3 CHECK FOR UNUSUAL WEAR Remove the starter motor. Refer to «Removal and Installation»(ref-355983-S38471229502010013000000) (2.5L), «Removal and Installation»(ref-355983-S03348766152010050500000) (3.0L) or «Removal and Installation»(ref-355983-S37238001662010050500000) (3.5L). Inspect the ring gear for damaged or worn teeth. Is the noise due to flexplate/flywheel ring gear tooth damage? Yes: INSTALL a new flexplate/flywheel ring gear. EXAMINE the starter pinion teeth. If damaged, INSTALL a new starter motor. REFER to «Removal and Installation»(ref-355983-S38471229502010013000000) (2.5L), «Removal and Installation»(ref-355983-S03348766152010050500000) (3.0L) or «Removal and Installation»(ref-355983-S37238001662010050500000) (3.5L). TEST the system for normal operation. No: INSTALL a new starter motor.
