Scheme 1

The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a 17-digit combination of letters and numbers. The VIN is stamped on a metal tab riveted on the instrument panel, top upper left of the dash. The VIN is also found on the Vehicle Certification (VC) label.

If the VIN plate requires replacement, authorized dealers must contact their respective regional office.

The first 3 VIN positions are the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI).

1. 3FA - Ford, Mexico, passenger car
2. 3ME - Mercury, Mexico, passenger car
3. 3LN - Lincoln, Mexico, passenger car

Scheme 4

The fourth VIN position identifies the vehicle restraint system used.

1. D - Active safety belts, all positions with driver, front passenger air bags and driver side knee bolster
2. H - Active safety belts, all positions, driver and front passenger air bags and driver and front passenger side impact air bags

Scheme 5

VIN positions 5 through 7 indicate the vehicle line and series type.

1. L2G - Lincoln, Front Wheel Drive (FWD)
2. L2J - Lincoln, All-Wheel Drive (AWD)
3. M26 - Lincoln, FWD , TT unit only
4. M28 - Lincoln, AWD , TT unit only

The eighth VIN position is the engine type (displacement and number of cylinders).

1. 3 - ATK-CVC, 2.5L, 4-valve Gas/Electric (Hybrid)
2. A - 2.5L, Dual Overhead Camshaft (DOHC), 4-cylinder, Duratec
3. C - 3.5L, DOHC , V6
4. G - 3.0L, Overhead Camshaft (OHC), V6, Duratec

Scheme 7

The ninth VIN position is a government-assigned, computer-generated check digit.
