Steering Column: Removal & Installation Lincoln MKX I

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

  1. Position the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position and turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. Remove the key.
  2. Remove the driver air bag module. For additional information, refer to «SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM»(ref-292554) article.
  3. Remove the steering wheel nut. To install, tighten to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft).
  4. Disconnect the steering wheel switches electrical connector.
  5. Using a suitable puller, remove the steering wheel.
  6. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Align the steering wheel using the reference mark.

  1. Turn the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position and turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. Remove the key.
  2. Depower the supplemental restraint system (SRS). For additional information, refer to «SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM»(ref-292554) article.
  3. Remove the upper steering column shroud.
  4. Release the tilt lever, remove the 3 lower steering column shroud screws and the shroud.
  5. Remove the 2 steering column opening cover screws. Detach the steering column opening cover.
  6. If equipped, disconnect the electrical connector and hose from the in-vehicle temperature sensor. Remove the steering column opening cover.
  7. Disconnect the multi-function switch, ignition switch and clockspring electrical connectors.
  8. Disconnect the steering angle sensor electrical connector.
  9. Disconnect the passive anti-theft system (PATS) electrical connector.
  10. Detach the wiring harness retainer and position the wiring harness aside.
  11. Remove the lower steering column shaft joint cover nuts and the cover.
  12. Index-mark the steering column shaft position to the steering gear for reference during installation.
  13. Remove the steering column shaft bolt and disconnect the shaft from the steering gear. To install, tighten to 23 Nm (17 lb-ft).
  14. Remove the 4 steering column support bracket nuts and the steering column. To install, tighten to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft).
  15. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  16. Repower the SRS. For additional information, refer to «SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM»(ref-292554) article.
