Principles of Operation
The DSM is on the controller area network (CAN) communication network to support the memory driver seat. If a memory driver seat is not equipped on the vehicle, the vehicle will not be equipped with a DSM. If the vehicle is equipped with a DSM, it will use the CAN communication network to permit inter-module and scan tool communications. The vehicle may have both memory driver seat and memory exterior mirrors, or only memory driver seat, or neither memory driver seat or memory exterior mirrors.
The DSM controls the memory driver seat and the memory exterior mirrors. The memory feature allows the driver to program personalized seat/mirror positions. Once the driver stores a memory position, the setting can be recalled by pressing the corresponding memory switch or by using a programmed remote keyless entry (RKE) integrated keyhead transmitter (IKT). Refer to SEATING article.
Note. The smart junction box (SJB) is also known as the generic electronic module (GEM).
Note. The time out for the battery saver relay and the accessory delay relay is 1 minute if the vehicle has less than 80 km (50 miles). Both are controlled by the SJB. Once the vehicle passes the approximate mileage threshold of 80 km (50 miles), the time out for both relays will be the normal 10 minute time out, as described by the Owner's Literature. Refer to INTERIOR LIGHTING article for additional information on the battery saver relay. Refer to GLASS, FRAMES & MECHANISMS article for additional information on the accessory delay relay.
The SJB communicates via the medium speed controller area network (MS-CAN).
The SJB controls the power door lock system. The module monitors the door lock/unlock switch inputs from the interior door lock switches. When the module receives an unlock/lock command from any door lock control switch, the module activates the door lock actuators. Refer to HANDLES, LOCKS, LATCHES & ENTRY SYSTEMS article.
The module also controls the following remote lock/unlock features
- Remote keyless entry (RKE) transmitter lock/unlock (buttons are part of the integrated keyhead transmitter [IKT] key)
- Panic alarm (button is part of the IKT key)
- Keyless entry keypad
The SJB controls the autolamp subsystem. The autolamp subsystem provides light-sensitive automatic on/off control of the headlamps and parking lamps. Refer to EXTERIOR LIGHTING article.
