4-Wheel Anti-Lock Brake/Traction Control (ABS/TC) Control Module Or Stability Assist Module (if equipped)

The anti-lock brake system/traction (ABS/TC) control module or stability assist module (if equipped) are on the standard corporate protocol (SCP) communication network. The ABS/TC control module or stability assist module controls the brake pressure to the four wheels to keep the vehicle under control while braking. For additional information, refer to ANTI-LOCK CONTROL .

Front Electronic Module (FEM)/Rear Electronic Module (REM)

The front electronic module (FEM) and rear electronic module (REM) are connected to the SCP communication network. The FEM and the REM control both interior and exterior lighting and active anti-theft functions. For additional information on interior lamps, refer to INTERIOR LIGHTING - LS . Restraint Control Module (RCM)

The restraint control module (RCM) is on the international standards organization (ISO) 9141 network. The RCM controls the deployment of the air bags based on sensor input. For additional information, refer to AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS .

Instrument Cluster

The instrument cluster is on the SCP communication network. It is an analog face cluster with a digital odometer. The instrument cluster displays a variety of information. For additional information, refer to INFORMATION, GAUGES & WARNING DEVICES .

Powertrain Control Module (PCM)

The powertrain control module (PCM) is on the controller area network (CAN) communication network and the SCP network. The PCM uses the CAN network to communicate with the diagnostic tool and utilizes the SCP network to communicate with other modules. The PCM controls the engine for better fuel economy, emissions control, failure mode detection and storage. Refer to INTRODUCTION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE for diagnosis and testing of the PCM.

Dual Automatic Temperature Control (DATC) Module

The dual automatic temperature control (DATC) module is on the SCP communication network and the universal asynchronous transmitter-receiver (UART)-based protocol (UBP) communications network. The DATC module uses the SCP network to communicate with the diagnostic tool and other modules. The UBP network is used by the DATC module for communication with the driver climate control seat module. The DATC module controls automatic climate functions that maintain the vehicle interior temperature at a constant setting. For additional information, refer to CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM .

Audio Control Module (ACM)

The audio control module (ACM) is connected to the SCP communication network and also to the audio control protocol (ACP) communication network. The ACM communicates with the compact disc player/changer using the ACP. The ACM uses the SCP network for diagnostics. Navigation System Module

The navigation system module is on the SCP communication network. The navigation system module communicates with the audio unit using a dedicated CAN network. The vehicle navigation system provides a feature that will guide the user to any entered destination. The system uses the global positioning sensor (GPS), vehicle speed, and other sensor information to accurately establish the vehicle position. The navigation system module compares this position to the DVD vector map. The system then provides the maneuvers required during the journey in order to arrive at the destination entered. Driver Seat Module (DSM)

The driver seat module (DSM) is on the SCP communication network. The DSM controls the positioning and programming of the driver seat. For additional information, refer to SEATING .

Driver Climate Control Seat Module

The driver climate control seat module is on the universal asynchronous transmitter-receiver (UART)-based protocol UBP communications network. The driver climate control seat module and DATC module control the heating and cooling elements in the seat for passenger comfort. Passenger Climate Control Seat Module

The passenger climate control seat module is on the UBP communications network. The passenger climate control seat module and DATC module control the heating and cooling elements in the seat for passenger comfort. For additional passenger climate control seat module information, refer to SEATING .

Parking Aid Module

The parking aid module is connected to the UBP communications network. The module controls sensors in the rear bumper that detect close objects when the transmission is in REVERSE. For additional information, refer to INFORMATION, GAUGES & WARNING DEVICES .

Electric Parking Brake Module

The electric parking brake module is connected to the SCP communication network. The module controls the solenoid which applies and releases the parking brake. or additional electric parking brake module information, refer to BRAKE SYSTEM .

Driver Door Module (DDM)

The driver door module (DDM) is connected to the SCP communication network. The DDM accepts the user memory set and recall buttons. The DDM then sends the memory set and recall commands to the other modules over the SCP bus. The DDM also controls the driver mirror (memory positions are stored there and manual functions are controlled there). The DSM controls the driver seat. The FEM control the passenger mirror and adjustable pedals positions. The instrument cluster controls the steering column positions. Definition of Terms

Calibration Update: Some modules are designed to be flashed or reflashed with complete new software packages. This process of reflashing the module is a calibration update.

Programmable Parameters: These are options contained within the existing software. These include items such as tire size, customer preference items and anti-theft options. The current settings are required to be downloaded from an existing module, then uploaded to a new module. Customer preference items can be configured using a diagnostic tool. Programming parameters is very different from updating calibrations as no software is changed only the options already contained in the software.

Programmable Parameters

If a module that has been modified using programmable parameters needs to be installed, the PMI procedure will maintain the parameters in their altered state if the WDS is able to communicate with the old module during Vehicle ID. Otherwise you may need to use programmable parameters to return them to the altered state.

Module Controlled Functions

The multifunction modules consist of the following

  1. front electronic module (FEM)

Front Electronic Module (FEM), Rear Electronic Module (REM)

The front electronic module (FEM) and rear electronic module (REM) control adjustable pedals, RH exterior mirror, interior and exterior lighting and active anti-theft functions. For additional information on interior lamps, refer to INTERIOR LIGHTING - LS . For additional information on exterior lighting, refer to EXTERIOR LIGHTING - LS . For additional information on active anti-theft, refer to ANTI-THEFT . For additional information on exterior mirrors, refer to EXTERIOR TRIM .

The driver door module controls many functions including the keyless entry keypad, power locks, and remote keyless entry. The DDM also communicates with the driver seat module (DSM) to control power seat memory. For additional information, refer to HANDLES, LOCKS, LATCHES AND ENTRY SYSTEMS . The DSM allows automatic positioning of the memory driver seat two programmable positions. For additional information, refer to SEATING .

Step A

  1. SELECT: Restore Configuration - New ECU then press trigger.
  2. The NGS will complete loading the retrieved data and display: Module Download Successful.
  3. Test the module for correct operation.

Step B

  1. Press trigger.
  2. If the NGS asks for vehicle data - enter the vehicle data then press store.
  3. The NGS will ask for module data line 1 - enter data and press store.
  4. The NGS will then ask if there is an additional line of data available for that address - Select YES or NO depending on the information in the As Built Data Sheet.
  5. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 until the answer is NO for Step 4 .
  6. The NGS should show a screen stating that module data was stored - press trigger.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  8. SELECT: Restore Configuration - New ECU then press trigger.
  9. The NGS will complete loading the entered data.

Using The New Generation STAR (NGS) Tester When The Original Body Chassis Electrical Module Is Available

  1. With the original module still installed, using the NGS tester and the latest version service function card, SELECT: Programmable Module Installation.
  2. Select: the module being installed and press trigger.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. SELECT: Retrieve Module Configuration - Old ECU and press trigger.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  6. INSTALL new module, SELECT: Restore Configuration - New ECU then press trigger.
  7. The NGS will complete loading the retrieved data.

Using The Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) When The Original Body Chassis Electrical Module Is Not Available

  1. Install the new module.
  2. Connect the WDS and ID the vehicle as normal.
  3. From the Toolbox icon, select and highlight: Module Programming and then highlight the module that was installed and press the check mark.
  4. Select and highlight: Programmable Module Installation and then highlight the module that was installed then press the check mark.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions and turn the ignition key to the OFF position and press the check mark.
  6. The WDS will retrieve the module data from the PCM and automatically download the data into the new module and display Module Configuration Complete.
  7. If the data is not available in the PCM, the WDS will display a screen stating to contact the As-Built Data Center.
  8. Enter the module data.
  9. WDS will download the data into the new module and display.

Using The Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) When The Original Body Chassis Electrical Module Is Available

  1. Connect the WDS and ID the vehicle as normal.
  2. From the Toolbox icon, select and highlight: Module Programming and press the check mark.
  3. Select and highlight: Programmable Module Installation.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  5. Install the new module.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  7. Module configuration is complete.

  2. Remove the LH scuff plate.
  3. Remove the LH A-pillar lower trim panel.
  4. Position the carpet aside.
  5. Position aside the components in the order indicated in the following illustration and table.
  6. Remove the components in the order indicated in the following illustration and table.
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
