REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTIONWhen repair procedure requires vehicle to be raised on a hoist, air suspension should be turned off. Suspension switch is located in left side of trunk. DO NOT turn air suspension on until repair is complete, vehicle is lowered and vehicle weight exists on all wheels.
CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.

Turn off air suspension switch located in left side of trunk. Raise vehicle on hoist. Disconnect actuator solenoid valve electrical connector. Remove power steering hose bracket bolt and bracket. Disconnect and plug power steering hoses and steering gear openings. Remove actuator solenoid valve. To install solenoid valve, reverse removal procedure. Install NEW "O" ring on solenoid valve. Install 2 NEW "O" rings onto power steering pressure and return hose fittings using Teflon Seal Replacer (211-D027). Tighten fasteners to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Fill and check power steering system for leaks.

Removal

  1. Remove 4 push pins and engine cover. Remove air cleaner and air cleaner outlet tube. On 3.9L engine, remove radiator hose bolts. On all engines, remove accessory drive belt. Using Pulley Remover (211-016), remove pulley. Unclamp and disconnect power steering reservoir-to-pump hose and drain reservoir into a suitable container.
  2. On 3.9L engine, loosen reservoir bolts, rotate reservoir from insulator and pull reservoir down from insulator, and position aside. Turn off electronic suspension. Switch is located in left side of trunk. On all engines, raise vehicle on a hoist and remove wheel. Remove bolts, push pins and then shields. Remove power steering hose bracket bolt.
  3. Disconnect electrical connector and wire retainer. Remove 4 bolts, and position A/C compressor aside. Disconnect power steering hose. Remove pump upper bolts. Lower vehicle. Remove pump lower bolts and pump.

Installation

Note. DO NOT tighten upper pump bolts until lower pump bolts are installed.

Using Teflon Seal Replacer Set (211-D027), install a NEW "O" ring onto power steering pressure hose fitting. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Fill and check power steering system for leaks.

  1. Hold steering wheel in straight-ahead position. DO NOT allow steering wheel to turn during steering gear removal. Turn off air suspension switch located in left side of trunk. Raise and support vehicle. Remove tire and wheel assemblies. Remove 8 bolts and 2 "I" braces (if equipped), noting position of "I" brace insulators (if equipped) for installation reference. Remove tie rod end ball joint nuts, and discard nuts. Disconnect tie rod ends from steering knuckle. CAUTION: DO NOT rotate steering wheel when lower intermediate shaft is disconnected. Damage to air bag sliding contact will result. If steering wheel rotation is suspected, sliding contact (coilspring) must be removed and re-centered. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  2. Disconnect actuator solenoid valve electrical connector. Loosen intermediate shaft bolt. Remove intermediate shaft pinch bolt and disconnect intermediate shaft from steering gear. Remove power steering hose bracket bolt and bracket.
  3. Disconnect power steering hoses and plug openings in power steering hoses and steering gear. Remove 3 power steering gear mounting nuts. Discard nuts. Remove steering gear from vehicle.
  1. Install 2 NEW "O" rings onto power steering pressure and return hose fittings using Teflon Seal Replacer (211-D027). Position steering gear in place and install gear mounting bolts and NEW nuts.
  2. When installing "I" braces (if equipped), loosely install front bolts. Position "I" brace. Loosely install rear bolts. Ensure "I" brace insulators (if equipped) are positioned as noted during removal. Install tie rod ends using NEW nuts. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-96949-S34540216842001041900000) .
CAUTIONElectronic modules are sensitive to static electrical charges. If exposed to these charges, damage may result.

Note. Prior to removal of module, it is necessary to upload module configuration information to appropriate diagnostic equipment. This information needs to be downloaded into module once installed. See appropriate MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.

Remove left scuff plate. Release retaining clips and remove left "A" pillar lower trim panel. Remove lower instrument panel finish panel. Remove courtesy light from instrument panel finish panel. Position driver-side carpet aside. Remove nuts, and position interior auxiliary junction box (AJB) aside. Remove nuts and bolts, and position FEM aside. Disconnect 6 electrical connectors from FEM. Remove FEM. To install, reverse removal procedure. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
