Driver Seat Module

The power driver seat, power outside rear view mirrors and power adjustable pedals are controlled by the driver seat module (DSM). The DSM tests the seat wiring and the power seat operation continuously. If an electrical or operational fault occurs, the DSM will store a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) in memory to assist the technician with diagnostics.

The DSM system consists of the following components

  1. Driver seat module (DSM)
  2. Driver memory seat switch
  3. Memory mirror switch
  4. Memory set switch
  5. Front vertical seat motor
  6. Rear vertical seat motor
  7. Driver horizontal memory mirror
  8. LH heated memory mirror
  9. RH heated memory mirror
  10. Power adjustable memory pedals
  11. Remote entry key fob

The DSM incorporates multiple functions into one module and offers diagnostics to easily locate and repair concerns affecting the subsystems it controls.

Easy Entry/Easy Exit

The easy entry/easy exit feature of the driver seat moves the seat two inches rearward when the ignition key is removed (if the seat starts out in the most rearward position the easy entry/easy exit feature will not operate).

The easy entry/easy exit feature of the driver seat moves the seat up to two inches forward when the key is installed (if the seat had moved two inches rearward when the key was removed).

Programming Seat Positions

  1. A position setting may be recalled if the vehicle is in PARK or NEUTRAL and the ignition switch is not in the START position. After the DSM has initiated the recall, starting the engine or shifting out of PARK or NEUTRAL will not interrupt the process. The driver must move the seat to the desired position using the driver seat switch assembly. The driver must then depress the memory SET switch which activates the memory SET switch light emitting diode (LED). Within five seconds (before the LED goes out), the driver must select a memory position. Memory 1 is selected by depressing memory switch 1. Memory 2 is selected by depressing memory switch 2. Memory 3 is selected by depressing both memory switch 1 and memory switch 2 simultaneously.
  2. If no memory switch input is received within the five second time limit, the operation is aborted and the memory SET switch LED is turned off. If one of the following inputs is received during the five second programming limit, the operation is aborted and the memory SET switch LED is turned off: Power driver seat switch Power outside rear view mirror switch Memory SET switch Power adjustable pedal switch

Recalling a Stored Seat Position

Note. A memory recall can be initiated only if the vehicle is in PARK or NEUTRAL gear and the ignition switch is not in START. A memory recall in progress will not be affected by moving the ignition switch to START or by moving the gearshift lever out of PARK or NEUTRAL.

Once the driver has stored the driver seat position, the driver can recall the setting by depressing the corresponding memory switch or by using a programmed remote entry transmitter.

  1. The driver can recall the desired driver seat position by depressing one or both of the memory recall switches. Depressing memory switch 1 will initiate a recall of the power driver seat position stored in memory 1. Depressing memory switch 2 will initiate a recall of the power driver seat position stored in memory 2. Depressing memory switch 1 and memory switch 2 simultaneously will initiate a recall of the power driver seat position stored in memory 3.
  2. A remote transmitter can be used to recall previously set memory positions. The transmitter that has been assigned with personality 1 is capable of recalling memory position 1 only. Similarly, the personality 2 and 3 transmitters can recall only memory positions 2 and 3, respectively.
  3. Memory recall occurs when the UNLOCK switch is depressed on the transmitter. The second depression of the UNLOCK switch, which unlocks passenger doors, does not initiate a memory recall.
  4. A memory recall in progress does not prohibit the initiation of another memory recall; the most recently requested memory recall will be executed.

Front Seats

The front seats are/can be equipped with the following systems

  1. Power seat tracks
  2. Memory driver seat
  3. Bucket design
  4. Center dividing console
  5. Standard power lumbar
  6. Standard six-way power adjuster
  7. Optional climate controlled seating With temperature controlled seating, there is an air filter located in the fan motor housing under the seat. See the owner literature for additional service and scheduled maintenance interval information. The front seat power seat motors and seat track are serviced as an assembly with the front seat cushion frame.

Rear Seats - Second Row

Two different types of second row seat configurations are available

40/20/40

The second row can have 40/20/40 seats

  1. Equipped with a 40 percent E-Z entry seat that provides easy access to the third row
  2. Folds down for more cargo area

40/Center Console/40

The second row can have 40/Center Console/40 seats

  1. Equipped with a 40 percent E-Z entry seat that provides easy access to the third row
  2. 40 percent seat folds down for more cargo area
  3. Center console with storage bin and beverage holder

Seats - Third Row

The third row seat

  1. Is a two-passenger seat.
  2. Will fold down for more cargo area.

Climate Controlled Seat System

The optional equipment package includes climate controlled seats for driver and front passenger. This option is present when upholstery in the front seats is perforated.

Both the driver and front passenger seat has an independent temperature controlled seat system installed. A temperature controlled seat module mounted to the bottom of the seat cushion electronically controls the temperature controlled seat system. The temperature controlled seat system receives power from both the battery power and vehicle run circuits. The vehicle must be running and the heat/cool switch must be pressed for the temperature controlled seat system to activate.

Cabin air is drawn through the seat fan motor and distributed to each of the thermal electric device (TED) modules located in the seat cushion and backrest. The TEDs then heat or cool the air. The air is then directed into the foam pad B-surface. Channels in the A-surface of the foam pad are used to distribute the air along the surface of the seat.

Once the system is activated, the temperature controlled seat module uses a set of flexible algorithms to control the heating/cooling modes and the fan motor speed, based on the temperature controlled seat switch settings. These algorithms are designed to protect the user from potentially harmful prolonged exposure to temperature extremes.

The TED uses a "Peltier" circuit of p-type and n-type semiconductors connected in series using copper electrical conductors. The semiconductors are sandwiched between two insulating ceramic plates. When current is applied to the TED, one side releases energy as heat, while the opposite side absorbs energy and gets cold. By reversing the current flow, the hot and cold sides reverse.

Heating Characteristics

  1. The temperature controlled seat system draws approximately 7.5 amps until reaching the set point, and then the system draws approximately 2 amps to maintain the temperature setting.
  2. In HEAT mode, the TED can add up to 40-60°C (72-108°F) to the ambient air temperature entering the system.
  3. There are two HEAT mode settings based on the position of the temperature controlled seat switch thumb wheel. Position one is the low setting and position five is the high setting.
  4. In the low setting, the temperature controlled seat module is set to maintain seat surface temperature at 37°C (99°F).
  5. In the high setting, the temperature controlled seat module is set to maintain seat surface temperature at 43°-45°C (109°-113°F).
  6. If the temperature at one of the TEDs goes above 70°C (158°F), the temperature controlled seat module will then go into an over-temperature mode and shut down the TEDs. The fan motor will continue to operate during over-temperature mode.
  7. In HEAT mode, there is no linear correlation between the thumb wheel position, seat fan motor speed, and TED supply voltage. The temperature controlled seat module will independently vary the fan speed TED supply voltage in order to reach and maintain the temperature determined by the thumb wheel.

Cooling Characteristics

  1. The temperature controlled seat system draws approximately seven amps until reaching the set point, and then the system draws approximately two amps to maintain the temperature setting.
  2. In COOL mode, the TED can remove up to 8-10°C (14-18°F) from the ambient air temperature entering the system.
  3. There are five COOL mode settings based on the position of the temperature controlled seat switch thumb wheel. Positions one is the low setting and position five is the high setting.

  1. If the temperature at one of the TEDs goes below 18°C (64°F), the temperature controlled seat module will shut down the TEDs. If the temperature continues to drop below 12°C (54°F), the temperature controlled seat module will shut down the fan motor.
  2. In COOL mode, there is a linear correlation between the temperature controlled seat switch thumbwheel position, seat fan motor speed, and TED supply voltage. For additional information, refer to the following chart.

The temperature controlled seat system is deactivated by one of the following actions

  1. Pushing the climate controlled switch again to disengage.
  2. Turning the vehicle off.
  3. Cooling times out after 30 minutes.
  4. Heating times out after 15 minutes.

  1. Verify the customer concern by operating the power seat, memory seat or climate controlled seat functions.
  2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage.
  3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  4. If the concern is with the power seat (non-memory seat) or the power lumbar and the cause is not visually evident, verify the symptom and GO to «SYMPTOM CHART»(ref-193029-S38589273082005092300000) .
  5. If the concern is with the memory seat or climate controlled seat and the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the data link connector (DLC) and select the vehicle to be tested from the scan tool menu. If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle: Check that the program card is correctly installed. Check the connections to the vehicle. Check the ignition switch position.
  6. If the scan tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the scan tool manual.
  7. Carry out the DATA LINK DIAGNOSTICS test. If the scan tool responds with: SCP+, SCP-, or UBP circuit fault; all ECUs no response/not equipped, refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-193023) . No response not equipped for driver DSM, refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-193023) . No response/not equipped for climate controlled seat module, refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-193023) . SYSTEM PASSED for the DSM, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), clear the continuous DTCs and carry out self-test diagnostics for the DSM. SYSTEM PASSED for the climate controlled seat module, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), clear the continuous DTCs and carry out self-test diagnostics for the climate controlled seat module.
  8. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to «DSM DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX»(ref-193029-S24483804042005092300000) or the climate controlled Seat Module Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index.
  9. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to «SYMPTOM CHART»(ref-193029-S38589273082005092300000) .

Pinpoint Tests

CAUTIONElectronic modules are sensitive to electrostatic discharge. If exposed to these charges, damage may result.

Refer to Inspection and Verification, the DSM Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Table, and the Symptom Chart for direction to the appropriate Pinpoint Test.

Measure the resistance between the following indicated terminals while pressing the requested switches.

The resistance should be less than 5 ohms for each switch position.

If the resistance is not less than 5 ohms for each switch, install a new switch; otherwise, return to the calling pinpoint test.

To check the memory set switch LED, connect the positive meter lead to terminal 8 and the negative lead to terminal 9. The meter should indicate greater than 0.3 volt. Reversing the leads, the meter should read O L.

If the meter readings are not as indicated above, install a new switch; otherwise, return to the calling pinpoint test.

Deactivation

WARNINGAlways wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) vehicle and when handling an air bag module. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNINGCarry a live air bag module with the air bag and trim cover pointed away from your body. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNINGDo not set a live air bag module down with the trim cover face down. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNINGAfter deployment, the air bag surface can contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, a product of the gas generant combustion that is irritating to the skin. Wash your hands with soap and water afterwards.
WARNINGNever probe the connectors on the air bag module. Doing so can result in air bag deployment, which can result in personal injury.
WARNINGThe safety belt pretensioner is a pyrotechnic device. Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag equipped vehicle and when handling a safety belt buckle pretensioner or safety belt retractor pretensioner. Never probe a pretensioner electrical connector. Doing so could result in pretensioner or air bag deployment and could result in personal injury.
WARNINGNever probe the connectors on the safety canopy module. Doing so can result in safety canopy deployment.
WARNINGVehicle sensor orientation is critical for proper system operation. If a vehicle equipped with an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) is involved in a collision, inspect the sensor mounting bracket and wiring pigtail for deformation. Replace and properly position the sensor or any other damaged supplemental restraint system (SRS) components whether or not the air bag is deployed.
WARNINGThe restraint system diagnostic tool is for restraint system service only. Remove from vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.

Note. If a seat equipped with a seat mounted side air bag and/or a safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) system is being serviced, the air bag system must be deactivated .

Note. Restraint system diagnostic tools MUST be installed under the seats in the seat side air bag (if equipped) and safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) to floor connectors.

Note. After diagnosing or repairing an SRS, the restraint system diagnostic tools must be removed before operating the vehicle over the road .

Note. The SRS must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.

  1. The side impact sensors (if equipped) are located at or near the base of the B-pillars and C-pillars. To deplete the backup power supply energy, disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies (if equipped). Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY & CHARGING SYSTEM»(ref-193018) .
  2. Remove the two steering wheel back cover plugs (one shown).
  3. Remove the two driver air bag module bolts (one shown).
  4. Disconnect the driver air bag module. Release the two tabs on each driver air bag module electrical connector and disconnect them. Label each driver air bag module electrical connector before disconnecting.
  5. Release the tab and disconnect the driver air bag module accessories electrical connector at the top of the clockspring and remove the driver air bag module.
  6. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tools to the clockspring electrical connectors at the top of the steering column.
  7. Push in on the glove compartment sides, releasing the stops and lowering it out of the way.
  8. Through the glove compartment opening, release the tab and disconnect the passenger air bag module electrical connector.
  9. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the passenger air bag module electrical connector.
  10. Remove the RH C-pillar trim panel. Pull out and release the retaining clips. Pull out and release the retainer. Lower the door opening weatherstrip, slide the C-pillar trim panel up, releasing the retainers, and remove the C-pillar trim panel.
  11. Disconnect the RH safety canopy electrical connector.
  12. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the RH safety canopy electrical connector.
  13. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY & CHARGING SYSTEM»(ref-193018) .
  14. Move and tilt the front seats to their highest and most forward position.
  15. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY & CHARGING SYSTEM»(ref-193018) .
  16. From under the back of the front RH seat, push in to release the tab and disconnect the front seat restraint system electrical connector.
  17. Attach the front seat restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the RH front seat restraint system electrical connector.
  18. Remove the LH C-pillar trim panel. Pull out and release the retaining clips. Pull out and release the retainer. Lower the door opening weatherstrip, slide the C-pillar trim panel up, releasing the retainers, and remove the C-pillar trim panel.
  19. Disconnect the LH safety canopy electrical connector.
  20. Attach the restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the LH safety canopy electrical connector.
  21. Through the outboard side of the front LH seat, push in to release the tab and disconnect the front seat restraint system electrical connector.
  22. Attach the front seat restraint system diagnostic tool to the vehicle harness side of the LH front seat restraint system electrical connector.
  23. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY & CHARGING SYSTEM»(ref-193018) .
  24. With the restraint system diagnostic tools installed at all deployable devices, prove out the supplemental restraint system (SRS). For additional information, refer to «AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS»(ref-160399) .
  25. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY & CHARGING SYSTEM»(ref-193018) .

Reactivation

WARNINGTo reduce the risk of serious personal injury, read and follow all warnings, cautions, and notes at the beginning of the deactivation procedure.

Note. Make sure the battery negative cable is still disconnected before proceeding with the reactivation procedure.

  1. Remove the front seat restraint system diagnostic tool from the vehicle harness side of the LH front seat restraint system electrical connector.
  2. Through the outboard side of the LH front seat, connect the front seat restraint system electrical connector.
  3. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the LH safety canopy vehicle harness electrical connector.
  4. Connect the LH safety canopy electrical connector.
  5. Align the LH C-pillar trim panel hook to the opening in the sheet metal. The safety belt shoulder height adjuster and the C-pillar trim panel sliding insert must be at their most upward position of travel to aid installation.
  6. Position the LH C-pillar trim panel. With the hook aligned to the sheet metal, position the top of the C-pillar trim panel to the sheet metal. Make sure the safety belt shoulder height adjuster and the C-pillar panel sliding insert are at their most upward position of travel to aid installation. Align and slide down, engaging the front upper trim panel retainer. The C-pillar trim panel sliding insert circular recess must align to the safety belt guide bolt. Align and push in, engaging the front lower trim panel retainer.
  7. Push in on the C-pillar trim panel, seating the retainers.
  8. Remove the front seat restraint system diagnostic tool from the vehicle harness side of the RH front seat restraint system electrical connector.
  9. From under the back of the RH front seat, connect the front seat restraint system electrical connector.
  10. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the RH safety canopy vehicle harness electrical connector.
  11. Connect the RH safety canopy electrical connector.
  12. Align the RH C-pillar trim panel hook to the opening in the sheet metal. The safety belt shoulder height adjuster and the C-pillar trim panel sliding insert must be at their most upward position of travel to aid installation.
  13. Position the RH C-pillar trim panel. With the hook aligned to the sheet metal, position the top of the C-pillar trim panel to the sheet metal. Make sure the safety belt shoulder height adjuster and the C-pillar panel sliding insert are at their most upward position of travel to aid installation. Align and slide down, engaging the front upper trim panel retainer. The C-pillar trim panel sliding insert circular recess must align to the safety belt guide bolt. Align and push in, engaging the front lower trim panel retainer.
  14. Push in on the C-pillar trim panel, seating the retainers.
  15. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY & CHARGING SYSTEM»(ref-193018) .
  16. Position the front seats rearward.
  17. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY & CHARGING SYSTEM»(ref-193018) .
  18. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tool from the vehicle harness side of the passenger air bag module electrical connector.
  19. Connect the passenger air bag module electrical connector.
  20. Close the glove compartment.
  21. Remove the restraint system diagnostic tools from the clockspring electrical connector at the top of the steering column.
  22. Connect the driver air bag module accessories electrical connector to the connector at the top of the clockspring.
  23. Connect the driver air bag module electrical connectors as noted during removal. Position the driver air bag module to the steering wheel.
  24. Install the two driver air bag module bolts (one shown).
  25. Install the two steering wheel back cover plugs (one shown).
