SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
- SYSTEM DESCRIPTION ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) The ABS helps prevent the wheels from locking when the brakes are applied firmly or when braking on a slippery surface. EBD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution) The EBD control utilizes the ABS, realizing the proper brake force distribution between the front and rear wheels in accordance with the driving conditions. In addition, during cornering and braking, it also controls the brake forces of the right and left wheels, helping to maintain the vehicle balance. BA (Brake Assist) The primary purpose of the brake assist system is to provide an auxiliary brake force to assist a driver who cannot generate a large brake force during emergency braking, thus helping improve the vehicle's brake performance. TRAC (Traction Control) The TRAC system helps prevent the drive wheels from slipping if the driver depresses the accelerator pedal excessively when starting off or accelerating on a slippery surface. VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) The VSC system helps prevent the vehicle from slipping sideways as a result of strong front wheel skid or strong rear wheel skid during cornering.
- ABS WITH EBD & BA & TRAC & VSC OPERATION The skid control ECU calculates vehicle stability tendency based on the signal of the speed sensor, yaw rate sensor and steering angle sensor. The ECU judges whether the control of engine output torque by the electronic control throttle and wheel brake pressure by the brake actuator can start based on the calculation results. The SLIP indicator light blinks and the skid control buzzer sounds to inform the driver that the VSC system is operating. The SLIP indicator light also blinks when TRAC is operating, and the operation being performed is displayed.
- FAIL-SAFE FUNCTION When a failure occurs in the ABS & BA & TRAC & VSC systems, the ABS warning light turns on and the ABS & BA & TRAC & VSC operations are prohibited. In addition to this, when there is a failure that disables the EBD operation, the brake warning light also turns on and the EBD operation is prohibited. If a control is prohibited due to a malfunction during its operation, the control will be cut off gradually so that vehicle stability will not change suddenly.

This relay supplies power to each ABS solenoid. After the ignition switch is turned ON, if the initial check is OK, the relay turns on.

- INSPECT STEERING SENSOR (Scheme 16): Identifying Blinking Pattern Remove the steering wheel and column lower cover (see «REMOVAL» ). Disconnect the steering sensor connector. Apply battery voltage between terminals 1 (IG1) and 2 (ESS), and 2 (ESS) and 3 (BAT). Connect an oscilloscope to terminals 9 (SSI-) and 10 (SSI+) of the steering sensor. Turn the steering column shaft slowly and check the signal waveform. OK: Waveform is output as shown above in illustration. HINT: The above signal waveform does not repeat ON and OFF regularly and this ON to OFF interval changes depending on the steering column shaft movement. This sensor detects deceleration on the vehicle. The sensor signal is used in ABS & BA & TRAC & VSC control. If the sensor functions abnormally, the ABS warning light turns on.

The skid control ECU detects malfunctions in the VSC system. When the VSC system's operation is stopped by the skid control ECU, the ECU informs the driver by blinking the VSC OFF indicator light. When the VSC OFF switch is pressed for a short time, TRAC operation is prohibited, and the combination meter's slip indicator light illuminates. When the vehicle is stopped and the VSC OFF switch is pressed for 3 seconds or more, VSC and TRAC system operations are prohibited, and the combination meter's VSC OFF light illuminates. With the system in TRAC OFF mode through the VSC OFF switch, if the vehicle speed becomes high, TRAC operation is automatically changed to an operational state. If the system is in VSC OFF mode, VSC operation is not affected by vehicle speed.
