Front Suspension: Removal & Installation Lexus SC II

Removal

  1. Remove wheel ornament.
  2. Remove front wheel.
  3. Remove bolt and separate speed sensor from steering knuckle. (Scheme 3)
  4. Remove bolts and brake caliper from steering knuckle. Support brake caliper securely.
  5. Remove disc.
  6. Remove upper side of clip and nut. Using special tool, remove steering knuckle from upper control arm. (Scheme 4)
  7. Remove bolts and steering knuckle from lower ball joint.

Installation

  1. Install steering knuckle to lower ball joint with bolts. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000) .
  2. Install steering knuckle to upper control arm with nut and clip. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000) .
  3. Check bearing backlash and axle hub deviation. See «BEARING BACKLASH & AXLE HUB DEVIATION»(ref-156826-S14659127682003073000000) under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION.
  4. Install disc, brake caliper and bolts. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000) .
  5. Connect ABS speed sensor to steering knuckle and tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000) .
  6. Install front wheel and tighten lug nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000) .
  7. Install wheel ornament with bolts. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000) .
  8. Check front wheel alignment. See appropriate SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES article in WHEEL ALIGNMENT.
  9. Check ABS speed sensor signal. See «TEST A: ABS SENSOR SIGNAL CHECK»(ref-153868-S04619130232003042800000) under SYSTEM TESTING in ANTI-LOCK - SC 430.
  1. Remove wheel hub ornament.
  2. Remove front wheel.
  3. Inspect lower ball joint for excessive play. See «LOWER BALL JOINT EXCESSIVE PLAY»(ref-156826-S41816404352003073000000) under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION.
  4. Remove cotter pin and nut. Remove bolts. (Scheme 5)
  5. Using Special Tool (09628-62011), remove lower ball joint. (Scheme 6)
  6. Remove clip and nut. Using Special Tool (09628-62011), disconnect tie rod end from lower ball joint. (Scheme 7)
  7. Inspect lower ball joint boot for damage. Inspect ball joint for rotation condition. See «BALL JOINT ROTATION CHECKING»(ref-156826-S14320794842003073000000) under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION.

  1. Install lower ball joint to lower control arm. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000) . Install NEW cotter pin.
  2. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000) .
  1. Remove wheel hub ornament.
  2. Remove front wheel. Remove engine under cover. (Scheme 8)
  3. Loosen bolts for lower control arm. DO NOT remove. (Scheme 9)
  4. Remove bolt and nut. Disconnect shock absorber from shock absorber bracket. (Scheme 10)
  5. Remove nut and disconnect height control sensor link from shock absorber bracket. (Scheme 11)
  6. Remove bolt and nut and disconnect stabilizer link from stabilizer bar. (Scheme 12)
  7. Remove bolts and steering rack housing bracket No. 2. (Scheme 13)
  8. Remove bolts and separate steering gear assembly. (Scheme 14)
  9. Remove cotter pin and nut. Using Special Tool (09628-62011), disconnect lower control arm from lower ball joint. (Scheme 6)
  10. Remove bolt and shock absorber bracket from lower control arm assembly.
  11. Remove bolts and disconnect lower control arm assembly from suspension lower arm No. 2.
  12. Place matchmarks on camber adjusting cam and suspension crossmember. (Scheme 15) Remove nut, camber adjust cam No. 2, camber adjust cam No. 1 and lower control arm assembly.

  1. Install shock absorber bracket to lower control arm assembly with bolt. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000).
  2. Install lower control arm assembly with camber adjust cam No. 1, camber adjust cam No. 2 and nut. Align matchmarks on camber adjusting cam and suspension crossmember. (Scheme 15) After stabilizing suspension, tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000).
  3. Install lower control arm assembly to lower ball joint. Install nut and NEW cotter pin. (Scheme 16) Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000).
  4. Install bolts and lower control arm assembly. (Scheme 9) After stabilizing suspension, tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000).
  5. Connect steering gear assembly with bolts. (Scheme 14) Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000).
  6. Install steering rack housing bracket No. 2 with bolts. (Scheme 13)
  7. Install stabilizer link to stabilizer bar with bolt and nut. (Scheme 12) Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000).
  8. Install stabilizer link with nut. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000).
  9. Install shock absorber to shock absorber bracket with bolt and nut. (Scheme 10) Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000).
  10. Install height control sensor link to shock absorber bracket with nut. (Scheme 11) Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000).
  11. Install engine under cover.
  12. Install front wheel and tighten lug nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000).
  13. Install wheel hub ornament with bolts. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000).
  14. Check wheel alignment. See appropriate SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES article in WHEEL ALIGNMENT.

  1. Remove bolts and wheel hub ornament.
  2. Remove wheel.
  3. Remove bolt and speed sensor wire harness. (Scheme 17)
  4. Remove clip and nut. Using Special Tool (09628-62011), disconnect upper control arm from steering knuckle. (Scheme 4)
  5. Remove bolt and nut. Disconnect shock absorber from shock absorber bracket. (Scheme 10)
  6. Loosen piston rod lock nut but do NOT remove it. (Scheme 18)
  7. Remove nuts, spring support reinforcement and shock absorber with coil spring. Remove suspension support No. 1 from shock absorber with coil spring.

  1. Install front suspension support assembly to shock absorber with coil spring. Install spring support reinforcement, nuts and shock absorber with coil spring. (Scheme 18) Tighten nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000).
  2. Install New lock nut. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000).
  3. Install bolt and nut to connect shock absorber to shock absorber bracket. (Scheme 10) After stabilizing suspension, tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000).
  4. Connect front suspension upper arm assembly to steering knuckle. Install NEW nut and NEW cotter pin. (Scheme 19) After stabilizing suspension, tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000).
  5. Connect speed sensor wire harness with bolt. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000).
  6. Install front wheel and tighten lug nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000).
  7. Install wheel hub ornament with bolts. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000).
  8. Check front wheel alignment. See appropriate SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES article in WHEEL ALIGNMENT.

Removal & Installation

  1. Remove wheel hub ornament.
  2. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheel.
  3. Remove engine undercover. (Scheme 20)
  4. Remove bolt and nut. Disconnect stabilizer bar from stabilizer bar link. Remove nut and stabilizer link from lower control arm assembly. (Scheme 12)
  5. Inspect front stabilizer link ball joint. See «BALL JOINT ROTATION CHECKING»(ref-156826-S14320794842003073000000) under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION.
  6. Remove bolts, stabilizer bar brackets and stabilizer bar. (Scheme 21)
  7. Remove bushings from stabilizer bar.
  8. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000).

  1. Remove wheel hub ornament.
  2. Remove front wheel.
  3. Remove engine under cover No. 2. (Scheme 22)
  4. Remove nuts and disconnect front suspension member brace from rear right and left. (Scheme 23) Remove bolts and front suspension member brace sub assembly.
  5. Remove strut bar bracket bolt. (Scheme 25)
  6. Remove front suspension arm sub-assembly lower No. 2 and strut bar bracket with 2 bolts and nut. (Scheme 24)

  1. Install front suspension arm sub-assembly lower No. 2 and strut bar bracket with bolts (A) and nut (B). (Scheme 26) Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000).
  2. Install strut bar bracket with bolt. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000).
  3. Install front suspension member brace sub-assembly with bolts. Connect front suspension member brace rear right and left with nuts. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000).
  4. Install engine under cover No. 2.
  5. Install front wheel. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000).
  6. Install wheel ornament with bolts. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000).
  7. Check front wheel alignment. See appropriate SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES article in WHEEL ALIGNMENT.

  1. Remove shock absorber. See «SHOCK ABSORBER WITH COIL SPRING»(ref-156826-S33916062852003073000000).
  2. Remove bolts and upper control arm. (Scheme 27)
  3. Inspect ball joint for rotation condition. See «BALL JOINT CHECKING»(ref-156826-S14320794842003073000000) under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION.
  4. To install, reverse removal procedure. Stabilize suspension. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156826-S09171106322003073000000).
