REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

WARNINGVehicles are equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. When servicing vehicles, use care to avoid accidental air bag deployment. SIR system-related components are located in various locations throughout interior and exterior of vehicles, depending on application. Do not use electrical test equipment on or near these circuits. If necessary, deactivate SIR system before servicing components. See appropriate AIR BAG DEACTIVATION PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. Before disconnecting battery, see appropriate COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

Removal

  1. Remove 4 bolts and front floor brace center.
  2. Remove 2 bolts, left and right rear suspension member braces and frame spacers. (Scheme 73)
  3. Remove oxygen sensor.
  4. Remove exhaust pipe using the following steps: Remove 4 bolts, nuts and 2 gaskets from exhaust manifold. (Scheme 73) Remove exhaust pipe.
  5. Remove 4 bolts and front floor heat insulator No. 1.
  6. Separate shift rod using the following steps: Set gearshift lever to "N" position. Remove nut and disconnect rod.
  7. Remove shift lever using the following steps: Disconnect PNP switch connector. Remove nut and shift lever with shift rod.
  8. Remove PNP switch using the following steps: Pry out lock plate and remove nut. Remove bolt and pull out PNP switch. (Scheme 74)

Installation

  1. Install PNP switch using the following steps: Install PNP switch and temporarily install bolt. Install new lock plate and nut. Temporarily install shift lever with nut. (Scheme 74) Turn lever counterclockwise until it stops, then turn it clockwise 2 notches. (Scheme 75) Remove shift lever. Align groove neutral basic line. Hold switch in position and tighten bolt to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156545-S19235586962003072200000). Using screwdriver, stake nut with lock plate.
  2. Install nut and shift lever with shift rod and connect PNP switch connector.
  3. Temporarily install shift rod to gearshift lever with nut.
  4. Adjust shift lever position. See «SHIFT LEVER»(ref-156545-S01538713622003072200000) under ADJUSTMENTS.
  5. Install 4 bolts and front floor heat insulator No. 1.
  6. Install exhaust pipe with 4 bolts, nuts and 2 new gaskets to exhaust manifold. (Scheme 73) Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156545-S19235586962003072200000).
  7. Install oxygen sensor.
  8. Install right and left rear suspension member braces and frame spacers with 2 bolts.
  9. Install front floor brace center with 2 bolts. Tighten to specification.
  10. Inspect shift lever position. See «SHIFT LEVER»(ref-156545-S01538713622003072200000) under ADJUSTMENTS.
  11. Check PNP switch operation. See «PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH»(ref-156545-S40777071032003072200000) under ADJUSTMENTS.
  12. Check exhaust gas leak.
