A/c-Heater System: Removal & Installation Lexus SC I

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

WARNINGTo avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and carefully follow all SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM procedures in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article in ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT SECTION.

Removal

  1. If compressor operates, idle engine for about 10 minutes with A/C system on. Turn engine off. Remove negative battery cable. Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment.
  2. Remove splash shield. Disconnect discharge and suction hoses from compressor. Cap open fittings immediately. Disengage drive belt. Disconnect wiring from compressor. Remove ground wire bolt from compressor. Remove nut, bolts, bracket, and compressor.

Installation

Reverse removal procedure to install compressor. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. If replacing compressor, add 4.1 ounces of refrigerant oil to it before installation. See COMPRESSOR REFRIGERANT OIL CHECKING article in ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT SECTION. Evacuate and charge A/C system. Inspect A/C system for leaks or improper operation.

Remove shift lever knob. Remove upper rear shift console panel. Remove cup holder. Remove upper console panel. Remove radio together with A/C-heater control panel. Separate A/C-heater control panel from radio. To install, reverse removal procedure.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Remove water valve. See «WATER VALVE R & I»(ref-125180-S07049346732001100400000) . Remove brake tube bracket bolts from engine bulkhead. Remove Anti-Lock Brake (ABS) actuator. Disconnect refrigerant lines. Cap opening fittings to prevent contamination.
  2. Disconnect equalizer tube from evaporator pressure regulator. Disconnect hoses from heater core fittings. Remove insulator retainer. Remove instrument panel reinforcement. See «INSTRUMENT PANEL R & I»(ref-125180-S31956268872001100400000) . Remove carpet. Remove air ducts. Remove connector bracket. Unplug electrical connectors from A/C unit. Remove 6 bolts, and remove A/C unit.

To install, reverse removal procedure. After installing ABS actuator, fill brake reservoir, and bleed brake system. Evacuate and recharge A/C system. Refill cooling system.

Remove instrument panel reinforcement. Instrument panel must be removed to access the instrument panel reinforcement. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL R & I . Unplug air inlet servomotor connector. Remove control link. Remove air inlet servomotor. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Remove A/C unit. See A/C UNIT R & I. Unplug air mix servomotor connector. Remove air mix servomotor. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Remove the instrument panel reinforcement bracket. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL R & I . Unplug air outlet servomotor connector. Remove air outlet servomotor. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Remove engine undercover. Remove clip and sensor from right bumper reinforcement. Unplug harness connector. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Remove glove box. Lift carpet from passenger footwell. Remove Engine Control Module (ECM) cover. Remove connector bracket. Unplug wiring connector. Remove screws and blower motor. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Remove covers from above and below condenser. Disconnect refrigerant lines from condenser. Cap open fittings immediately. Remove nuts and condenser.

To install, reverse removal procedure. If replacing condenser, add 1.4 ounces of refrigerant oil. Evacuate and charge A/C system. Check A/C system for leaks or improper operation.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Remove Anti-Lock Brake (ABS) actuator. Disconnect liquid and suction tubes. Cap open fittings immediately. Disconnect equalizer tube.
  2. Remove undercover from right side of instrument panel. Remove power steering relay box, cooling fan Electronic Control Unit (ECU) and traction control ECU. Lift carpet from passenger footwell. Remove evaporator cover. Remove air duct bolt. Remove evaporator housing and evaporator.

To install, reverse removal procedure. If replacing evaporator, add 1.4 ounces of refrigerant oil. Evacuate and charge A/C system. Inspect A/C system for leaks or improper operation.

Remove evaporator. See EVAPORATOR R & I . Unplug sensor connector. Remove evaporator temperature sensor. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Set temperature control knob to maximum cool position. Drain engine coolant. Remove A/C unit. See A/C UNIT R & I . Remove heater core. To install, reverse removal procedure. Refill cooling system. Inspect for leaks.

Remove undercover from left side of instrument panel. Unplug sensor connector. Remove screw and in-vehicle temperature sensor. To install, reverse removal procedure.

  1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disable air bag system. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article in GENERAL SERVICING. Remove front assist grips, frontpillar garnishes, and front door scuff plates. (Scheme 14) Remove steering wheel and steering column covers. Remove shift lever knob. Open ashtray lid.
  2. Lift front of console panel. Pull console panel upward, toward instrument panel. Remove console panel. Remove cup holder. Remove upper console panel. Remove radio together with A/C-heater control panel. Remove passenger-side undercover. Remove glove box. Remove passenger-side air bag module.
  3. Remove driver-side undercover. Remove console box. Remove center and end pads. Remove engine hood release lever. Disconnect release cable from lever. Remove knee bolster. Remove left and right finish panels. Remove No. 2 and 4 heater-to-register ducts. Remove combination switch.
  4. Remove instrument cluster finish panel. Remove instrument cluster. Remove steering column assembly. Unplug all connectors necessary for removal of instrument panel.
  5. Remove 2 bolts and 2 nuts from instrument panel. Carefully pull instrument panel rearward. Remove instrument panel from vehicle. Remove No. 3 heater-to-register duct. Remove panel reinforcement.
  6. To install, reverse removal procedure. Activate air bag system. Verify air bag system is functioning properly. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article in ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT SECTION.

Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Unplug pressure switch connector, located in liquid line at right side of engine compartment. Remove pressure switch. Cap open fittings immediately. To install, reverse removal procedure. Evacuate and charge A/C system. Inspect A/C system for leaks or improper operation.

Remove left headlight. Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Disconnect tubes from receiver-drier. Cap open fittings immediately. Remove receiver-drier.

To install, reverse removal procedure. If replacing receiver-drier, add 0.4 ounce of refrigerant oil. Evacuate and charge A/C system. Inspect A/C system for leaks or improper operation. Install headlight.

Remove instrument panel. See INSTRUMENT PANEL . Unplug solar sensor harness connector. Remove solar sensor. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Remove A/C unit. See A/C UNIT . Remove clamp and water temperature sensor. To install sensor, reverse removal procedure.

Drain cooling system. Disconnect coolant hoses and vacuum hose. Unplug electrical connector. Remove water valve. To install water valve, reverse removal procedure. Refill cooling system. Inspect for leaks.
