SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

  1. GENERAL This system uses ultrasonic sensors to detect any obstacles at the corners and the rear of the vehicle. The system then informs the driver of the distance between the sensors and the obstacles as well as their positions by indicating them on the multi-information display (in the combination meter) and multi-display (w/ Navigation System) and by sounding a buzzer.
  2.   3. OPERATION EXPLANATION The operating conditions of each ultrasonic sensor differ according to the installation position as shown in the table below. Installation Position Operating Condition Front Corner Sensor Engine switch is on (IG). Intuitive parking assist system is on. Shift position is in any position except P. Vehicle speed is less than approximately 10 km/h (6.2 mph). The sensors stop operating when the vehicle speed exceeds 15 km/h (9.3 mph), and start operating when the vehicle speed drops below 10 km/h (6.2 mph). Rear Corner Sensor Engine switch is on (IG). Intuitive parking assist system is on. Shift lever is in R. Rear Center Sensor Engine switch is on (IG). Intuitive parking assist system is on. Shift lever is in R. When the system operates, the clearance warning ECU*1 or parking assist ECU*2 transmits ultrasonic waves from the ultrasonic sensors. If these waves encounter an obstacle within one or more of the sensors ranges, the waves are reflected back to the sensors, which transmit them to the clearance warning ECU. Based on this information, the clearance warning ECU*1 or parking assist ECU*2 sends signals to the indicator and the clearance warning buzzer. The appropriate distance between the vehicle and the obstacle is then indicated, and the buzzer sounds. *1: w/o Side Monitor System *2: w/ Side Monitor System HINT: Refer to Detection Range Measurement and Display Inspection.   4. COMMUNICATION SIGNALS OF COMPONENTS HINT: Allocation refers to the process of the clearance warning ECU*1 or parking assist ECU*2 setting aside IDs for the sensors. The vehicle has the sensors arranged in 2 groups. There is a front series and a rear series. The sensors are connected in a "daisy chain". *1: w/o Side Monitor System *2: w/ Side Monitor System Initialization mode: An ID is allocated to each sensor and sensor diagnosis is performed. When the initial check is operating (the engine switch is on (IG) and the intuitive parking assist system is on), the clearance warning ECU*1 or parking assist ECU*2 provides power to the first sensors in each series (front left sensor and rear right sensor). *1: w/o Side Monitor System *2: w/ Side Monitor System HINT: Refer to Self-check Function Inspection (Initial Check). Refer to «OPERATION CHECK»(ref-400915-S11697123512011051800000) . After the power is supplied, the front left sensor and rear right sensor enter standby mode to receive an ID from the ECU. When a certain amount of time has elapsed, the ECU sends an ID allocation signal to these sensors. The front left sensor and rear right sensor receive the ID allocation signal from the ECU and perform self-diagnosis. When the sensor self-diagnosis is completed, the ECU sends an ID allocation confirmation signal to these sensors. After the ID allocation confirmation is performed, the ECU provides power to the second sensors in each series (front right sensor and rear right center sensor) via the first sensors. In the same manner as the first sensors, the second sensors enter standby mode. When a certain amount of time has elapsed, the ECU sends an ID allocation signal to the second sensors. The above operation will be repeated until an ID is allocated to the last sensor, which is in the rear series (rear left sensor). Initialization ends when ID allocation to all ultrasonic sensors is completed. Detection mode: After initialization mode is completed, the system switches into detection mode. In detection mode, the clearance warning ECU*1 or parking assist ECU*2 sends information request signals and sensor activation signals to the ultrasonic sensors and receives detection result signals from the sensors. *1: w/o Side Monitor System *2: w/ Side Monitor System The ECU regularly sends ID signals, information request signals, and sensor activation signals to each ultrasonic sensor according to the communication schedule. When a certain amount of time has elapsed (sensor detection operation is completed), the ECU sends an ID signal to the sensor to receive a detection result signal. The ultrasonic sensor sends a detection result signal or detection information signal to the ECU. The above operation is performed repeatedly for each ultrasonic sensor.

OPERATION CHECK

  1. SELF-CHECK FUNCTION INSPECTION (INITIAL CHECK) Turn the engine switch on (IG). Turn the intuitive parking assist system off, or check that the intuitive parking assist system is off. Turn the engine switch off. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Turn the intuitive parking assist system on, and check that the following occurs: 1) After approximately 0.1 seconds, the buzzer sounds for approximately 1 second. 2) The system starts detection operation mode. HINT: During the initial check, the malfunction detection operates and obstacle detection does not operate. In the detection operation mode, the obstacle detection and the malfunction detection operate. If a sensor has an open circuit or a sensor malfunctions because it is wet or frozen, a malfunction display is shown in the multi-information display, and the buzzer sounds. If the engine switch is turned on (IG) while the intuitive parking assist system is on, the buzzer does not sound even though the malfunction detection operates.   2. MALFUNCTION DISPLAY (MULTI-INFORMATION DISPLAY) Open circuit indication If there is an open circuit between the ultrasonic sensor and the clearance warning ECU*1 or parking assist ECU*2 or a sensor is malfunctioning, the malfunction is displayed as shown in the illustration. *1: w/o Side Monitor System *2: w/ Side Monitor System HINT: The example shows an open circuit in the ultrasonic sensor (front left sensor). If a sensor has an open circuit, check for DTCs and troubleshoot according to each inspection procedure. Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-400915-S32230040162011051800000) . Frozen indication If a sensor is covered with foreign matter, such as mud or snow, the affected sensor is displayed as shown in the illustration. HINT: The example shows that the ultrasonic sensor (front left sensor) is covered with foreign matter. If "CLEAN SONAR" is displayed, refer to "Frozen indication is displayed in self-check function" on the Problem Symptoms Table to inspect it.   3. DETECTION RANGE MEASUREMENT AND DISPLAY INSPECTION Detection range measurement: NOTE: Make sure that the vehicle does not move by applying the parking brake firmly. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Move the shift lever to R to check the ultrasonic sensors. Turn the intuitive parking assist system on. Move a 60 mm (2.36 in.) diameter pole near each sensor to measure its detection range. NOTE: These detection ranges are applicable when positioning the 60 mm (2.36 in.) diameter pole parallel or perpendicular to the ground. The detection range varies depending on the measuring method and type of obstacle (such as walls). Clearance Sonar NOTE: The No. 1 ultrasonic sensor side view detection range hatched area (labeled *1) represents the cross section of the top view of the lines of detection range A. The hatched area *1 does not represent the entire side view detection range. Back Sonar When the ultrasonic sensors (front corner sonar) have detected an obstacle, check the displays and buzzer sounds.
