ROAD TEST

  1. PROBLEM SYMPTOM CONFIRMATION Based on the result of the customer problem analysis, try to reproduce the symptoms. If the problem is that the transaxle does not shift up or down, or the shift point is too high or too low, conduct the following road test referring to the automatic shift schedule and attempt to duplicate the problem symptoms.
  2. ROAD TEST NOTE: Perform the test at an Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) temperature 50 to 80°C (122 to 176°F) in the normal operation. D position test: Move the shift lever to D and fully depress the accelerator pedal. Check the following: Check up-shift operation. Check that the 1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4, 4 to 5 and 5 to 6 up-shifts take place, and that the shift points conform to the automatic shift schedule. HINT: 6th Gear Up-shift Prohibition Control ATF temperature is 0°C (32°F) or less. 5th Gear Up-shift Prohibition Control ATF temperature is 0°C (32°F) or less. Lock-up Prohibition Control Brake pedal is depressed. Accelerator pedal is released. Engine coolant temperature is 60°C (140°F) or less. Check for shift shock and slippage. Check for shock and slippage at the 1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4, 4 to 5 and 5 to 6 up-shifts. Check for abnormal noise and vibration. Check for abnormal noise and vibration when up-shifting from 1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4, 4 to 5 and 5 to 6 while driving with the shift lever in D, and also while driving in the lock-up condition. HINT: The check for the cause of abnormal noise and vibration must be done thoroughly as it could also be due to loss of balance in the differential, torque converter clutch, etc. Check kick-down operation. Check vehicle speeds when the 2 to 1, 3 to 2, 4 to 3, 5 to 4, and 6 to 5 kick-downs take place while driving with the shift lever in D. Confirm that each speed is within the applicable vehicle speed range indicated in the automatic shift schedule. Check for abnormal shock and slippage at kick-down. Check the lock-up mechanism. Drive the vehicle with the shift lever in D (4th, 5th or 6th gear) at a steady speed (lock-up ON). Lightly depress the accelerator pedal and check that the engine speed does not change abruptly. HINT: There is no lock-up function in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears. If there is a jump in engine speed, this indicates that lock-up is not operating. S position test Move the shift lever to S and check the following: Check shift operation. With the shift lever in S (while the vehicle is stopped), repeatedly move the shift lever toward "+" and check that the shift position on the combination meter changes as follows: 1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4, 4 to 5 and 5 to 6. While driving in 5th gear with the S5 range selected (at a vehicle speed of approximately 55 to 65 km/h (34 to 40 mph), move the shift lever toward "-" and check if the down-shift to 4th gear and proper engine braking occurs. While driving in 4th gear with the S4 range selected (at a vehicle speed of approximately 30 to 40 km/h (19 to 25 mph), move the shift lever toward "-" and check if the down-shift to 3rd gear and proper engine braking occurs. While driving in 3rd gear with the S3 range selected (at a vehicle speed of approximately 20 to 30 km/h (12 to 19 mph), move the shift lever toward "-" and check if the down-shift to 2nd gear and proper engine braking occurs. While driving in 2nd gear with the S2 range selected (at a vehicle speed of approximately 10 to 20 km/h (6 to 12 mph), move the shift lever toward "-" and check if the down-shift to 1st gear and proper engine braking occurs. HINT: Changing ranges (with the shift lever in S position) is prohibited under either of the following conditions: If down-shifting may cause excessive engine speed. If the driver continuously down-shifts. (Down-shifting to 1st may not be performed.) R position test: Move the shift lever to R and lightly depress the accelerator pedal. Check that the vehicle moves backward without any abnormal noise or vibration. WARNING: Before conducting this test ensure that the test area is free from people and obstructions. P position test: Stop the vehicle on an incline (more than 5°). Then move the shift lever to P and release the parking brake. Check that the parking lock pawl holds the vehicle in place.

MANUAL SHIFTING TEST

  1. PERFORM MANUAL SHIFTING TEST HINT: Using this test, it can be determined whether a problem is in an electrical circuit or if it is a mechanical problem in the transaxle. If any abnormalities are found in the following test, the problem is in the transaxle itself. Disconnect the connector of the TCM. HINT: It is possible to deactivate the electrical shift control by disconnecting the TCM connector. The gears can then be changed mechanically with the shift lever. Drive with the TCM connector disconnected. Move the shift lever to each position to check whether the gear changes as shown in the table below.   4. If the problem still occurs even though there are no malfunctions in any of the circuits, check the TCM and replace it if necessary.

  1. DESCRIPTION When troubleshooting On-Board Diagnostic (OBD II) vehicles, the vehicle must be connected to the OBD II scan tool (complying with SAE J1987). Various data output from the vehicle TCM can then be read. OBD II regulations require that the vehicle on-board computer illuminate the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) on the instrument panel when the computer detects a malfunction in: The emission control system/components The powertrain control components (which affect vehicle emissions) The computer In addition, the applicable Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) prescribed by SAE J2012 are recorded in the TCM memory. When a malfunction does not reoccur, the MIL stays illuminated until the engine switch is turned off, and the MIL turns off when the engine is started. However, the DTCs will remain recorded in the TCM memory. To check DTCs, connect the Techstream to the Data Link Connector 3 (DLC3) of the vehicle. The Techstream displays DTCs, freeze frame data and a variety of engine data. The DTCs and freeze frame data can be cleared with the Techstream. Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-400823-S37187369772011051800000) .
  2. NORMAL MODE AND CHECK MODE The diagnosis system operates in "normal mode" during normal vehicle use. In normal mode, "2 trip detection logic" is used to ensure accurate detection of malfunctions. "Check mode" is also available to technicians as an option. In check mode, "1 trip detection logic" is used for simulating malfunction symptoms and increasing the system's ability to detect malfunctions, including intermittent malfunctions.
  3. 2 TRIP DETECTION LOGIC When a malfunction is first detected, the malfunction is temporarily stored in the TCM memory (1st trip). If the same malfunction is detected during the next drive cycle, the MIL is illuminated (2nd trip).
  4. FREEZE FRAME DATA The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, whether the engine was warmed up or not, whether the air/fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction. The Techstream records freeze frame data in 5 different instances: 1) 3 times before the DTC is set, 2) once when the DTC is set, and 3) once after the DTC is set. These sets of data can be used to simulate the vehicle condition around the time when the malfunction occurred. The data may help in finding the cause of the malfunction, or in judging if the DTC was caused by a temporary malfunction.
  5. CHECK DATA LINK CONNECTOR 3 (DLC3) Check the DLC3. Refer to «GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-400649-S41373024542011051800000)
  6. CHECK MIL Check that the MIL illuminates when turning the engine switch on (IG). If the MIL does not illuminate, there is a problem in the MIL circuit. Refer to «MIL Circuit»(ref-400785-S09336412852011051800000) . When the engine is started, the MIL should turn off.

DTC CHECK / CLEAR

Note. When the diagnosis system is changed from normal mode to check mode or vice versa, all DTCs and freeze frame data recorded in normal mode are cleared. Before changing modes, always check and make a note of DTCs and freeze frame data.

HINT

  1. DTCs which are stored in the TCM can be displayed on the Techstream. The Techstream can display the current, pending and permanent DTCs.
  2. If a malfunction is detected during the current driving cycle, current and permanent DTCs are stored.
  3. Some DTCs are not stored if the TCM does not detect the same malfunction again during a second consecutive driving cycle. However, such malfunctions, detected on only one occasion, are stored as pending DTCs.
  4. Current and pending DTCs can be cleared by using the Techstream or by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal. However, permanent DTCs cannot be cleared using either of these two methods.
  5. After clearing current DTCs using the Techstream (or by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal), permanent DTCs can be cleared when the system is determined to be normal for the relevant DTCs and then the universal trip is performed.

Check the DTC(s) and freeze frame data, and then write them down. Check the details of the DTC(s). Refer to «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART»(ref-400823-S12627040952011051800000) .
  2. CLEAR DTC (Pending and Current DTC) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / ECT / Trouble Codes. Clear the DTCs.
  3. CLEAR PERMANENT DTC HINT: Even if the following procedure is not performed, permanent DTCs are cleared if no malfunction are detected during 3 consecutive driving cycles. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes. Check if permanent DTCs are stored. HINT: If permanent DTCs are not output, it is not necessary to continue this procedure. Clear DTCs. Perform the universal trip. Idle the engine for 30 seconds or more. Drive the vehicle at 40 km/h (25 mph) or more for a total of 5 minutes or more. HINT: It is possible to complete the drive pattern even if the vehicle decelerates to less than 40 km/h (25 mph) during the driving cycle provided that the vehicle is driven at 40 km/h (25 mph) or more for a total of 5 minutes. When accelerating through the gears, make sure the vehicle is driven so all gears are used in order and no gears are skipped. Allow 10 minutes or more to elapse from the time the engine is started. Turn the engine switch off. Wait 15 seconds. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Enter the following menus: Powertrain / ECT / Trouble Codes. Check that the permanent DTCs have been cleared. Note. When the diagnosis system is changed from normal mode to check mode or vice versa, all DTCs and freeze frame data recorded in normal mode are cleared. Before changing modes, always check and make a note of DTCs and freeze frame data.

HINT

  1. DTCs which are stored in the TCM can be displayed on the Techstream. The Techstream can display the current, pending and permanent DTCs.
  2. If a malfunction is detected during the current driving cycle, current and permanent DTCs are stored.
  3. Some DTCs are not stored if the TCM does not detect the same malfunction again during a second consecutive driving cycle. However, such malfunctions, detected on only one occasion, are stored as pending DTCs.

2 TRIP DETECTION EXAMPLES

  2. CHECK MODE PROCEDURE Make sure that the following conditions are met: Battery positive voltage 11 V or more. Throttle valve fully closed. Shift lever in P or N. A/C off. Turn the engine switch off. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / ECT / Check Mode. Change the TCM to check mode. Make sure the MIL flashes as shown in the illustration. This non-intrusive functional inspection can be very useful because intermittent operation may be discovered before parts or wiring is disturbed.
