ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

Note. "Cold" and "Hot" in this section mean the temperature of the coils themselves. "Cold" is from -10°C (14°F) to 50°C (122°F) and "Hot" is from 50°C (122°F) to 100°C (212°F).

  1. INSPECT IGNITION COIL WITH IGNITER AND PERFORM SPARK TEST Check for DTCs. NOTE: If any DTC is present, perform troubleshooting in accordance with the procedures for that DTC. Check that spark occurs. Set the vehicle to inspection mode. (See «REPAIR INSTRUCTION»(ref-282976-S00474831072008041400000) ) Warm up and stop the engine. Remove the intake air surge tank. (See «REMOVAL»(ref-282995-S34129363212008041400000) ) NOTE: If the throttle body connector is disconnected because the DTC is detected in inspection, always reconnect it. Disconnect the 6 injector connectors. Remove the ignition coils with igniter. NOTE: If the ignition coil assembly connector is disconnected because the DTC is detected in inspection, always reconnect it. Using a 16 mm (0.63 in.) plug wrench, remove the spark plugs. Install the spark plugs to each ignition coil with igniter. Ground the spark plugs. Connect the intelligent tester (with CAN VIM) to the DLC3. NOTE: Check the fully charged battery to indicate HV battery voltage in ECU data monitor. Enter ACTIVE TEST MODE on the intelligent tester. Check if a spark occurs at each spark plug while the engine is being cranked. NOTE: Be sure to ground the spark plug when checking. Replace the ignition coil if physical impact is applied to it. Do not crank the engine for more than 2 seconds. Spark test flow chart. Check that the wire harness side connector of the ignition coil with igniter is securely connected. Result SPARK TEST RESULT REFERENCE Result Proceed to NG Connect securely OK Go to next step Perform spark test on each ignition coil with igniter. Replace the ignition coil with igniter with a normal one. Perform spark test again. Result SPARK TEST RESULT REFERENCE Result Proceed to OK Replace Ignition coil with igniter NG Go to next step Check the power supply to ignition coil with igniter. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Check that battery voltage is applied to the ignition coil positive (+) terminal. Result BATTERY VOLTAGE RESULT REFERENCE Result Proceed to NG Check wiring between ignition switch and ignition coil with igniter OK Go to next step Check the VVT sensor. (See «INSPECTION»(ref-282990-S29833139282008041400000) ) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Torque: 25 N*m (250 kgf*cm, 18 ft.*lbf) Install the ignition coil with igniter. Torque: 8.0 N*m (82 kgf*cm, 71 in.*lbf) Install the intake air surge tank. (See «INSTALLATION»(ref-282995-S10804019082008041400000) ) NOTE: After performing all the procedures, be sure to clear DTCs stored in the memory. Then, check that the normal system code is output.

  1. INSPECT SPARK PLUG NOTE: Do not use a wire brush for cleaning. Do not attempt to adjust the electrode gap of a used spark plug. Check the electrode. Using a megaohmmeter, measure the insulation resistance. Correct insulation resistance: 10 Mohms or higher If the resistance is less then the specified value, proceed to step (b). HINT: If a megaohmmeter is not available, perform the following simple inspection instead. Alternative inspection method: Quickly accelerate the engine to 4,000 rpm 5 times. Remove the spark plug. Visually check the spark plug. Result ELECTRODE CONDITION RESULT REFERENCE Electrode condition Next step Dry Go to next step Wet Proceed to step (c) Reinstall the spark plug. Check the spark plug for any damage to its threads and insulator. If there is any damage, replace the spark plug. Recommended spark plug: SPARK PLUG REFERENCE CHART DENSO made SK20R11 NGK made IFR6A11 Check the spark plug electrode gap. Maximum electrode gap for used spark plug: 1.3 mm (0.051 in.) If the gap is greater than the maximum, replace the spark plug. Correct electrode gap for new spark plug: 1.0 to 1.1 mm (0.039 to 0.043 in.) Clean the spark plugs. If the electrode has traces of wet carbon, clean the electrode with a spark plug cleaner and then dry it. Air pressure: Blow 588 kPa (6 kgf/cm 2 , 85 psi) Duration: 20 seconds or less HINT: If there are traces of oil, remove them with gasoline before using the spark plug cleaner.

  1. REMOVE COOL AIR INTAKE DUCT SEAL (See «REMOVAL»(ref-282992-S02024628612008041400000) )
  2. REMOVE AIR CLEANER CAP W/INLET (See «REMOVAL»(ref-282992-S02024628612008041400000) )
  3. REMOVE VVT SENSOR (for Bank 1) Disconnect the VVT sensor (Bank 1) connector. Remove the bolt, and then remove the VVT sensor (Bank 1).
  4. REMOVE VVT SENSOR (for Bank 2) Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor connector (Bank 2) from the wire harness bracket. Disconnect the VVT sensor (Bank 2) connector. Remove the bolt, and then remove the VVT sensor (Bank 2).

  1. INSPECT VVT SENSOR Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard resistance RESISTANCE REFERENCE CHART Condition Specified Condition Cold 835 to 1,400 ohms Hot 1,060 to 1,645 ohms NOTE: "Cold" and "Hot" mean the temperature of the coils themselves.
