SHIFT LOCK SYSTEM
With ignition on and brake pedal depressed, an input signal is sent from brakelight switch to ECU. With shift lever in Park, an input signal from shift control switch is input to ECU, indicating shift lever is in Park. ECU then operates shift lock solenoid, allowing shift lever movement from Park.
KEY LOCK SYSTEM
With ignition in ON or ACC position and shift lever in Park, shift lock control switch opens and voltage from ECU to key interlock solenoid is interrupted. When voltage to key interlock solenoid is interrupted, ignition key can be turned from ACC to LOCK position.
COMPONENT TESTS
Note. If ignition switch is left in ACC or ON position with shift lever in any gear range except Park for about one hour, ECU then operates to release lock mechanism.

SHIFT LOCK ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT
Access shift lock ECU. see scheme 1and see scheme 2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using DVOM, measure voltage by backprobing between specified shift lock ECU terminals and ground with vehicle operated under specified condition. See appropriate SHIFT LOCK SYSTEM PIN VOLTAGES table. Ensure voltage is as specified.

SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID
- Access shift lock ECU. see scheme 1and see scheme 2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. NOTE: On Avalon (floor shift), Celica, Corolla, ES300, GS300, GS400, RAV4 and RX300; shift lock solenoid is incorporated with shift lock ECU. Voltage tests for shift lock solenoid circuits are not available.
- Disconnect electrical connector from shift lock solenoid. Using DVOM, measure resistance between shift lock solenoid terminals. See «SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID RESISTANCE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-127881-S14224247772001103000000) table. If shift lock solenoid resistance is not within specification, replace shift lock solenoid. If shift lock solenoid resistance is within specification, go to next step.
- Connect jumper wire between positive battery terminal and appropriate shift lock solenoid terminal. Connect an additional jumper wire between ground and appropriate shift lock solenoid terminal. Replace shift lock solenoid if operating sound cannot be heard.

SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID RESISTANCE SPECIFICATIONS
KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID
- Disconnect electrical connector from key interlock solenoid. Using DVOM, measure resistance between appropriate key interlock solenoid terminals. See «KEY INTERLOCK SOLENOID RESISTANCE»(ref-127881-S40176093112001103100000) table. If resistance is not within specification, replace key interlock solenoid. If resistance is within specification, go to next step.
- Connect jumper wire between positive battery terminal and key interlock solenoid terminal No. 1. Connect an additional jumper wire between ground and other key interlock solenoid terminal No. 2. Replace shift lock solenoid if operating sound cannot be heard.

Note. On Avalon (floor shift), Celica, Corolla, ECHO, ES300, GS300, GS400, RAV4 and RX300; shift lock control switch is incorporated in shift lock ECU. No voltage tests for shift lock control switch circuits are available.
- Access shift lock ECU. see scheme 1and see scheme 2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Sienna & Tundra
Ensure shift lock cable does not interfere with wiring harness. Ensure ignition switch turns to LOCK position when shift lever is in "P" position. Ensure brake pedal returns fully. Ensure shift lock is released when brake pedal is depressed with ignition switch in ACC, ON or START position.
Place shift lever in "P" position. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Loosen 2 bolts and ensure pedal button touches pedal plate cushion. Tighten 2 bolts to 97 INCH lbs. (11 N.m).
