REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Removal
- If possible, run A/C system for 10 minutes. Disconnect negative battery cable, and wait at least 90 seconds. Disconnect compressor clutch electrical connector.
- Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Disconnect compressor hoses, and cap hose ends to keep moisture out of system.
- Remove engine undercover (splash) shield, and loosen idler pulley lock nut and compressor drive belt. Remove compressor mounting bolts. Remove compressor.
Installation
To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten mounting bolts and compressor hoses to specified torque. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Evacuate, recharge and leak test system.
Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least 90 seconds. Remove hood lock brace and center brace. Disconnect A/C lines from condenser. Plug all openings. Remove mounting bolts and condenser.
To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten condenser hoses to specified torque. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . If installing a new condenser, add 1.4 ounces of refrigerant oil to condenser. Evacuate, recharge and leak test system.
Disconnect negative battery cable, and wait at least 90 seconds. Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Disconnect refrigerant lines from evaporator. Plug openings. Remove glove box door. Disconnect electrical connectors. Remove evaporator assembly.
Reassembly & Installation
To reassemble and install evaporator assembly, reverse disassembly and removal procedures. If installing a new evaporator core, add 1.4 ounces of refrigerant oil to core before installing. Evacuate, recharge and leak test system.
Scheme 5
Remove evaporator in order to remove expansion valve. See EVAPORATOR ASSEMBLY .
Remove right side kick panel. Remove Engine Control Module (ECM). Disconnect control link. Remove 2 screws securing blower unit lower cover. Release 2 tabs, and remove lower cover. Unplug blower motor connector. Remove 3 screws and blower motor. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Remove evaporator assembly. See EVAPORATOR ASSEMBLY. Drain engine coolant. Disconnect heater hoses from heater core. Remove heater core pipe grommets. Remove instrument panel safety pad and reinforcement. See INSTRUMENT PANEL. Remove A/C system amplifier. see scheme 1 Remove 3 screws and defroster nozzle. Remove one bolt, 2 nuts and heater unit from vehicle.
To reassemble and install heater unit, reverse disassembly and removal procedures.
Scheme 6
Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/ recycling equipment. Disconnect negative battery cable, and wait at least 90 seconds. Remove A/C lines from receiver-drier. Plug all openings. Remove mounting bolts and receiver-drier.
To install, reverse removal procedure. If installing a new receiver-drier, add 0.4 ounce of refrigerant oil to compressor. Evacuate, recharge and leak test system.
Disconnect negative battery cable, and wait at least 90 seconds. Remove front passenger's seat. Disconnect connectors from blower motor and rear heater relay. Remove rear heater relay and resistor. Remove 2 screws and side cover. Remove bolt, 7 screws and blower motor upper cover. Remove 3 screws and rear heater blower motor. To install, reverse removal procedure.
- Remove steering wheel. Remove steering column covers. Remove hood lock release lever, fuel lid release lever and fuse box cover. Remove lower finish panel, lower instrument panel cover, and air duct. Loosen diagnostic connector and fuse block.
- Remove instrument cluster outer finish panel. Scribe mating marks, and remove steering column assembly. Remove instrument cluster inner finish panel and instrument cluster. Remove center instrument panel finish panel with clock attached.
- Using a screwdriver with a taped tip, release 2 fastening claws from upper right corner of center finish panel. Remove cup holder cover and ashtray. Remove center finish panel with A/C-heater control attached. Remove radio, glove box door, speaker panel, speaker, and front console box.
- Remove rear console box trim and rear console box. Remove air bag connector from bracket, and unplug passenger's air bag connector. Remove 9 bolts and 4 screws. (Scheme 7) If necessary, remove instrument panel reinforcement. To install, reverse removal procedure.
