PRECAUTION [01/2012 - ]

  1. TROUBLESHOOTING PRECAUTION When there is a malfunction in the contact point of the terminals or installation problems with parts, removal and installation of the suspected problem parts may return the system to normal either completely or temporarily. In order to determine the malfunctioning area, be sure to check the conditions at the time the malfunction occurred, such as by DTC output and freeze frame data output, and record it before disconnecting each connector or removing and installing parts. Since the vehicle stability control system may be influenced by a malfunction in the other systems, be sure to check for DTCs in the other systems. Be sure to remove and install the hydraulic brake booster and each sensor with the engine switch off unless specified in the inspection procedure. When removing and installing the hydraulic brake booster and each sensor, be sure to check that the normal display is output in test mode inspection and in DTC output inspection after installing all the parts. After replacing the master cylinder solenoid and/or the yaw rate sensor assembly, and after performing a vehicle height adjustment, make sure to perform yaw rate and acceleration sensor zero point calibration and store the system information. Refer to «CALIBRATION [01/2012 - ]»(ref-603951-S15675790552014031100000) . The CAN communication system is used for data communication between the skid control ECU (included in the master cylinder solenoid), ECM, 4 wheel drive control ECU, steering control ECU (VGRS ECU), combination meter assembly, DLC3, steering sensor, and yaw rate sensor assembly (the acceleration sensor is included). If there is trouble in the CAN communication line, the DTC of the communication line is stored. If the DTC of the CAN communication line is stored, repair the malfunction in the communication line first and then troubleshoot the vehicle stability control system. Since the CAN communication line has its own length and route, it cannot be repaired temporarily with a bypass wire, etc.

CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS [01/2012 - ]

  1. DESCRIPTION HINT: A momentary interruption (open circuit) in the connectors and/or wire harness between the sensors and ECUs can be detected through the ECU data monitor function of the Techstream. Turn the engine switch off. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Chassis / ABS/VSC/TRAC / Data List. Select areas where momentary interruptions should be monitored. HINT: A momentary interruption (open circuit) cannot be detected for 3 seconds after the engine switch is turned on (IG) (initial check). If Error is displayed, check for continuity between the ECUs and the sensors or between ECUs. Error remains displayed on the Techstream for 1 second after the harness signal changes from a momentary interruption (open circuit) to normal.   1. DESCRIPTION After replacing VSC-related components, clearing and reading the sensor calibration data and system information is necessary. Follow the chart to perform calibration. PERFORM YAW RATE AND ACCELERATION SENSOR ZERO POINT CALIBRATION AND SYSTEM INFORMATION (WHETHER VGRS IS EQUIPPED) (When Using Techstream) NOTE: While obtaining the zero points, keep the vehicle stationary and do not vibrate, tilt, move, or shake it (do not start the engine). Be sure to perform this procedure on a level surface (with an inclination of less than 1%). Clear the zero point calibration and system information data. Turn the engine switch off. Check that the steering wheel is centered. Check that the shift lever is in P. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Chassis / ABS/VSC/TRAC / Utility / Reset Memory. Select the skid control ECU (master cylinder solenoid) to clear the zero point calibration data using the Techstream. Turn the engine switch off. Perform zero point calibration of the yaw rate and acceleration sensor and store the system information. Turn the engine switch off. Check that the steering wheel is centered. Check that the shift lever is in P. NOTE: DTCs C1210 (Zero Point Calibration of Yaw Rate Sensor Undone) and C1336 (Zero Point Calibration of Acceleration Sensor Undone) are stored if the shift lever is not in P. If a DTC is output that indicates zero point calibration is incomplete, repeat the procedure starting at the step for clearing the zero point calibration data and system information. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Chassis / ABS/VSC/TRAC / Utility / Test Mode. Keep the vehicle stationary on a level surface for 5 seconds or more. Check that the slip indicator light comes on for several seconds and then blinks in the test mode pattern (0.125 seconds on and 0.125 seconds off). HINT: If the slip indicator light does not blink, perform zero point calibration again. The zero point calibration is performed only once after the system enters test mode. Calibration cannot be performed again until the stored data is cleared. Turn the engine switch off and disconnect the Techstream. Check if DTC C120A (ECU Initial Setting Incomplete) is output. HINT: If DTC C120A is not output, calibration was performed successfully.
  3. PERFORM YAW RATE AND ACCELERATION SENSOR ZERO POINT CALIBRATION AND SYSTEM INFORMATION (WHETHER VGRS IS EQUIPPED) (When Using SST Check Wire) NOTE: While obtaining the zero points, keep the vehicle stationary and do not vibrate, tilt, move, or shake it (do not start the engine). Be sure to perform this procedure on a level surface (with an inclination of less than 1%). Clear the zero point calibration and system information data. Turn the engine switch off. Check that the steering wheel is centered. Check that the shift lever is in P. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Using SST, connect and disconnect terminals 12 (TS) and 4 (CG) of the DLC3 4 times or more within 8 seconds. Perform zero point calibration of the yaw rate and acceleration sensor and store the system information. Turn the engine switch off. Check that the steering wheel is centered. Check that the shift lever is in P. NOTE: DTCs 36 (Zero Point Calibration of Yaw Rate Sensor Undone) and 98 (Zero Point Calibration of Acceleration Sensor Undone) are stored if the shift lever is not in P. If a DTC is output that indicates zero point calibration is incomplete, repeat the procedure starting at the step for clearing the zero point calibration data and system information. FREEZE FRAME DATA [01/2012 - ]

  1. FREEZE FRAME DATA Whenever a DTC is stored, the skid control ECU (master cylinder solenoid) stores the current vehicle (sensor) state as freeze frame data. The skid control ECU (master cylinder solenoid) stores the number of times (maximum: 31) the engine switch has been turned from off to on (IG) since the last time the ABS/VSC was activated. HINT: If the vehicle is stopped or at a low speed (7 km/h (4 mph) or less), or if a DTC is stored, the skid control ECU (master cylinder solenoid) will stop counting the number of times the engine switch has been turned from off to on (IG). Freeze frame data at the time the ABS/VSC operates: The skid control ECU (master cylinder solenoid) stores and updates data whenever the ABS/VSC operates. When the ECU stores data at the time a DTC is stored, the data stored during ABS/VSC operation is cleared. Freeze frame data at the time a DTC is stored: When the skid control ECU (master cylinder solenoid) stores data at the time a DTC is stored, no updates will be performed until the data is cleared.
  2. CHECK FREEZE FRAME DATA Turn the engine switch off. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Chassis / ABS/VSC/TRAC / Trouble Codes. According to the display on the Techstream, select the trouble code data display with freeze frame data.   3. CLEAR FREEZE FRAME DATA NOTE: Clearing the DTCs will also clear the freeze frame data. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Clear the DTCs and freeze frame data. Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR [01/2012 - ]»(ref-603951-S21210594262014031100000) .

FAIL-SAFE CHART [01/2012 - ]

  1. FAIL-SAFE OPERATION If there is a problem with sensor signals or hydraulic brake booster systems, the skid control ECU prohibits power supply to the hydraulic brake booster and informs the ECM of VSC system failure. The hydraulic brake booster turns off each solenoid and the ECM shuts off VSC control (traction control signal) from the skid control ECU accordingly, which results in the vehicle being controlled as if the multi-terrain ABS, A-TRAC and VSC systems were not installed. Multi-terrain ABS control is prohibited, but EBD control continues to the extent that it is possible. If EBD control is impossible, the BRAKE warning light comes on to warn the driver. Refer to «DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM [01/2012 - ]»(ref-603951-S08905501532014031100000) . If a system component has any malfunction before control begins, operation is prohibited. If a system component has any malfunction during control, the system will gradually stop operating so as not to trigger a sudden change in vehicle conditions. If it is impossible to control the systems, the warning light comes on to inform the driver of termination of the systems. Refer to «DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM [01/2012 - ]»(ref-603951-S08905501532014031100000) . VSC control continues as much as possible while the TRAC OFF indicator light is on even when the engine has failed. HINT: If the hydraulic brake booster encounters a malfunction, brake performance is gradually lost and ABS, BA, A-TRAC, VSC, hill-start assist control, Crawl Control and multi-terrain select controls are prohibited. ABS, EBD and BA system: Area of Malfunction Control Method ABS ABS, BA, A-TRAC, VSC, hill-start assist, CRAWL and multi-terrain select control are prohibited. BA system ABS, BA, TRAC, VSC, hill-start assist, CRAWL and multi-terrain select control are prohibited. EBD system ABS, BA, EBD, A-TRAC, VSC, hill-start assist, CRAWL and multi-terrain select control are prohibited. A-TRAC, VSC, CRAWL and hill-start assist control system: HINT: The A-TRAC, VSC, CRAWL and hill-start assist control systems each prohibit different controls depending on the malfunctioning part.   2. SYSTEM TEMPERATURE PROTECTION OPERATION If the A-TRAC, CRAWL or hill-start assist control system has been used constantly for a long time, the temperature of the hydraulic brake booster may excessively increase. If the temperature excessively increases, the skid control buzzer will sound intermittently. If the temperature increases even more, the skid control buzzer sounds for 3 seconds and the indicator light either comes on or blinks. System Indicator Condition A-TRAC and hill-start assist control systems TRAC OFF indicator light comes on. CRAWL system TRAC OFF indicator light comes on. CRAWL indicator light blinks and then turns off. HINT: When the CRAWL indicator light turns off after blinking, CRAWL temporarily becomes nonfunctional, but after the temperature has decreased, pressing the CRAWL switch again will activate CRAWL (even when the temperature decreases, CRAWL will not reactivate automatically). If the systems automatically return to normal operating conditions, the slip indicator light goes off (in the case of the CRAWL system, the CRAWL indicator light also comes on). As this is not a malfunction, no DTC will be stored.
