ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION
Note. In this section, the terms "cold" and "hot" refer to the temperature of the coils. "Cold" means approximately - 10°C (14°F) to 50°C (122°C). "Hot" means approximately 50°C (122°F) to 100°C (212°F).

- INSPECT IGNITION COIL ASSY (WITH IGNITER) AND PERFORM SPARK TEST Check for DTCs. NOTE: If a DTC is present, perform troubleshooting in accordance with the procedure for that DTC. Check if sparks occur. Remove the ignition coil (see «REPLACEMENT»(ref-209414-S06627920402005121000000) ). Remove the spark plug. Install the spark plug to the ignition coil, and connect the ignition coil connector. Disconnect the 8 injector connectors. Ground the spark plug. Visually check if spark occurs while the engine is being cranked. NOTE: Be sure to ground the spark plug when checking. Replace the ignition coil if it is given physical impact. Do not crank the engine for more than 2 seconds. If a spark does not occur, perform the test as follows: Using a 16 mm (0.63 in.) plug wrench, install the spark plugs. Torque: 18 N.m (180 kgf.cm, 13 ft.lbf) Install the ignition coils (see «REPLACEMENT»(ref-209414-S06627920402005121000000) ).

- INSPECT SPARK PLUG NOTE: Do not use a wire brush for cleaning. Do not attempt to adjust the electrode gap of a used spark plug. Check the electrode. Using an mega ohmmeter, measure the insulation resistance. Correct insulation resistance: 10 Mohm or higher If the resistance is less than the specified value, proceed to step ( d ). HINT: If the ohmmeter is not available, perform the following simple inspection instead. Alternative inspection method: Quickly accelerate the engine to 4,000 RPM 5 times. Remove the spark plug. Visually check the spark plug. If the electrode is dry, the spark plug is functioning. Reinstall the spark plug. Proceed to step 3 . If the electrode is damp, proceed to steps (c), ( d ) and ( e ). Check the spark plug for any damage on its thread and insulator. If there is damage, replace the spark plug. If not, reinstall the spark plug. Recommended spark plug: Check the spark plug electrode gap. Maximum electrode gap for used spark plug: 1.3 mm (0.051 in.) If the gap is greater than the maximum, replace the spark plug. Correct electrode gap for new spark plug: 1.0 to 1.1 mm (0.039 to 0.043 in.) NOTE: If adjusting the gap of a new spark plug, bend only the base of the ground electrode. Do not touch the tip. Never attempt to adjust the gap on a used plug. Clean the spark plugs. If the electrode has traces of wet carbon, clean the electrode with a spark plug cleaner and then dry it. Air pressure: 588 kPa (6 kgf/cm 2 , 85 psi) Duration: 20 seconds or less HINT: Only use the spark plug cleaner when the electrode is free of oil. If the electrode has traces of oil, use gasoline to clean off the oil, use gasoline to clean off the oil before using the spark plug cleaner.
- INSPECT CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the terminals. Standard: If the resistance is not as specified, replace the sensor.
- INSPECT CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the terminals. Standard: If the resistance is not as specified, replace the sensor.

- REMOVE OIL LEVEL GAGE SUB-ASSY (See «REPLACEMENT»(ref-209413-S31487977272005121000000) )
- REMOVE IGNITION COIL ASSY Disconnect the ignition coil connector. Remove the bolt and pull out the ignition coil.
- INSTALL IGNITION COIL ASSY Connect a new ignition coil to the spark plug, attach the ignition coil to the cylinder head cover, and install the bolt. Torque: 7.5 N.m (76 kgf.cm, 66 in. lbf) Connect the ignition coil connector.

- INSTALL CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR Install a new sensor with the bolt and stud bolt. Torque: 7.5 N.m (76 kgf.cm, 66 in. lbf)
- INSTALL TIMING BELT COVER SUB-ASSY NO.3 LH (See «REPLACEMENT»(ref-209391-S19806882892005121000000) )
- CONNECT RADIATOR HOSE NO.1
- INSTALL AIR CLEANER INLET NO.1 (See «REPLACEMENT»(ref-209391-S22492273942005121000000) )
- INSTALL ENGINE ROOM SIDE COVER

- REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER NO.1
- REMOVE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR Disconnect the sensor connector. Remove the bolt and sensor.
- INSTALL CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR Install a new sensor with the bolt. Torque: 6.5 N.m (65 kgf.cm, 58 in. lbf) Connect the sensor connector.
