VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT
Note. Adjust valve clearance with engine cold.

- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove engine "V" bank and side covers. Remove air cleaner and intake air duct. Remove ignition coils. Remove retaining bolt and remove engine oil dipstick and guide tube. Remove retaining bolt and remove transmission dipstick and guide tube.
- Remove PCV hose from LH valve cover. Remove 2 EVAP hoses and bracket from LH valve cover. Remove wire harness retaining clamp from LH valve cover bracket. Remove bolt and remove wire harness clamp bracket from front RH camshaft bearing cap. Remove valve cover retaining bolts and remove valve covers.
- Rotate crankshaft clockwise so No. 1 cylinder is at TDC on compression stroke. No. 1 is front cylinder on left side when viewed from rear of engine. Ensure timing mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with "0" mark on timing belt cover, and dot marks on LH camshaft gears align with each other. (Scheme 2)
- If timing marks do not align, rotate crankshaft clockwise one revolution, and recheck alignment.
- Using a feeler gauge, measure and record valve clearance between valve lifter and camshaft on specified valves shown. (Scheme 3) Ensure valve clearance is within specification. See «VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-131978-S34959202462002010500000) table.
- Rotate crankshaft clockwise one full revolution (360 degrees), and realign crankshaft pulley timing mark with "0" mark on timing belt cover. Measure and record valve clearance between valve lifter and camshaft on specified valves as shown. (Scheme 4) Ensure valve clearance is within specification. See «VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-131978-S34959202462002010500000) table. VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS (1) Application In. (mm) Exhaust Valve.010-.014 (.25-.36) Intake Valve.006-.010 (.15-.25) (1) Adjust valve clearance with engine cold.
- If valve clearance requires adjustment, remove timing belt. See «TIMING BELT»(ref-131978-S15835946542002010500000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove camshafts. See «CAMSHAFT»(ref-131978-S29833318072002010500000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Carefully remove valve lifter and adjusting shim. DO NOT allow adjusting shim to drop into cylinder head when removing lifter.
- Using an outside micrometer, measure and record thickness of adjusting shim removed. Using measured valve clearance, added to measured shim thickness, select proper replacement adjusting shim. (Scheme 5)and (Scheme 6). Install NEW selected adjusting shim and reinstall lifter.
- Reinstall camshafts. See «CAMSHAFTS»(ref-131978-S29833318072002010500000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Reinstall timing belt. See «TIMING BELT»(ref-131978-S15835946542002010500000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Recheck valve clearance.
- To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-131978-S04317680092002010500000).
