Servicing - A/t: Other Lexus LS II

Transmission & Transaxle

  1. Check transmission fluid with engine and transmission at 158-176°F (70-80°C). Park vehicle on a level surface and set parking brake.
  2. With engine idling and parking brake engaged, move shift lever from "P" to "L" position and return to "P" position. Remove and clean dipstick. Insert dipstick fully into tube. Remove and verify fluid level is in HOT range on dipstick. Add fluid as necessary.

Transmission

  1. Remove drain plug to drain fluid. If transmission oil filter is to be changed, remove oil pan. Remove oil filter and gasket.
  2. Clean transmission oil pan and replace pan gasket. Install oil filter and gasket. Reinstall transmission oil pan. Tighten bolts. Install drain plug. With engine off, add new fluid through dipstick hole.
  3. Start engine and shift gear selector into all positions. Shift gear selector back into "P" position. Check fluid level. Add fluid to bring level up to COOL mark on dipstick.
  4. Recheck fluid level when engine and transmission reaches operating temperature of 158-176°F (70-80°C). Add fluid up to HOT mark.

LX450 & LX470

  1. Apply parking brake. Loosen control rod nut on control rod at control shaft lever on side of transmission. (Scheme 194) Rotate control shaft lever fully counterclockwise toward rear of vehicle to Park position.
  2. Rotate control shaft lever clockwise 2 notches to Neutral position. Ensure gearshift is in Neutral. While holding control shaft lever lightly counterclockwise back toward Reverse position, tighten control rod nut.
  3. Start engine. Ensure vehicle moves forward when shifting gearshift from Neutral to Drive, and rearward when shifting to Reverse.

Except LX450 & LX470

Loosen nut on control rod. Push control rod fully rearward. Return transmission control shaft 2 notches to Neutral position. Place gear selector lever in "N" position. Hold selector lever lightly toward "R" position and tighten control rod nut to 115 INCH lbs. (13 N.m). Start engine and ensure adjustment is correct.

THROTTLE VALVE CABLE

On LS400 and SC400, remove throttle body cover. On all models, measure distance between outer cable and cable stopper, with accelerator pedal in idle position. Rotate adjuster nuts as required to adjust distance to 0-.04" (0-1.0 mm). (Scheme 195)

SHIFT CABLE

Loosen swivel nut on transmission shift lever linkage under vehicle. Rotate shift lever on transmission fully to rear. Return lever 2 notches to Neutral position. Set in-car gear selector to "N" position. With gear selector in "N" position, lightly hold lever toward "R" position and tighten swivel nut on transmission lever.

PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION (PNP) SWITCH

If vehicle starts in positions other than Neutral and Park, adjust PNP switch. Loosen park/neutral position switch bolt and set shift lever to "N" position. Align groove and neutral base line on park/neutral position switch. (Scheme 196) Hold switch in position and tighten bolt to 48 INCH lbs. (5.4 N.m) on ES300 and LS400, 106 INCH lbs. (12 N.m) on GS300, GS400 and SC400, or 115 INCH lbs. (13 N.m) on LX450/470 and SC300.
