| CAUTION | To prevent accidental air bag deployment, wait at least 20 seconds after disconnecting negative battery cable. |
- Remove battery. Remove air cleaner. Disconnect throttle cable. On models with cruise control, remove actuator cover and disconnect actuator. On all models, disconnect ground strap cables. Remove starter. Disconnect both speed control sensors. Disconnect park/neutral position switch connector.
- Disconnect solenoid connector at bracket. Disconnect shift control cable. Disconnect oil cooler hoses. Remove front transaxle absorber mount bolts. Remove 2 engine side mount bolts (at front of engine compartment).
- Remove starter cable and shift control cable clamp bolts from front frame. Remove exhaust manifold bracket mounting bolts. Remove 5 transaxle-to-engine bolts.
- Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Remove exhaust pipe. Drain differential. Remove engine side and lower covers. Remove axle shafts. See FWD AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVE AXLES.
- Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust front pipe. Remove support bracket from front exhaust pipe and torque converter hole cover. Disconnect 2 hoses at oil cooler.
- Remove rear side engine mounting bolts. Remove stabilizer bar nuts and brackets. Remove stabilizer bar. Remove 2 steering gear mounting bolts. Support steering gear using rope or wire.
- Install engine sling and attach hoist to engine. Remove left and right fender liners. Remove 6 bolts and 4 nuts from engine subframe and remove front engine subframe assembly.
- Support transaxle with appropriate jack. Remove torque converter bolts. Remove remaining transaxle-to-engine bolts. Lower transaxle from vehicle. Remove torque converter.
- Before installation, measure torque converter mounting depth. (Scheme 197) Measure distance between torque converter mounting surface and transmission/transaxle case front surface. See «TORQUE CONVERTER MOUNTING DEPTH»(ref-49486-S41735044762001032600000) table. If distance is less than specified, reposition torque converter until fully seated. Install Black colored torque converter bolt first, and then install remaining bolts.
- To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Refill all fluids to proper levels. Check front wheel alignment and road test vehicle.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove dipstick tube. Disconnect throttle cable. Disconnect oxygen sensor. Remove both tail pipes. Remove front and center exhaust pipes. Remove heat insulator. Remove center floor crossmember brace.
- Disconnect shift control rod from shift lever. Unbolt and remove drive shaft. Note location of all drive shaft adjustment shims and flange bolts. Disconnect both vehicle speed sensor harness connectors. Disconnect O/D direct clutch speed sensor harness connector. Disconnect solenoid harness connector. Disconnect park/neutral position switch harness connector. Unbolt all harness hold-down clamps.
- Disconnect starter harness connections. Disconnect and remove oil cooler pipes. Remove torque converter inspection plate. Remove 6 bolts securing torque converter to flywheel. Using appropriate transmission jack, support transmission.
- Support front and rear of engine. Remove transmission rear support. Unbolt and move starter forward. Remove transmission-to-engine mounting bolts. Move transmission rearward, and lower from vehicle.
- Before installation, measure torque converter mounting depth. (Scheme 197) Measure distance between torque converter mounting surface and transmission/transaxle case front surface. See «TORQUE CONVERTER MOUNTING DEPTH»(ref-49486-S41735044762001032600000) table. If distance is less than specified, reposition torque converter until fully seated. Install Black colored torque converter bolt first, and then install remaining bolts.
- To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Refill all fluids to proper levels. Road test vehicle.
- Remove battery and tray. Loosen cooling fan shroud. Disconnect throttle cable. Remove top starter bolt. Disconnect gear selector lever and transfer case lever from transmission. Remove knob and boot from transfer case lever.
- Remove console box and disconnect electrical connectors. Remove shift lever assembly and transfer case shift lever. Disconnect transmission solenoid and sensor connectors. Disconnect transfer case bleed hose and remove drive shafts. Remove oil filler pipe.
- Loosen ATF cooler fittings. Remove stabilizer bar bracket mounting bolts. Remove lower engine shield. Remove torque converter access cover and remove torque converter mounting bolts. WARNING: Transmission and transfer case assembly is heavy and awkward. If necessary, remove transfer case before removing transmission.
- Remove front and rear drive shafts. Note location of any adjustment shims (if used) and flange bolts. If necessary, remove transfer case from transmission.
- Remove front exhaust pipe assembly. Remove starter and crossmember. Lower transmission. Remove oil cooler pipes and disconnect any remaining wiring connectors. Remove transmission-to-engine mounting bolts. Remove transmission from vehicle.
- Install torque converter on transmission. Measure distance between torque converter mounting surface and transmission case front surface. See «TORQUE CONVERTER MOUNTING DEPTH»(ref-49486-S41735044762001032600000) table.
- To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Adjust gear selector control rod and throttle cable. Check and refill all fluid levels as necessary. Road test vehicle.
