REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

WARNINGTo avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and follow all SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM procedures in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article in the ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT section.

Removal

  1. If compressor operates, idle engine for about 10 minutes with A/C system on. Turn engine off. Disconnect negative battery cable. Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment.
  2. Disconnect discharge and suction lines from compressor. Cap openings immediately. Remove drive belt. Unplug wiring from compressor. Remove ground wire bolt from compressor. Remove nut, bolts, bracket, and compressor.

Installation

Reverse removal procedure to install compressor. Evacuate and charge A/C system. Inspect A/C system for leaks or improper operation.

Remove register from above radio. Remove upper shift console panel. Disconnect connectors necessary for removal. Remove 4 screws. Remove radio together with A/C-heater control assembly. Remove 2 screws, and separate A/C-heater control assembly from radio. see scheme 1 To install, reverse removal procedure.

Remove clip and sensor from right bumper reinforcement. Unplug harness connector. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Remove glove box assembly. Disconnect blower motor connector. Remove 3 screws and blower motor. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Remove glove box assembly. Disconnect connectors necessary for removal. Remove nut and wire harness bracket. Remove screw and connector bracket. Remove 3 bolts, nut and blower unit. (Scheme 14) To install, reverse removal procedure.

Scheme 14: Removal & Installation
  1. Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Remove air cleaner intake hose, upper radiator mounting brackets, hood lock support and horns. Remove receiver-drier with bracket attached. Remove condenser fan.
  2. Disconnect refrigerant lines from condenser. Cap line openings to prevent contamination. Remove 2 upper condenser mounting bolts. Push radiator toward engine, and remove condenser.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Evacuate and charge A/C system. Inspect A/C system for leaks or improper operation.

Remove condenser fan. See CONDENSER . Remove nut and fan. Remove fan resistor. Disconnect wire harness and connector from fan shroud. Remove 3 screws and fan motor. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Remove instrument panel. See INSTRUMENT PANEL . Disconnect appropriate wiring connector. Remove driver's side duct sensor from No. 3 heater-to-register duct. Remove passenger's side duct sensor from No. 1 heater-to-register duct. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Remove blower unit. See BLOWER UNIT . Remove evaporator temperature sensor from blower unit. To install, reverse removal procedure.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Drain engine coolant. Completely draining coolant from engine is not necessary. Disconnect and cap refrigerant lines. Disconnect and cap equalizer tube.
  2. Disconnect control cable from water valve. Remove 2 water valve mounting bolts. Disconnect heater hoses from heater core. Remove instrument panel. See «INSTRUMENT PANEL»(ref-125187-S23878851242001100400000). Remove blower unit. See «BLOWER UNIT»(ref-125187-S41287793832001100400000).
  3. Disconnect A/C unit connectors. Remove rear heater ducts. Remove drain hose. Remove 2 nuts, bolt and A/C unit. (Scheme 15)

To install, reverse removal procedure. Refill and inspect for leaks in cooling system. Evacuate and charge A/C system. Inspect A/C system for leaks or improper operation.

Scheme 15: Installation

Remove undercover from left side of instrument panel. Disconnect aspirator hose from sensor. Remove sensor from instrument panel undercover. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Unplug pressure switch harness connector. Remove pressure switch from liquid tube.

To install pressure switch, reverse removal procedure. Evacuate and charge A/C system. Inspect A/C system for leaks or improper operation.

Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Disconnect and cap tubes from receiver-drier. Remove receiver-drier.

To install, reverse removal procedure. Evacuate and charge A/C system. Inspect A/C system for leaks or improper operation.

  1. Turn ignition off. Disable air bag system. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM. Tilt down and pull out steering wheel. Remove front seats. Remove rear seat cushion. Remove rear seat belt lower side bolt. Remove back of rear seat.
  2. Remove front and rear door scuff plates. Remove back seat side garnish. Remove high-mounted stoplight, speaker grille and trim from rear decking. Remove rear passenger assist grips. Remove rear personal light. Remove roof trim panel, located above rear window. Remove right and left front pillar garnish.
  3. Remove steering column cover. Place wheels straight ahead. Remove 2 steering wheel lower covers. Remove 2 Torx screws. Pull air bag module out enough to unplug connector, and remove module. Store air bag module with module facing up.
  4. Unplug steering wheel connector. Scribe mating marks on steering shaft and steering wheel. Remove steering wheel. Remove parking brake and hood lock release lever. Remove lower left side instrument panel undercover and safety pad. Remove finish plate and end pad. Remove coin box and heater duct. Remove lower right side instrument panel undercover.
  5. Using screwdriver with tip taped, pry out glove box door finish plate. Remove connector from glove box door. Unplug air bag connector. Disconnect connector, remove 3 screws, 2 nuts and glove box assembly.
  6. Remove combination switch with spiral cable attached. Scribe mating marks on yoke and control valve shaft. Loosen upper pinch bolt, and remove lower pinch bolt. Remove yoke and upper bolt. Disconnect 3 connectors. Remove return spring. Remove 4 steering column assembly retaining nuts and steering column assembly.
  7. Using screwdriver with tip taped, pry out register from above A/C-heater control assembly. Remove upper cluster finish panel. Carefully remove instrument cluster. Remove front console panel. Remove lower console cover and lower console box. Remove cup holder and console box.
  8. Remove 5 bolts and 2 nuts securing instrument panel. Unplug connectors necessary for removal, and remove instrument panel. Remove 4 nuts and 6 bolts securing instrument panel reinforcement, and remove reinforcement.
  9. To install, reverse removal procedure. Activate air bag system and verify air bag system is functioning properly. See appropriate AIR BAG SYSTEM SAFETY.

Remove glove box assembly. Unplug solar sensor harness connector. Push solar sensor from top of instrument panel. To install, reverse removal procedure.
