- CHECK JAM PROTECTION FUNCTION HINT: The jam protection function prevents any part of your body from getting caught by accident between the door frame and the door glass during power window operation. NOTE: If the power window motor has been reset, raise and lower the door glass several times using MANUAL function before performing the check. Check that the door glass goes down by approx. 50 mm (1.97 in.) right when something gets caught between the door frame and door glass during power window operation. However, when the opening between the door frame and the door glass is less than 200 mm (7.87 in.), the door glass continues to go down and does not stop until an opening of 200 mm (7.87 in.) is achieved. - DESCRIPTION Data of the system can be read from the Data Link Connector 3 (DLC3) of the vehicle. Therefore, when the system seems to be malfunctioning, use the intelligent tester to check for a malfunction and repair it.
- CHECK DLC3 The vehicle's ECM uses ISO 9141-2 communication protocol. The terminal arrangement of the DLC3 complies with SAE J1962 and matches the ISO 9141-2 format. Standard TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION TABLE Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 7 (Bus + line) - 5 (Signal ground) During communication Pulse generation 4 (Chassis ground) - Body ground Always Below 1 ohms 5 (Signal ground) - Body ground Always Below 1 ohms 16 (B+) - Body ground Always 9 to 14 V HINT: If the screen displays a communication error message after you have connected the cable of the intelligent tester to the DLC3, turned the engine switch on (IG) and used the intelligent tester, the problem may be on the vehicle side or tester side. If communication is normal when the tester is connected to another vehicle, inspect the DLC3 of the original vehicle. If communication is still impossible when the tester is connected to another vehicle, the problem is probably in the tester itself, so consult the Service Department listed in the tester's instruction manual.
- INSPECT BATTERY VOLTAGE Check the battery voltage. Standard voltage: 11 to 14 V If the voltage is below 11 V, replace the battery before proceeding.
- CHECK DIAGNOSIS HINT: If there is a malfunction in the pulse sensor, manually operating the power window switch will cause the power window switch light to blink. The light continues to blink for 43 seconds or until the engine switch is turned off. After 43 seconds, the power window switch light remains on. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Manually operate the power window master switch or power window switch at each door. Check the blinking pattern of the AUTO light. If pattern (A) is displayed, reset the power window regulator motor. If pattern (B) or (C) is displayed, check the wire harness. If the normal pattern is displayed, replace the multiplex network master switch.
DATA LIST/ACTIVE TEST
- USING INTELLIGENT TESTER Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3. Monitor the ECU data by following the prompts on the tester screen. HINT: The intelligent tester has a "Snapshot" function which records the monitored data. Refer to the intelligent tester operator's manual for further details.
- DATA LIST HINT: Using the DATA LIST displayed on the intelligent tester, the value of the switch, sensor, actuator, etc. can be read without part removal. Reading the DATA LIST as the first step of troubleshooting is one way to shorten the labor time. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Read the DATA LIST according to the display on the tester. - ACTIVE TEST HINT: Performing the ACTIVE TEST using the intelligent tester allows you to operate the relay, VSV, actuator, etc. without parts removal. Performing the ACTIVE TEST as the first step of troubleshooting is one way to shorten the labor time. It is possible to display the DATA LIST during the ACTIVE TEST. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Perform the ACTIVE TEST according to the display on the tester.

- REMOVE WINDSHIELD OUTSIDE MOLDING Using a knife, cut off the molding (Scheme 46) NOTE: Do not damage the vehicle body with the knife. Remove the remaining molding from the vehicle body. HINT: When removing, make a partial cut, then pull and remove it by hand.
- REMOVE WINDSHIELD GLASS Pass a piano wire between the vehicle body and glass from the interior. Tie both wire ends to wooden blocks or similar objects. NOTE: When separating the glass, take care not to damage the paint and the interior and exterior ornaments. To prevent the safety pad from being scratched when removing the glass, place a plastic sheet between the piano wire and safety pad. HINT: Apply protective tape to the outer surface to prevent the surface from being scratched. Place matchmarks over the glass and vehicle body on the locations indicated in (Scheme 48). HINT: Matchmarks do not need to be placed if the glass is not going to be reused. Cut off the adhesive by pulling the piano wire around the glass. Using a suction cup, remove the glass. NOTE: Leave as much adhesive on the vehicle body as possible when removing the glass.
- REMOVE NO. 2 WINDSHIELD GLASS STOPPER Using a scraper, remove the No. 2 windshield glass stoppers.
- REMOVE NO. 1 WINDSHIELD GLASS STOPPER Remove the No. 1 windshield glass stoppers.
- CLEAN WINDSHIELD GLASS Using a scraper, remove the damaged stoppers, dam and adhesive sticking to the glass. Clean the outer circumference of the glass with non-residue type solvent. HINT: Leave as much adhesive on the vehicle body as possible. Clean the contact surface of the vehicle body with a piece of shop rag saturated with cleaner. Check that the whole contact surface of the glass rim is perfectly even. Place reference marks between the glass and vehicle body. - REMOVE BACK WINDOW GLASS Pass a piano wire between the vehicle body and glass from the interior. Tie both wire ends to wooden blocks or similar objects. NOTE: When separating the glass from the vehicle, be careful not to damage the vehicle's paint or interior/exterior ornaments. To prevent the instrument panel from being scratched when removing the glass, place a plastic sheet between the piano wire and instrument panel. HINT: Apply protective tape to the outer surface to prevent the surface from being scratched. Place matchmarks over the glass and vehicle body on the locations indicated in (Scheme 66). HINT: Matchmarks do not need to be placed if the glass is not going to be reused. Cut off the adhesive by pulling the piano wire around the glass. Using a suction cup, remove the glass. NOTE: Leave as much adhesive on the vehicle body as possible when removing the glass.

- INSTALL BACK WINDOW GLASS Clean and shape the contact surface of the vehicle body. Using a knife, cut away any rough adhesive on the contact surface of the vehicle body to ensure the appropriate surface shape. NOTE: Be careful not to damage the vehicle body. HINT: Leave as much adhesive on the vehicle body as possible. Clean the contact surface of the vehicle body with a piece of shop rag saturated with cleaner. HINT: Even if all the adhesive has been removed, clean the vehicle body. Position the glass. Using a suction cup, place the glass in the correct position. Check that the whole contact surface of the glass rim is perfectly even. Place reference marks between the glass and vehicle body. NOTE: Check that the stoppers are attached to the vehicle body correctly. HINT: When reusing the glass, check and correct the reference mark positions. Remove the glass. Using a brush, coat the exposed part of the vehicle body on the vehicle side with Primer M. NOTE: Allow the primer coating to dry for 3 minutes or more. Do not coat the adhesive with Primer M. Do not keep any of the opened Primer M for later use. Using a brush or sponge, coat the edge of the glass and the contact surface with Primer G. NOTE: Allow the primer coating to dry for 3 minutes or more. Do not keep any of the opened Primer G for later use. DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM
- DESCRIPTION The defogger system data can be read from the Data Link Connector 3 (DLC3) of the vehicle. When the system seems to be malfunctioning, use the intelligent tester to check for malfunctions and perform repairs.
- CHECK DLC3 The vehicle uses the ISO 15765-4 for communication protocol. The terminal arrangement of the DLC3 complies with SAE J1962 and matches the ISO 15765-4 format. If the display indicates that a communication error has occurred, there is a problem either with the vehicle or with the intelligent tester. If communication is normal when the tester is connected to another vehicle, inspect the DLC3 of the original vehicle. If communication is still not possible when the tester is connected to another vehicle, the problem may be in the intelligent tester itself. Consult the Service Department listed in the tester's instruction manual.

- PERFORM ACTIVE TEST HINT: Performing the intelligent tester's ACTIVE TEST allows a relay, VSV, actuator and other items to be operated without removing any parts. Performing the ACTIVE TEST early in troubleshooting is one way to save time. The DATA LIST can be displayed during the ACTIVE TEST. Connect the intelligent tester (with CAN VIM) to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Perform the ACTIVE TEST according to the display on the tester. - CHECK REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER SYSTEM OPERATION When the engine switch is turned on (IG) and the defogger switch is pressed, check that the rear window defogger operates. HINT: After 15 minutes, check that the defogger automatically turns OFF.
- INSPECT BACK WINDOW (DEFOGGER WIRE) NOTE: When cleaning the glass, wipe the glass along the wire using a soft and dry cloth. Take care not to damage the wires. Do not use detergents or glass cleaners that have abrasive ingredients. When measuring voltage, wrap a piece of tin foil around the tip of the negative rester probe and press the foil against the wire with your finger (Scheme 81) Turn the engine switch on (IG). Turn the defogger switch ON. Check the voltage at the center of each defogger wire (Scheme 82) Standard voltage STANDARD VOLTAGE CRITERIA Voltage Criteria Approx. 5 V Wire is not broken Approx. 10 or 0 V Wire is broken HINT: If there is approximately 10 V, the wire may be faulty between the center of the wire and the wire and on the battery side. If there is no voltage, the wire may be faulty between the center of the wire and the wire end on the ground side. Place the voltmeter's positive (+) lead against the defogger wire on the battery side. Place the voltmeter's negative (-) lead with the foil strip against the wire on the ground side. Slide the positive (+) lead from the battery side to the ground side. The point where the voltage drops from approximately 10 V to 0 V is the place where the defogger wire is broken. HINT: If the defogger wire is not broken, the voltmeter should indicate 0 V at the positive (+) end of the defogger wire but gradually increases to approximately 12 V as the meter probe moves to the other end.

- IF NECESSARY, REPAIR THE DEFOGGER WIRE Clean the broken wire tips with a grease, wax and silicone remover. Place the masking tape along both sides of the wire. Thoroughly mix the repair agent (Dupont paste No. 4817 or equivalent). Using a fine tip brush, apply a small amount of the agent to the wire. After a few minutes, remove the masking tape. NOTE: Do not repair the defogger wire again for at least 24 hours.
