PRECAUTION
- REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION OF THE TIRE PRESSURE WARNING VALVE AND TRANSMITTER When installing a tire, make sure that the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter does not interfere with the tire bead. After completing the operation, remove the valve core to rapidly release the air in the tire and check that the warning light comes on. If the warning light does not come on, the system may be defective. If there is an air leakage, tighten the nut to a force of 4.0 N*m (41 kgf*cm, 35 in.*lbf) and push the valve core 2 or 3 times to remove any dirt attached to the valve core. If air continues to leak, replace the grommet, the washer and the nut. When installing the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter, check whether the rim, grommet, washer and nut are clean. Use a manufacturer specified cap. When putting air into the tire, first install the tire pressure valve straight onto the stem of the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter.
- TIRE AND WHEEL REPLACEMENT OR TIRE ROTATION If replacing a tire, be sure to check the grommet of the tire valve for damage. If necessary, replace the grommet, the washer and the nut. If tires and wheels are replaced, be sure to register the transmitter ID (See «REGISTRATION»(ref-235571-S01517126292006062400000) ).

- INSPECT WHEEL BALANCE Check and adjust the off-the-car balance. If necessary, check and adjust the on-the-car balance. Imbalance after adjustment: 8.0 g (0.018 lb.) or less. HINT: In the case of 16-inch wheels, balance weight should be installed by tapping. NOTE: Remove dirt, oil and water from the surface where the balance weight is to be adhered with a cleaning detergent. Do not touch the sticking surface of the tape. - TIRE PRESSURE WARNING SYSTEM PRECAUTION When the tire pressure warning light comes on, immediately check the pressure of the tire and adjust it to the specified value. Check for DTCs. Changing the tire pressure warning select switch between "MAIN" and "2nd" allows registration of 2 transmitter ID set. Check the tire pressure warning select switch to see whether the tire is registered in "MAIN" or "2nd". If the vehicle is driven without selecting switch state correctly, the tire pressure warning ECU and receiver determines the system is malfunctioning and causes the tire pressure warning light to blink. It is necessary to register the transmitter ID in the tire pressure warning ECU and receiver after replacing the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter and/or tire pressure warning ECU and receiver (See «HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING»(ref-235571-S02578917792006062400000) ). When replacing the tire pressure warning ECU and receiver; Using the DATA LIST, read the transmitter IDs registered in the ECU and make a note of them before removing the tire pressure warning ECU and receiver. Register the transmitter IDs after installing a new tire pressure warning ECU and receiver. Tire and wheel replacement or tire rotation; After tires or wheels are replaced with new tire pressure warning valve and transmitter, it is necessary to register the transmitter IDs. After the set of the tires and wheels are replaced, be sure to select the tire pressure warning select switch. It is not necessary to register the transmitter IDs after tire rotation is performed. After dropping the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter into the tire, disengage the bead from the wheel. NOTE: Be careful not to damage the tire pressure monitor valve because of interference between the sensor and tire bead. The initialization is necessary to reset the warning threshold in accordance with variant tire pressure settings due to tire types. Precautions about the tire pressure; The tire pressures decrease naturally. Register the transmitter IDs in the tire pressure warning ECU and receiver after replacing the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter and installing the tires and wheels on the vehicle. NOTE: The transmitter ID is written on the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter. The ID will be unable to be read after installing the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter on the tire and wheel. Therefore, take a note of the transmitter ID before installing the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter.
- IN CASE OF TIRE AND WHEEL REPLACEMENT When tires and wheels are replaced, always ensure to register the transmitter ID correctly.
- IN CASE OF TIRE ROTATION, REPLACEMENT OF TIRE PRESSURE WARNING ECU AND RECEIVER, TIRE PRESSURE WARNING VALVE AND TRANSMITTER, OR TIRE(S) WITH DIFFERENT TIRE PRESSURE Initialize the tire pressure warning system after any of the following is performed: Replacing the tire pressure warning ECU and receiver or the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter Replacing tire(s) with different tire pressure HINT: The tire pressure warning system will not operate properly if it is not initialized (See «INITIALIZATION»(ref-235571-S20591791182006062400000) ).
- FAIL-SAFE FUNCTION When a malfunction occurs in the tire pressure warning system, the tire pressure warning light blinks and informs the driver of the system failure. The result of this diagnosis is stored in the tire pressure warning ECU and receiver.

- DESCRIPTION OF SYSTEM A tire pressure warning valve and transmitter is equipped with a tire pressure sensor and a transmitter and is installed in a tire wheel assembly. The sensor measures the tire pressure. The measured value and transmitter ID are transmitted to the tire pressure warning ECU and receiver on the body as radio waves. If the transmitter ID has already been registered, the ECU compares the measured air pressure value with the standard value. When the value is less than the standard value registered in the tire pressure warning ECU and receiver, the warning light on the combination meter comes on. For the differences in the air pressure settings by the type of tires, or the differences in pressure between the front and rear tires, a tire pressure warning reset switch has been newly adopted. TPWS transmitters with different bending angles at the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter have been provided for aluminum wheels. (They are not interchangeable with other wheels.)
- WHEN TIRE PRESSURE WARNING LIGHT IS LIT When the tire pressure warning light does not go off, or when it comes on during driving, check tire pressure. If the tire pressure warning light comes on within several hours after adjusting the tire pressure, the tire may have a slow air leak. If the tire pressure warning light comes on even after adjusting the tire pressure, selection of the tire pressure warning switch "MAIN" / "2nd" may be incorrect. Under the following conditions, the system may not function properly: Areas, facilities or devices that use similar radio frequencies are located in the vicinity of the vehicle. Devices using similar radio frequencies are used in the vehicle. Large amounts snow or ice are stuck to the vehicle, especially on the wheels and around the wheel houses. The battery of the transmitter is depleted. Tires and wheels without tire pressure warning valves and transmitters are used. Snow tires and tire chains are used. The registered set of the tires and wheels does not correspond to the selection of the tire pressure warning select switch. If wheels other than the specified ones are used, the system may not function properly because different radio waves are transmitted from the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter. Depending on the tire type, the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter may not function properly even though the specified wheels are used. The system may not function properly unless it is initialized with the tire pressures at the specified values. The average useful life of the grommet of the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter is approximately 5 years, at which time it must be replaced. Re-tighten the valve nut if air is leaking from, although it is less than 5 years old and there is no problem with grommets. After removing and installing the ECU or a sensor, output a diagnosis code and check that it is a normal code.

Satellite switch The satellite switches include tire pressure warning reset switch and select switch functions. Initialization can be performed by selecting the tire pressure warning reset switch mode on the multi-display and operating the satellite switches. Also, tires can be selected by selecting the tire select switch mode and operating the satellite switches. Tire pressure warning reset switch (satellite switch) Enters the initialization mode for tire or wheel replacement, or tire pressure warning ECU and receiver replacement. HINT: The satellite switch include tire pressure warning reset switch function. Tire pressure warning select switch (satellite switch) When 2 sets of ID are registered in the tire pressure warning ECU and receiver, either of the sets can be selected by changing the switch between "MAIN" and "2nd". HINT: The satellite switch include tire select switch function.
- TIRE PRESSURE WARNING RESET SWITCH (SATELLITE SWITCH) By operating the tire pressure warning reset switch, the tire pressure warning ECU and receiver can be set to issue a warning at an inflation pressure that corresponds to the type of tires. Therefore, the dealer must set the warning threshold to the proper value in order to comply with the local regulations. Operate the tire pressure warning reset switch only after the inflation pressures of 4 tires have been adjusted on the vehicle. To initialize the system, press and hold the tire pressure warning reset switch for 3 seconds or longer with the engine switch on. After the system has been initialized, the warning light blinks 3 times (1 second on, 1 second off). During initialization, the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter measures the inflation pressure of the tires, and registers the signals that are transmitted into the tire pressure warning ECU and receiver at a frequency of one per minute. The initialization process is completed when the signals from the 4 tires have been received. Initialization is usually completed in 2 or 3 minutes.
- TIRE PRESSURE WARNING SELECT SWITCH (SATELLITE SWITCH) This switch is installed at the base of the instrument panel on the driver seat side. The control ECU can be used to register two sets of transmitter IDs, and can select one or the other using the tire pressure warning select switch. Consequently, there is no need to log the ID again each time a tire is changed. Make sure ID registration is performed by your car dealer.
INITIALIZATION
- INITIALIZATION NOTE: Perform initialization after the transmitter ID registration is completed. Initialization is necessary after replacing either the ECU, tires with different tire pressure or tire pressure warning valve and transmitter, or when a new vehicle is delivered. Perform the tire pressure adjustment after the vehicle has sufficiently cooled down. If the vehicle is not sufficiently cooled down, increase the air pressure by 20 to 30 kPa in addition to the specified value. Set the air pressure of 4 wheels, to the specified value. NOTE: Initialization is usually completed in 2 or 3 minutes. When the initialization is completed incorrectly, DTC C2177/77 is memorized after driving the vehicle about 20 minutes or more. The initialization can be terminated by making a short circuit between terminals TC and CG of the DLC3 connector. Confirm that initialization is completed using the intelligent tester. Check that the pressure of each tire is displayed in INIT THRESHOLD 1 to 4. Initialization is completed.

- ENTER TEST MODE HINT: Operation of the low tire pressure warning reset switch (satellite switch) can be checked in TEST MODE. During TEST MODE, the system is not initialized by pressing the tire pressure warning reset switch (satellite switch). The circuit of the tire pressure warning reset switch (satellite switch) can be inspected during this mode. Make sure that the engine switch is off. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Select TEST MODE on the intelligent tester. Perform the tire pressure warning reset switch (satellite switch) test. Press the tire pressure warning reset switch (satellite switch). Check the low tire pressure warning light. - PERFORM SIGNAL CHECK HINT: When entering the signal check mode, the tire pressure warning ECU and receiver sets all the signal check DTCs first. After completing signal check for each inspection item, the DTCs that are determined to be normal by the tire pressure warning ECU and receiver will be cleared. The DTCs for other inspection items may not be cleared when only a certain signal is inspected. When the tester returns to the normal mode from the signal check mode, all the signal check DTCs will be cleared. Make sure that the engine switch is off. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Select the SIGNAL CHECK on intelligent tester. Drive the vehicle at 12 mph (40 km/h) or more for 30 seconds or more. Remove the valve core and rapidly reduce the pressure (above 40 kPa (0.4 kgf/cm 2 , 5.8 psi)/30 sec.). HINT: The transmitter ID can be transmitted by rapidly reducing the tire pressure. Check that the tire pressure warning system test mode DTCs are cleared. - CHECK BATTERY VOLTAGE Battery voltage: 11 to 14 V If the voltage is below 11 V, recharge the battery before proceeding.
- CHECK DLC3 The vehicle's tire pressure warning ECU and receiver uses ISO 9141-2 for communication. The terminal arrangement of DLC3 complies with SAE J1962 and matches the ISO 9141-2 format. Verify the conditions listed in «TERMINAL NO AND CONDITION TABLE»(ref-235571-S01522924272006062400000) : TERMINAL NO. AND CONDITION TABLE Terminal No. Disc. - DTC CHECK (USING SST CHECK WIRE) Check DTCs. Using SST, connect terminals TC and CG of the DLC3. SST 09843-18040 Turn the engine switch on (IG). Read and record any DTCs indicated by the tire pressure warning light on the combination meter. Refer to the illustration on the left as an examples of the normal system code and codes 13 and 43. HINT: If the tire pressure warning light does not indicate any DTCs or the normal system code, inspect the tire pressure warning light circuit or TC and CG terminal circuit. TROUBLE AREA REFERENCE Trouble Area See Procedure Tire pressure warning light circuit «Tire Pressure Warning Light Circuit»(ref-235571-S18000754562006062400000) TC and CG terminal circuit «TC and CG Terminal Circuit»(ref-235571-S33538881552006062400000) If 2 or more malfunctions are indicated at the same time, the lowest numbered DTC is displayed first. Refer to the «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE TABLE»(ref-235571-S26245846312006062400000) for DTC information. After completing the check, turn the engine switch off and remove the SST from the DLC3. - DTC CHECK (USING INTELLIGENT TESTER) Check DTCs. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Read the DTCs following the prompts on the tester screen. HINT: Refer to the intelligent tester operator's manual for further details.
- DTC CLEAR HINT: After repairing the malfunctions, clear the DTCs. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Clear the DTCs following the prompts on the tester screen. HINT: Refer to the intelligent tester operator's manual for further details.
DISPOSAL
The tire pressure warning valve and transmitter is powered by a lithium battery. When disposing of the tire pressure warning valve and transmitter, remove the battery and dispose of it correctly.

- DISPOSE OF TIRE PRESSURE WARNING VALVE AND TRANSMITTER Using a screwdriver, pry off the back cover. The battery and base board covered with silicone resin are exposed. While taking out the battery, disconnect the 2 terminals that connect the battery and the base board.
