VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT

Note. Adjust valve clearance with engine cold.

WARNINGTo prevent air bag deployment, disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least 90 seconds before working on vehicle.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect control cables at throttle body. Disconnect hoses and remove air intake hose located above valve covers. Drain cooling system. Remove coolant hoses from throttle body.
  2. Disconnect PCV hose and necessary coolant hoses, vacuum hoses and electrical connectors for air intake connector and throttle body removal. Remove air intake connector with throttle body attached.
  3. Remove oil filler cap and No. 3 timing belt cover. Remove ignition coils and high-tension cord set assembly. Remove spark plug wires. Disconnect engine wire from cylinder valve covers. Remove bolts, nuts, valve covers and gaskets.
  4. Rotate crankshaft pulley clockwise so cylinder No. 1 is at TDC on compression stroke. Ensure timing mark on crankshaft sprocket aligns with "0" mark on timing belt cover.
  5. Ensure timing marks on camshaft sprockets align with timing marks on No. 4 timing belt cover. (Scheme 8) If timing marks are not aligned, rotate crankshaft clockwise one revolution, and recheck alignment.
  6. Using feeler gauge, measure and record clearance between valve lifter and camshaft on intake valves of cylinders No. 1, 2 and 4, and exhaust valves of cylinders No. 1, 3 and 5.
  7. Rotate crankshaft clockwise one full revolution (360 degrees). Ensure timing mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with "0" mark on No. 1 timing belt cover. Measure and record clearance on intake valves of cylinders No. 3, 5 and 6, and exhaust valves of cylinders No. 2, 4 and 6. Ensure valve clearance is within specification. See «VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-159232-S30434087092003111900000) table. VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS Application (1) In. (mm) Exhaust Valve.010-.014 (.25-.35) Intake Valve.006-.010 (.15-.25) (1) Adjust valve clearance with engine cold.
  8. If valve clearance requires adjustment, rotate camshaft so lobe on valve to be adjusted is facing upward, away from valve lifter. Position notches on valve lifter perpendicular to camshaft. (Scheme 9)
  9. Use Valve Clearance Adjuster Set (SST 09248-55040) to remove adjusting shim. Using SST "A", push downward on valve lifter. Place SST "B" between camshaft and valve lifter. Remove SST "A". (Scheme 9)
  10. Using small screwdriver and magnet, remove adjusting shim. Measure and record thickness of adjusting shim. Using measured clearance and existing shim thickness, select proper replacement adjusting shim from selection chart. (Scheme 11)and (Scheme 12).
  11. Install replacement adjusting shim. Recheck valve clearance. Apply sealant to valve cover sealing areas on front of cylinder head. (Scheme 10) Using NEW gasket, install valve cover. Tighten all bolts/nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-159232-S31757476362003111900000).
  12. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Install NEW gasket to air intake chamber. Place throttle body with intake air connector on cylinder head. Adjust coolant level and control cables.
