3. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL Disable the auto tilt away function by changing the customize parameter. Refer to «CUSTOMIZE PARAMETERS»(/lexus/is-f/i-2007-2014/remont/steering-column/#power-tilt-telescopic-steering-column-diagnostics-introduction__customize-parameters) . NOTE: Record the current customize parameter setting (whether the auto tilt away function is enabled or disabled) in order to restore the current setting after finishing this operation. HINT: Performing the above operation disables the auto tilt away function when the engine switch is turned off. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Operate the tilt and telescopic switch to fully extend and lower the steering column assembly. Turn the engine switch off and disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal. WARNING: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.

7. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY See step 6
8. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER Remove the 3 screws. Disengage the 2 claws to remove the lower steering column cover. NOTE: Do not damage the tilt and telescopic switch. Disengage the claw. Disengage the 4 clips and 2 guides to separate the upper steering column cover.
9. REMOVE TILT AND TELESCOPIC SWITCH See step 9
10. REMOVE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY Disconnect the connectors from the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly. Using pliers, grip the claws of the clip and remove the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly from the steering column assembly.
11. REMOVE DRIVER SIDE KNEE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY HINT: Refer to the instructions for Removal of the driver side knee airbag assembly. Refer to «REMOVAL»(/lexus/is-f/i-2007-2014/remont/restraints-control-systems/#supplemental-restraint-system-service-information) .
12. REMOVE NO. 1 AIR DUCT Disengage the 2 claws and remove the No. 1 air duct.
13. REMOVE BRAKE PEDAL RETURN SPRING . Refer to «REMOVAL - Step 8»(/lexus/is-f/i-2007-2014/remont/mechanical-hydraulic/#brake-other-service-information)
14. SEPARATE STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSEMBLY . Refer to «REMOVAL - Step 8»(/lexus/is-f/i-2007-2014/remont/manual-power-steering/#steering-gear-linkage-service-information)
15. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY Remove the clamp from the steering column hole shield. Disconnect the connectors and wire harness clamps from the steering column assembly. Remove the 4 nuts and steering column assembly.
16. REMOVE STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSEMBLY Put matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly and the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly. Remove the bolt and steering sliding yoke sub-assembly from the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly.
17. REMOVE NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY Put matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly and the steering column assembly. Remove the bolt and the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly from the steering column assembly.

1. REMOVE STEERING LOCK ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY Using a center punch, mark the center of the 2 tapered-head bolts. Using a 3 to 4 mm (0.118 to 0.157 in.) diameter drill bit, drill a hole in the each tapered-head bolt. Using a screw extractor, remove the each tapered-head bolt and steering lock actuator assembly from the steering column assembly.

1. INSPECT STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY (Tilt Motor) Disconnect connector J28 from the tilt motor. Inspect the tilt motor. Connect the positive battery terminal to terminal TIM+ and the negative battery terminal to terminal TIM- of the tilt motor connector. Then confirm that the steering wheel tilts up. OK Steering wheel tilts up. Connect the negative battery terminal to terminal TIM+ and the positive battery terminal to terminal TIM- of the tilt motor connector. Then confirm that the steering wheel tilts down. OK Steering wheel tilts down.
2. INSPECT STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY (Telescopic Motor) Disconnect connector A from the multiplex tilt & telescopic ECU. Inspect the telescopic motor. Connect the positive battery terminal to terminal TEM+ and the negative battery terminal to terminal TEM- of the telescopic motor connector. Then confirm that the steering column contracts. OK Steering column contracts. Connect the negative battery terminal to terminal TEM- and the positive battery terminal to terminal TEM- of the telescopic motor connector. Then confirm that the steering column extends. OK Steering column extends.

1. INSTALL MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU See step 1
2. INSTALL STEERING LOCK ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY Temporarily install the steering lock actuator assembly to the steering column assembly with 2 new tapered-head bolts. Tighten the 2 tapered-head bolts until the bolt heads break off.

INSTALLATION

1. INSTALL NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY Align the matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly and the steering column assembly. Install the bolt. Torque: 35 N*m (360 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf)
2. INSTALL STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSEMBLY Align the matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly and the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly. Temporarily install the bolt. HINT: Torque the bolt after connecting the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly to the power steering link assembly.
3. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY Install the steering column assembly with the 4 nuts. Torque: 26 N*m (260 kgf*cm, 19 ft.*lbf) Connect the connectors and wire harness clamps to the steering column assembly. Install the clamp to the steering column hole shield.
4. INSTALL BRAKE PEDAL RETURN SPRING . Refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 7»(/lexus/is-f/i-2007-2014/remont/mechanical-hydraulic/#brake-other-service-information)
5. INSTALL NO. 1 AIR DUCT Engage the 2 claws to install the No. 1 air duct.
6. CONNECT STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSEMBLY . Refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 4»(/lexus/is-f/i-2007-2014/remont/manual-power-steering/#steering-gear-linkage-service-information)
7. INSTALL DRIVER SIDE KNEE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY HINT: Refer to the instructions for Installation of the driver side knee airbag assembly. Refer to «INSTALLATION»(/lexus/is-f/i-2007-2014/remont/restraints-control-systems/#supplemental-restraint-system-service-information) .
8. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
9. INSTALL TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY Install the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly to the steering column assembly with the clamp. Connect the connectors to the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly.
10. INSTALL TILT AND TELESCOPIC SWITCH See step 1
11. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER Engage the 4 clips and 2 guides to install the upper steering column cover onto the instrument panel cluster finish panel. Engage the claw to install the upper steering column cover. Engage the 2 claws to install the lower steering column cover. NOTE: Do not damage the tilt and telescopic switch. Install the 3 screws. Torque: 2.0 N*m (20 kgf*cm, 18 in.*lbf)

Connect the cable to the negative (-) battery terminal with the front wheels facing straight ahead. Reset the auto tilt away function setting to the previous condition by changing the customize parameter. 6. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY Remove the steering wheel assembly set nut. Put matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and the steering main shaft. Disconnect the connectors from the spiral cable. Install SST to the steering wheel assembly as shown in the illustration. SST: 09950-50013 09951-05010 09952-05010 09953-05020 09954-05021 NOTE: Apply a small amount of grease to the threads and tip of SST (09953-05020) before use. Using SST, remove the steering wheel assembly.
7. REMOVE STEERING SHAKE DAMPER Remove the 2 screws. Remove the steering shake damper from the steering wheel assembly.
8. REMOVE STEERING PAD SWITCH ASSEMBLY . Refer to «REMOVAL - Step 5»(/lexus/is-f/i-2007-2014/remont/entertainment-systems/#audio-video-service-information)

1. INSTALL STEERING PAD ATTACHING SCREW Install the 2 steering wheel pad attaching screws to the lower steering wheel boss cover.
2. INSTALL LOWER STEERING WHEEL BOSS COVER Engage the 2 claws to install the lower steering wheel boss cover to the steering wheel sub-assembly. Install the 2 screws.

NOTE: The connectors on both ends of the wire harness between the telescopic motor and ECU are the same shape. When installing them, connect the connectors of the same color.
