- REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER
- DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT Loosen the radiator drain cock plug. WARNING: Do not loosen the radiator drain cock plug while the engine and radiator are still hot. Pressurized, hot engine coolant and steam may be released and cause serious burns. HINT: Collect the coolant in a container and dispose of it according to local regulations. Remove the radiator reservoir cap, and using a 6 mm socket hexagon wrench, remove the vent plug. Drain coolant. Loosen the 2 cylinder block drain cock plugs.
- ADD ENGINE COOLANT NOTE: Before adding coolant, turn the A/C switch OFF. Total capacity 11.9 liters (12.6 US qts, 10.5 Imp. qts) Tighten the radiator drain cock plug by hand. Tighten the 2 cylinder block drain cock plugs. Torque: 13 N*m (133 kgf*cm, 10 ft.*lbf) Add TOYOTA Super Long Life Coolant (SLLC) into the radiator reservoir. Capacity Approximately 5.0 liters (5.3 US qts, 4.4 Imp. qts) HINT: LEXUS vehicles are filled with TOYOTA SLLC at the factory. In order to avoid damage to the engine cooling system and other technical problems, only use TOYOTA SLLC or similar high quality ethylene glycol based non-silicate, non-amine, non-nitrite, non-borate coolant with long-life hybrid organic acid technology (coolant with long-life hybrid organic acid technology consists of a combination of low phosphates and organic acids). Contact any authorized LEXUS dealer or repairer or another duly qualified and equipped professional for further details. Thermostat opening timing can be confirmed by squeezing the inlet radiator hose and sensing vibrations when the coolant starts to flow inside the hose. Further add coolant into the reservoir until it reaches the FULL line. Squeeze the No. 1 and No. 2 radiator hoses several times, and then check the coolant level. If the coolant level is low, add coolant. Using a 6 mm socket hexagon wrench, install the vent plug. Torque: 1.5 N*m (15 kgf*cm, 13 in.*lbf) Bleed air from the cooling system. NOTE: Before starting the engine, turn the A/C switch off. While idling the engine for approximately 10 minutes, make sure that the coolant remains at the FULL line by adding coolant as necessary. After idling the engine for 10 minutes, add coolant to the level shown in the illustration. Capacity Approximately 2.5 to 3.5 liters (2.6 to 3.7 US qts, 2.2 to 3.1 Imp.qts) Close the radiator reservoir cap, and run the engine at 1500 to 2000 rpm for 5 minutes. HINT: Thermostat opening timing can be confirmed by squeezing the No. 1 radiator hose and sensing vibrations when the SLLC starts to flow inside the hose. WARNING: When squeezing the radiator hose: Wear protective gloves. Be careful as the radiator hose is hot. Keep your hands away from the radiator fan. Stop the engine and wait until the coolant cools down to ambient temperature. WARNING: Do not remove the radiator reservoir cap while the engine and radiator are still hot. Pressurized, hot coolant and steam may be released and cause serious burns. Check the coolant level. If the coolant level is below the FULL line, add coolant until it reaches the FULL line.

The A/C switch is off. Connect the 400 A probe of an ammeter to terminals M+ of the cooling fan motors. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and wait for approximately 10 seconds. Check that the fans stop. Start the engine. Check that the fans stop with the engine idling. HINT: Make sure that the radiator coolant temperature is less than 92°C (198°F). Turn the A/C switch off. Check that the fans operate when the A/C switch is turned ON (MAX COOL). Measure the current according to the value(s) in the table below. - CHECK RADIATOR CAP SUB-ASSEMBLY Measure the valve opening pressure. If there are water stains or foreign matter on O-ring 1, clean it with water and finger scouring. Check that O-ring 1 is not deformed, cracked or swollen. Apply engine coolant to O-ring 1 and rubber packing 2 before using a radiator cap tester. When using the cap tester, tilt it more than 30°. Pump the cap tester several times, and check the maximum pressure*. Pump speed 1 pump per second *: Even if the cap cannot maintain the maximum pressure, it is not a defect. Judgment Criterion Item Specified Condition Standard value (for brand-new cap) 93 to 123 kPa (1.0 to 1.2 kgf/cm 2 , 13.5 to 17 psi) Minimum standard value (for used cap) 79 kPa (0.8 kgf/cm 2 , 11.4 psi) If the maximum pressure is less than the minimum standard value, replace the radiator reservoir cap sub-assembly.
- CHECK FINS FOR BLOCKAGE Check that the radiator and condenser are not blocked with leaves, dirt, or insects. Clean the hose connections. If the fins are blocked, wash them with water or a steam cleaner. NOTE: If the distance between the steam cleaner and core is too close, the fins may be damaged. Keep the following injection distance. Standard Injection Distance Injection Distance Injection Pressure 300 mm (11.8 in.) 2942 to 4903 kPa (30 to 50 kgf/cm 2 , 427 to 711 psi) 500 mm (19.7 in.) 4903 to 7845 kPa (50 to 80 kgf/cm 2 , 711 to 1138 psi) If the fins are bent, straighten them with a screwdriver or pliers. Never apply water directly into the electric components. Dry the fins with compressed air.
