Pressurized hot engine coolant and steam may be released and cause serious burns. Loosen the radiator drain cock plug. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *1 Radiator Cap *2 Reservoir Tank Cap *3 Radiator Reservoir Tank *4 Radiator Drain Cock Plug *5 Cylinder Block Drain Cock Plug - - Remove the reservoir tank cap and drain the coolant. HINT: Collect the coolant in a container and dispose of it according to the local regulations. Loosen the 2 cylinder block drain cock plugs and drain the coolant from the engine.
  5. ADD ENGINE COOLANT WARNING: Do not remove the radiator cap or reservoir tank cap while the engine and radiator are still hot. Pressurized hot engine coolant and steam may be released and cause serious burns. HINT: Before starting the engine to warm up the engine, turn the A/C switch off. Tighten the 2 cylinder block drain cock plugs. Torque: 13 N*m (130 kgf*cm, 9 ft.*lbf) Tighten the radiator drain cock plug. Remove the reservoir tank cap and radiator cap. Add coolant through the radiator reservoir tank filler opening until the coolant reaches the "B" line and install the reservoir tank cap. Standard Capacity 9.4 liters (9.9 US qts, 8.3 Imp. qts) TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *1 B Line NOTE: Never use water as a substitute for engine coolant. HINT: TOYOTA vehicles are filled with TOYOTA SLLC at the factory. In order to avoid damage to the engine cooling system and other technical problems, only use TOYOTA SLLC or similar high quality ethylene glycol based non-silicate, non-amine, non-nitrite, non-borate coolant with long-life hybrid organic acid technology (coolant with long-life hybrid organic acid technology is a combination of low phosphates and organic acids). Add engine coolant to the coolant filler opening and install the radiator cap. HINT: Press the No. 1 and No. 2 radiator hoses several times by hand, and then check the level of the coolant. Put the engine in inspection mode. Refer to «INSPECTION MODE PROCEDURE [03/2012 - ]»(ref-600412-S34816019962014022400000) .[*1] Warm up the engine until the thermostat opens. While the thermostat is open, circulate the coolant for several minutes.[*2] WARNING: Wear protective gloves. Be careful as the radiator hoses are hot. Keep your hands away from the radiator fans. NOTE: Immediately after starting the engine, if the radiator reservoir tank does not have any coolant, perform the following: 1) stop the engine, 2) wait until the coolant has cooled down, and 3) add coolant. Do not start the engine when there is no coolant in the radiator reservoir tank. Make sure that the needle does not show an abnormally high temperature. If there is not enough coolant, the engine may overheat. HINT: Press the No. 1 and No. 2 radiator hoses several times by hand, and then check the level of the coolant. The thermostat open timing can be confirmed by pressing the No. 2 radiator hose by hand, and checking when the engine coolant starts to flow inside the hose. Stop the engine, and wait until the engine coolant cools down to ambient temperature. [*3] Check the coolant level in the radiator reservoir tank. [*4] HINT: If the coolant level is below the "Low" line, add coolant through the radiator reservoir tank filler opening until the coolant reaches the "B" line and repeat steps [*1] through [*4]. If the coolant level is above the "FULL" line, drain coolant until the coolant level is between the "FULL" and "LOW" line.

  1. INSPECT FOR COOLANT LEAK HINT: Before performing this inspection, check that there is no coolant leaking from any parts other than the engine water pump. If there are leaks, inspect those areas. Perform this inspection when the engine is cold. Visually inspect the engine compartment for the following conditions: There is a large amount of coolant in the engine compartment or on the underside of the hood near the fan and generator V belt. Liquid coolant is dripping from around the engine water pump. The coolant level in the radiator reservoir tank is below the "LOW" line and there are traces of leakage around the engine water pump. If any of the above conditions exist, replace the engine water pump assembly. If none of the above conditions exist, perform the following inspection (inspection of the area around the engine water pump). Remove the fan and generator V belt. Refer to «REMOVAL [03/2012 - ]»(ref-600560-S22174354152014022400000) . Remove the water pump pulley See step 27 . Inspect the area around the engine water pump. HINT: Check for deposits around the drain plug of the engine water pump. Press a piece of paper towel against the drain plug or deposits on the lip of the drain plug and check that the paper towel is not wet. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *1 Drain Plug If the paper towel is wet, replace the engine water pump assembly. If the paper towel is not wet, thoroughly clean the area around the engine water pump. Install the water pump pulley See step 3 .
  2. INSPECT ENGINE WATER PUMP ASSEMBLY Turn the pulley and check that the water pump bearing moves smoothly and quietly. If necessary, replace the engine water pump assembly. Install the fan and generator V belt. Refer to «INSTALLATION [03/2012 - ]»(ref-600560-S40562405922014022400000) .

  29. REMOVE ENGINE WATER PUMP ASSEMBLY Remove the 16 bolts, engine water pump and water pump gasket.

  1. INSTALL ENGINE WATER PUMP ASSEMBLY Install a new water pump gasket and the engine water pump with the 16 bolts. for bolt A Torque: 21 N*m (214 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf) for bolt B, C Torque: 11 N*m (112 kgf*cm, 8 ft.*lbf) TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION Bolt A Bolt B Bolt C NOTE: Be sure to apply adhesive to the 2 bolts labeled C before reusing them, or replace them with new ones if necessary. Adhesive Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1344, Three Bond 1344 or equivalent Make sure that there is no oil on the threads of the bolts labeled A. STANDARD LENGTH Item Length Bolt A 55 mm (2.17 in.) Bolt B, C 22 mm (0.87 in.)
  2. INSTALL WATER INLET ASSEMBLY Install a new No. 1 water inlet housing gasket and water outlet pipe O-ring. Install the water inlet assembly with the 4 bolts and nut. Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) NOTE: Be careful not to allow the O-ring to get caught between parts. Connect the 4 hoses.
  3. INSTALL WATER PUMP PULLEY Temporarily install the pulley with the 4 bolts. Using SST, hold the pulley and tighten the 4 bolts. SST: 09960-10010 09962-01000 09963-00700 Torque: 21 N*m (214 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf)

  6. DISCONNECT NO. 2 RADIATOR HOSE Disconnect the No. 2 radiator hose from the water inlet with thermostat sub-assembly.
  7. DISCONNECT NO. 6 WATER BY-PASS HOSE Disconnect the No. 6 water by-pass hose from the water inlet assembly.
  8. REMOVE WATER INLET WITH THERMOSTAT SUB-ASSEMBLY Remove the 3 nuts, the water inlet with thermostat sub-assembly, and the gasket.

  1. INSPECT WATER INLET WITH THERMOSTAT SUB-ASSEMBLY HINT: The valve opening temperature is inscribed on the thermostat. Immerse the thermostat in water, and then gradually heat the water. Check the valve opening temperature of the thermostat. Standard valve opening temperature 80 to 84°C (176 to 183°F) If the valve opening temperature is not as specified, replace the water inlet with thermostat sub-assembly. Check the valve lift. Standard valve lift 8.0 mm (0.315 in.) or more at 95°C (203°F) TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *1 Valve Lift If the valve lift is not as specified, replace the water inlet with thermostat sub-assembly. Check that the valve is fully closed when the water inlet with thermostat sub-assembly is at a low temperature (below 77°C (171°F)). If not fully closed, replace the water inlet with thermostat sub-assembly.
