REMOVAL

WARNINGSome of these service operations affect the SRS airbag system. Read the precautionary notices concerning the SRS airbag system before servicing. Refer to PRECAUTION .

  1. PRECAUTION Precaution. Refer to «PRECAUTION»(ref-387139-S22444637192011022400000) .
  2. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
  3. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL Disable the auto tilt away function by changing the customize parameter. Refer to «CUSTOMIZE PARAMETERS»(ref-387140-S08013713222011022400000) . NOTE: Record the current customize parameter setting (whether the auto tilt away function is enabled or disabled) in order to restore the current setting after finishing this operation. HINT: Performing the above operation disables the auto tilt away function when the engine switch is turned off. Turn the power switch on (IG). Operate the tilt and telescopic switch to fully extend and lower the steering column assembly. Turn the power switch off and disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal. WARNING: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system. NOTE: When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected. Refer to «INITIALIZATION»(ref-386951-S21829001392011022400000) .
  4. REMOVE DRIVER SIDE KNEE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY HINT: Refer to the instructions for Removal of the driver side knee airbag assembly. Refer to «REMOVAL»(ref-386976-S06204601062011022400000) .
  5. REMOVE NO. 2 STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER . Refer to «REMOVAL - Step 4»(ref-386976-S33383103072011022400000)
  6. REMOVE NO. 3 STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER . Refer to «REMOVAL - Step 3»(ref-386976-S33383103072011022400000)
  7. REMOVE STEERING PAD . Refer to «REMOVAL - Step 5»(ref-386976-S33383103072011022400000)
  8. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY Remove the steering wheel set nut. Put matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft. Using SST, remove the steering wheel. SST: 09950-50013 09951-05010 09952-05010 09953-05020 09954-05011
  9. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER Remove the 3 screws. Detach the 2 claws to remove the steering column cover lower. NOTE: Do not damage the tilt and telescopic switch. Detach the 4 clips. Detach the claw to remove the steering column cover upper.
  10. REMOVE TILT AND TELESCOPIC SWITCH Disconnect the connector. Using a screwdriver, detach the claw and pull out the tilt and telescopic switch. NOTE: Pushing on the claw too hard will break the claw. HINT: Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
  11. REMOVE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY Remove the clamp and turn signal switch with spiral cable from the steering column.
  12. REMOVE NO. 1 AIR DUCT Detach the 2 claws and remove the No. 1 air duct.
  13. REMOVE STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSEMBLY NOTE: Make sure that the steering link is centered before performing this step. Loosen the bolt (A) and remove the bolt (B), then slide the steering sliding yoke. HINT: Do not remove the bolt (A). Do not disconnect the steering sliding yoke from the power steering link. Put matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke and the power steering link. Separate the steering sliding yoke from the power steering link. Put matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke and the steering actuator. Remove the bolt and the steering sliding yoke from the steering actuator.
  14. REMOVE MAIN SHAFT LOWER DUST COVER Remove the 2 bolts and main shaft lower dust cover.
  15. SEPARATE STEERING ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY Disconnect the connector and separate the wire harness clamp from the steering actuator assembly. Put matchmarks on the steering actuator assembly and main shaft. Remove the bolt and separate the steering actuator assembly.
  16. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY Disconnect the connectors and wire harness clamps. Remove the 4 nuts and steering column from the instrument panel reinforcement.
  17. REMOVE STEERING ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY Remove the clamp from the steering column hole shield. Put matchmarks on the steering actuator assembly and steering column shield. Remove the steering actuator assembly.

Scheme 29: DISASSEMBLY
  1. REMOVE STEERING LOCK ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY Using a center punch, mark the center of the 2 tapered-head bolts. Using a 3 to 4 mm (0.12 to 0.16 in.) drill, drill a hole in the 2 bolts. Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 bolts and steering lock actuator from the steering column.

  2. INSTALL STEERING LOCK ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY Temporarily install the steering lock actuator with 2 new tapered-head bolts. Tighten the 2 tapered-head bolts until the bolt heads break off.

  1. HANDLING PRECAUTIONS FOR STEERING ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY Be careful that the No. 2 seal lip or boot does not turn outward while carrying or installing the steering actuator assembly. If installing a new steering actuator assembly, make sure that the spiral center lock pin is securely inserted. Do not use the steering actuator assembly if it has been dropped.
  2. INSTALL STEERING ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY Make sure that the power steering link assembly is centered. Install the steering actuator assembly. If installing a new steering actuator assembly : Install the steering actuator assembly with the white paint on the upper surface of the spiral case facing down. NOTE: Do not pull out the center lock pin. If reinstalling the removed steering actuator assembly : Slowly turn the spiral case clockwise until it locks. Turn the spiral case two turns counterclockwise from the lock position. Align the slit of the sliding yoke with the alignment mark (<--). Install the steering actuator assembly with the white paint on the upper surface of the spiral case facing down. Align the matchmarks on the steering actuator assembly and the column hole shield. NOTE: Do not turn the actuator body and the spiral case. Install the clamp to the steering column hole shield.
  3. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY Install the steering column with the 4 nuts. Torque: 26 N*m ( 260 kgf*cm, 19 ft.*lbf) Connect the connectors and wire harness clamps to the steering column.
  4. CONNECT STEERING ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY Align the matchmarks on the steering actuator assembly and the main shaft. Install the bolt. Torque: 35 N*m ( 360 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf)
  5. INSTALL MAIN SHAFT LOWER DUST COVER Connect the connector and wire harness clamp to the steering actuator assembly. HINT: If a new steering actuator assembly was installed, pull out the center lock pin and tighten the clamp of the actuator after this step. Install the main shaft lower dust cover with the 2 bolts. Torque: 7.5 N*m ( 77 kgf*cm, 66 in.*lbf)
  6. INSTALL STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSEMBLY NOTE: Make sure that the steering link is centered performing this step. Align the matchmarks on the steering actuator and steering sliding yoke. Temporarily install the bolt. HINT: Do not tighten the bolt. Align the matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke and the power steering link. Install bolt (A) and tighten the 2 bolts. Torque: 35 N*m ( 360 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf)
  7. INSTALL NO. 1 AIR DUCT Attach the 2 claws to install the No. 1 air duct.
  8. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
  9. INSTALL TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY Install the turn signal switch with spiral cable to the steering column with the clamp.
  10. INSTALL TILT AND TELESCOPIC SWITCH Attach the claw to install the tilt and telescopic switch. Connect the connector.
  11. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER Attach the 4 clips to install the steering column cover upper onto the instrument panel cluster finish panel. Attach the claw to install the steering column cover upper. Attach the 2 claws to install the steering column cover lower. NOTE: Do not damage the tilt and telescopic switch. Using a screwdriver, install the 3 screws. Torque: 2.0 N*m ( 20 kgf*cm, 18 in.*lbf)
  12. ADJUST SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY . Refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 4»(ref-386976-S15365252272011022400000)
  13. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY Align the matchmarks on the steering wheel and steering main shaft. Install the steering wheel set nut. Torque: 50 N*m ( 510 kgf*cm, 37 ft.*lbf)
  14. INSTALL STEERING PAD . Refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 1»(ref-386976-S09305533722011022400000)
  15. INSTALL NO. 3 STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER . Refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 2»(ref-386976-S09305533722011022400000)
  16. INSTALL NO. 2 STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER . Refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 3»(ref-386976-S09305533722011022400000)
  17. INSTALL DRIVER SIDE KNEE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY HINT: Refer to the instructions for Installation of the driver side knee airbag assembly. Refer to «INSTALLATION»(ref-386976-S31626668892011022400000) .
  18. INSPECT STEERING WHEEL CENTER POINT
  19. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL NOTE: Make sure that the cable has been disconnected from the battery terminal for at least 2 seconds before reconnecting the cable. Connect the cable to the negative (-) battery terminal with the front wheels facing straight ahead. When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected. Refer to «INITIALIZATION»(ref-386951-S21829001392011022400000) . Reset the auto tilt away function setting to the previous condition by changing the customize parameter. Refer to «CUSTOMIZE PARAMETERS»(ref-387140-S08013713222011022400000) .
  20. INSPECT STEERING PAD . Refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 5»(ref-386976-S09305533722011022400000)
  21. INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT Inspect the SRS warning light. Refer to «DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM»(ref-387113-S03380841082011022400000) .
  22. PERFORM VARIABLE GEAR RATIO STEERING SYSTEM CALIBRATION Perform variable gear ratio steering system calibration. Refer to «CALIBRATION»(ref-386975-S06876666312011022400000) .

  1. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY HINT: Refer to the instructions for removal of the steering column assembly. Refer to «REMOVAL»(ref-387138-S15380242522011022400000) .
  2. REMOVE STEERING LOCK ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY Using a center punch, mark the center of the 2 tapered-head bolts. Using a 3 to 4 mm (0.12 to 0.16 in.) drill, drill a hole in the 2 bolts. Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 bolts and steering lock actuator from the steering column.
  3. REMOVE MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU Disconnect the ECU connector. Using a screwdriver, remove the 2 screws and ECU.

INSTALLATION

  1. INSTALL MULTIPLEX TILT AND TELESCOPIC ECU Using a screwdriver, install the ECU with the 2 screws. Torque: 1.5 N*m ( 15 kgf*cm, 13 in.*lbf) Connect the ECU connector. NOTE: The connectors on both ends of the wire harness between the telescopic motor and ECU are the same shape. When installing them, connect the connectors of the same color.
  2. INSTALL STEERING LOCK ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY Temporarily install the steering lock actuator with 2 new tapered-head bolts. Tighten the 2 tapered-head bolts until the bolt heads break off.
  3. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY HINT: Refer to the instructions for installation of the steering column assembly. Refer to «INSTALLATION»(ref-387138-S07481291252011022400000) .

  3. REMOVE STEERING CONTROL ECU Disconnect the 3 ECU connectors. Remove the 3 screws and ECU.

Scheme 42: INSTALLATION
  1. INSTALL STEERING CONTROL ECU Install the ECU with the 3 screws. HINT: Align positioning boss (A) of the blower with the hole of the ECU. Securely detach the hook (B) of the ECU with the blower. Connect the 3 ECU connectors.
  2. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL NO. 2 UNDER COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY . Refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 7»(ref-387101-S06767646592011022400000)
  3. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL NOTE: When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected. Refer to «INITIALIZATION»(ref-386951-S21829001392011022400000) .
  4. PERFORM VARIABLE GEAR RATIO STEERING SYSTEM CALIBRATION Perform variable gear ratio steering system calibration. Refer to «CALIBRATION»(ref-386975-S06876666312011022400000) .
