PRECAUTION
- Care must be taken to replace parts properly because they could affect the performance of the steering system and result in a driving hazard.
- The LEXUS GS300/GS430 is equipped with SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) such as the driver airbag and front passenger airbag. Failure to carry out service operation in the correct sequence could cause the SRS to unexpectedly deployed during servicing, possibly leading to a serious accident. Before servicing (including removal or installation of parts, inspection or replacement), be sure to read the precautionary notices in «SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM»(ref-229383) .

- INSPECT STEERING WHEEL OFF CENTER Apply masking tape on the top center of the steering wheel and steering column upper cover. Drive the vehicle in a straight line for 100 meters at a constant speed of 35 mph (56 km/h), and hold the steering wheel to maintain the course. Draw a line on the masking tape as shown in the illustration. Turn the steering wheel to its straight position. HINT: Refer to the upper surface of the steering wheel, steering spoke and SRS airbag line for the straight position. Draw a new line on the masking tape of the steering wheel (Scheme 156) Measure the distance between the 2 lines on the masking tape of the steering wheel. Convert the measured distance to steering angle. Measured distance 1 mm (0.04 in.) = Steering angle approximately 1 degree. HINT: Make a note of the steering angle.
- ADJUST STEERING ANGLE Draw a line on the RH and LH tie rod and rack ends where it can easily be seen (Scheme 157) Using a paper gauge, measure the distance from RH and LH tie rod ends to the rack end screws. HINT: Measure the RH side and LH side. Make a note of the measured values. Remove the RH and LH boot clips from the rack boots. Loosen the RH and LH lock nuts. Turn the RH and LH rack end by the same amount (but in different directions) according to the steering angle. 1 turn 360 degrees of rack end (1.5 mm (0.059 in.) horizontal movement) = 12 degrees of steering angle Tighten the RH and LH lock nuts. Torque: 56 N.m (570 kgf.cm, 41 ft.lbf) NOTE: Make sure that the difference in length between RH and LH tie rod ends and rack end screws are within 1.5 mm (0.059 in.). Install the RH and LH boot clips.

- REMOVE STEERING WHEEL PAD NOTE: If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition switch at ON or ACC, DTCs will be recorded. Place the front wheels facing straight ahead. 2JZ-GE: Remove the steering wheel lower No. 2 and No. 3 covers. 3UZ-FE: Remove the steering wheel No. 2 cover and pad switch modulator cover. Using a torx(R) socket wrench, loosen the 2 torx(R) screws. HINT: Loosen the 2 screws until the groove along the screw circumference catches on the screw case. Pull the wheel pad from the steering wheel and disconnect the airbag connector. CAUTION: When storing the wheel pad, keep the upper surface of the pad facing upward. Never disassemble the wheel pad. NOTE: When removing the wheel pad, take care not to pull the air-bag wire harness.
- REMOVE STEERING WHEEL Disconnect the connector. Remove the steering wheel set nut. Place matchmarks on the steering wheel and main shaft assembly. Using SST, remove the wheel. SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021) REMOVE UPPER AND LOWER COLUMN COVERS Remove the 3 screws, column upper and lower covers. REMOVE COMBINATION SWITCH WITH SPIRAL CABLE Disconnect the 4 connectors. Disconnect the airbag connector. Remove the 3 screws and combination switch with spiral cable. REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE (See «STEERING WHEEL PAD AND SPIRAL CABLE»(ref-229383-S42050963062006041500000) ). NOTE: Do not disassemble the spiral cable or apply oil to it. REMOVE NO. 1 UNDER COVER Remove the 3 screws. Disconnect the DLC3. Disconnect the connectors and remove the No. 1 under cover. REMOVE FINISH PLATE AND END PAD REMOVE NO. 1 SAFETY PAD Remove the 2 screws and disconnect the hood lock release lever from the No. 1 safety pad. Remove 4 pad set bolts and screw and No. 1 safety pad. REMOVE HEATER TO REGISTER DUCT NO. 7 DISCONNECT INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY Place matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and control valve shaft. Loosen the bolt "A" and remove the bolt "B" and disconnect the intermediate shaft assembly. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY Disconnect the connectors. Remove the brake pedal return spring. Loosen the hole cover clamp. Remove the 4 column assembly set nuts and steering column assembly. REMOVE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY Remove the bolt "A" and intermediate shaft assembly. REMOVE DUST COVER 3UZ-FE: REMOVE STEERING PAD SWITCH MODULATOR Remove the 2 screws and steering pad switch modulator.
