TROUBLE SHOOTING

1. Trouble shooting of a automatic headlight and lighting system complaint begins with verification of the customer problem. If problem occurs, go to step 3 . If problem does not occur, go to next step.
2. If problem does not occur, review conditions under which problem occurred for customer and try to duplicate those conditions. For example, if the problem occurs on rainy days or during high humidity conditions, sprinkle water onto vehicle and see if malfunction occurs. DO NOT sprinkle water directly into engine compartment or onto electronic components. Visually inspect for signs of mechanical and electrical damage. Inspect for blown fuses and damaged relays. Inspect for loose or corroded connections, damaged wiring harnesses and/or switches. Check for a broken or partially broken wire inside insulation, which could cause system malfunction but prove good in a continuity/voltage check with system disconnected. Ensure any aftermarket electronic equipment is properly installed. If fault is found, repair as necessary.
3. This system uses the multiplex communication system so, check the diagnosis system of the multiplex communication system. See «MULTIPLEX COMMUNICATION SYSTEM»(ref-152690) article under COMMUNICATION DEVICES in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
4. Determine problem symptom. See «AUTOMATIC HEADLIGHT & LIGHTING PROBLEM SYMPTOMS»(ref-152890-S09850599312003030300000) table.
5. After problem has been identified and repaired, confirm repairs. After repairs have been completed, confirm that problem has been eliminated. Operate system under same conditions recorded for original complaint. If problem is no longer present, repair has corrected problem. If problem is still present, further diagnosis and repair is required.

AUTOMATIC HEADLIGHT & LIGHTING PROBLEM SYMPTOMS

LIGHT-OFF CONDITION INSPECTION

1. Turn the ignition switch ON.
2. Lights auto ON: gradually cover the top of the sensor.
3. Check that the lights go off under the following conditions. Light control switch is OFF. The area surrounding the sensor gets bright. The driver's door is opened with the ignition switch OFF.

LIGHT-ON CONDITION INSPECTION

1. Open the driver's door while the ignition switch is OFF.
2. Turn the light control switch to AUTO leaving the door open and cover the top of the sensor and verify that the lights go on when the ignition switch is turned ON.

Circuit Description

The door courtesy switch goes on when the door is opened and goes off when the door is closed. For driver door circuit (Scheme 10) For passenger door circuit (Scheme 11)

Inspection Procedure

1. Check that the door courtesy light comes on when the door is opened and goes off when the door is closed. If the operation is normal, perform the next test procedure of the problem symptom. On remote keyless entry system, check any of the door ECUs. See PIN VOLTAGES under «POWER DOOR LOCKS, TRUNK LID & FUEL DOOR RELEASE»(ref-152941) article under DOOR LOCKS & ANTI-THEFT SYSTEMS in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. On anti-theft system, check the door unlock detection switch circuit. See DOOR UNLOCK DETECTION SWITCH CIRCUIT (FRONT) under CIRCUIT TESTS under «POWER DOOR LOCKS, TRUNK LID & FUEL DOOR RELEASE»(ref-152941) article under DOOR LOCKS & ANTI-THEFT SYSTEMS in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
2. Check the courtesy light. See «DOOR COURTESY LIGHT»(ref-152890-S05537937812003030400000) under COMPONENT TESTS. If the light is OK, go to the next step. If the light is not good, replace the courtesy light.
3. Check the courtesy switch. See «DOOR COURTESY SWITCH (FRONT)»(ref-152890-S17990569272003030400000) under COMPONENT TESTS. If the switch is OK, go to the next step. If the switch is not good, replace the courtesy switch.
4. Check the wire harness and connector between the courtesy light and door ECU (driver or passenger), courtesy switch and door ECU (driver or passenger). See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152890-S17699007262003030300000) . If the results are OK, the circuit is OK. Further diagnosis is needed. On remote keyless entry system, check any of the door ECUs. See PIN VOLTAGES under «POWER DOOR LOCKS, TRUNK LID & FUEL DOOR RELEASE»(ref-152941) article under DOOR LOCKS & ANTI-THEFT SYSTEMS in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. On anti-theft system, check the door unlock detection switch circuit.
