Removal

Remove transmission, clutch assembly (if equipped) and flywheel/drive plate. Using a knife, cut off seal lip. Carefully pry oil seal from rear oil seal housing. Use care not to damage sealing surfaces.

Installation

  1. Ensure all sealing surfaces are clean. Apply grease to seal lip of NEW oil seal. Using Oil Seal Installer (SST 09223-15030) and Handle (SST 09951-07100), install oil seal in rear oil seal housing until oil seal is even with housing surface.
  2. Apply Loctite to flywheel/drive plate bolts. Install and tighten flywheel/drive plate bolts to specification in a crisscross pattern. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-49511-S27767008102001011500000) . To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure.

HINT

Removal of the thermostat would have an adverse effect, causing a lowering of cooling efficiency. Do not remove the thermostat, even if the engine tends to overheat

Scheme 27: Removal
  1. Drain engine coolant
  2. Disconnect water inlet from water pump, and remove thermostat. Remove the 2 nuts holding the water inlet to the water pump, and disconnect the water inlet from the water pump. Remove the thermostat. Remove the gasket from the thermostat.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove radiator. Remove timing belt and idler pulley. See «TIMING BELT»(ref-49511-S17009621392001011500000). Remove distributor to access water pump (if necessary). Remove thermostat housing, gasket and thermostat from water pump.
  2. Remove coolant by-pass outlet, coolant by-pass pipe and "O" rings. see scheme 12 Remove bolt, and disconnect engine wiring from bracket located near top of water pump.
  3. Remove bolts, and separate generator from water pump. Remove nuts, and disconnect coolant pipe from rear of water pump. Remove bolts, water pump, gasket and "O" ring.
  1. Install NEW gasket, NEW "O" ring and water pump on cylinder block. DO NOT install coolant pipe nuts on rear of water pump at this time.
  2. Install water pump bolts. Ensure correct bolt is installed in specified location. see scheme 30 Hand-tighten water pump bolts "A" first, and then tighten all bolts to specification. see scheme 30 See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-49511-S27767008102001011500000).
  3. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Ensure jiggle valve on thermostat aligns with protrusion on thermostat housing. see scheme 31 Tighten fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-49511-S27767008102001011500000). Fill cooling system.
