REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

WARNINGTo avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and carefully follow all SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM procedures in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article in ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT SECTION.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove shift lever knob. Remove upper console panel. With ashtray closed, remove ashtray trim panel. Remove center air register. Remove radio and A/C control together as an assembly. Separate radio from A/C control assembly. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove instrument panel. See INSTRUMENT PANEL . Remove heater-to-No. 2 air duct. Unplug servomotor connector. Remove wiper relay and power steering electronic control module. Remove servomotor. To install, reverse removal procedure.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Set air inlet mode to fresh position. Remove lower dashboard panel from right side of instrument panel. Remove front passenger door scuff plate.
  2. Pry out clips and pull back cowl side portion of floor carpet. Remove blower motor relay from blower motor unit. (Scheme 19) Remove blower motor cover. Remove blower motor. To install, reverse removal procedure.

  1. If compressor runs, idle engine for 10 minutes with A/C on. Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable. Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Remove battery and tray. Remove drive belt.
  2. Remove power steering pump. Unplug compressor connector. Disconnect and cap refrigerant hoses from compressor. Raise and support vehicle. Remove lower engine splash shield. Remove compressor bolts and compressor.
  3. To install, reverse removal procedure. Evacuate and recharge system. Inspect system for leaks.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Discharge A/C system, using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Disconnect and plug refrigerant lines from evaporator. Remove lower panel from right side of instrument panel. Remove glove box door.
  2. Remove glove box reinforcement. Remove front passenger-side door scuff plate. Remove heater air duct guide. Remove engine control module cover. Remove A/C amplifier. Unplug wiring harness. Remove cooling unit.
  3. Disassemble cooling unit. Replace components as necessary. (Scheme 20) To install, reverse removal procedure. Evacuate and recharge system. Inspect system for leaks.

Remove evaporator. See COOLING UNIT . Remove equalizer tubes. Remove expansion valve. To install, reverse removal procedure.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. Remove cooling unit. See «COOLING UNIT»(ref-36446-S34811460732001010900000). Disconnect coolant hoses. Remove heater control valve. Remove EGR pipe. Disconnect coolant hoses from heater unit. Remove both front seats.
  2. Remove instrument panel, console box duct, instrument panel braces, and reinforcement. See «INSTRUMENT PANEL»(ref-36446-S42697048352001010900000). Remove heater ducts from passenger and driver floor area. Remove heater-to-register No. 3 center air duct.
  3. Remove wiring harness. Remove heater unit. Disassemble heater unit. Replace components as necessary. (Scheme 21) To install, reverse removal procedure. Refill cooling system. Start and warm engine to operating temperature. Inspect system for leaks.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove instrument panel. See INSTRUMENT PANEL . Remove in-vehicle temperature sensor. To install, reverse removal procedure.

Removal

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disable air bag system. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article in ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT SECTION. Remove front and rear door scuff plates. (Scheme 22)
  2. Remove center trim panel and seat belt shoulder anchors from center pillar. Remove both front seat belt retractors, located in center pillar. Remove seat track covers. Remove both front seats.
  3. Remove roof side inner trim panels and front pillar trim panels. Remove steering wheel pad (driver-side air bag module). Remove steering wheel nut. Mark steering wheel and shaft for reassembly reference. Remove steering wheel.
  4. Remove upper and lower steering column covers. Remove instrument cluster finish panel. Remove both undercover panels. Remove end pads. Remove knee bolster. Remove No. 2 air duct. Remove combination switch. Remove instrument cluster. Open glove box door. Remove finish plate from glove box interior.
  5. Unplug passenger-side air bag connector. Remove glove box door. Remove passenger-side air bag module. Remove No. 3 air register. Remove front ashtray. Remove radio together with A/C control as an assembly. Remove shift knob. Remove console upper panel and register. Remove center console box and mounting brackets.
  6. Remove center console air ducts. Remove side defroster nozzles. Remove heater air guide. Unplug all wiring harness connectors. Disconnect hoses as necessary. Remove nut and antenna cable bracket.
  7. Remove bolts, screws, nut, and instrument panel. Remove heater-to-air register. Remove steering column. Remove lower mounting bracket, instrument panel braces, and instrument panel reinforcement.

Installation

To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten steering wheel pad Torx screws and steering wheel hub nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Activate air bag system. Verify air bag system is functioning properly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK in appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article in ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT SECTION.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove heater unit. See HEATER UNIT . Unplug sensor connector. Remove sensor from heater unit. To install, reverse removal procedure.
