PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH
- Inspect PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION (PNP) switch assembly using the following steps: Apply the parking brake and turn the ignition switch to ON. Depress the brake pedal and check that the engine starts only when the shift lever is set in "N" or "P" position. Check that the back-up light is lit and the reverse warning buzzer sounds only when the shift lever is set in "R" position. If a failure is found, check the PNP switch for continuity. See appropriate DIAGNOSIS article.
- Adjust PNP switch assembly using the following steps: Loosen the 2 bolts of PNP switch and set shift lever to the "N" position. Align the groove and neutral basic line. (Scheme 103) Hold the switch in position and tighten 2 bolts to 44 INCH lbs. (5.0 N.m). After adjustment, perform inspection as described in previous step.

SHIFT CABLE
- Inspect shift lever position using the following steps: When shifting from "P" to "R" position only with ignition switch ON and brake pedal depressed, make sure that the shifting lever moves smoothly and can be moderately operated. When starting engine, make sure that the vehicle moves forward when shifting from "N" to "D" position and moves rearward when shifting to "R" position.
- Adjust shift lever position using the following steps: Loosen nut on shift lever. (Scheme 104) Push shift lever fully downward. Return shift lever 2 notches to "N" position. (Scheme 105) Set shift lever to "N" position. While holding shift lever lightly toward the "R" position side, tighten the lever nut to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156107-S16841401952003070700000). Start engine and make sure that vehicle moves forward when shifting lever from "N" to "D" position and moves rearward when shifting it to "R" position.
