BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM
| CAUTION | Wash off brake fluid immediately if it comes into contact with a painted surface. |
Note. If any work is done on the brake system or if air in the brake lines is suspected, bleed the air from the system. When bleeding, keep the amount of fluid within the line of the reservoir between Min. and Max. Use only SAE J1703 or FMVSS No. 116 DOT 3 brake fluid.
Note. If the master cylinder has been disassembled or if the reservoir becomes empty, bleed the air from the master cylinder. See MASTER CYLINDER .
BRAKE LINE
- Fill reservoir with brake fluid.
- Connect a vinyl tube to the brake caliper and place the other end in a clear jar.
- Depress the brake pedal several times, then loosen the bleeder plug with the pedal held down.
- At the point when fluid stops coming out, tighten the bleeder plug to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-153071-S04812338842003031200000) .
- Release the brake pedal. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until all the air in the fluid has been bled out.
- Repeat procedure to bleed air out of the brake line for each wheel.
MASTER CYLINDER
Note. If the master cylinder has been disassembled or if the reservoir becomes empty, bleed the air from the master cylinder.
- Remove air cleaner assembly with hose.
- Disconnect brake lines from master cylinder with special tool (09023-00100).
- Slowly depress brake pedal and hold it.
- Block off outer holes with your fingers and release the brake pedal.
- Repeat 3 and 4 several times.
- Connect brake lines and install air cleaner assembly with hose. Bleed brake lines. See «BRAKE LINE»(ref-153071-S19250629612003031200000) .
- Check fluid level in reservoir and add fluid if necessary.
PRE-CHECK
- Release parking brake pedal.
- When ignition switch is turned to ON, check that ABS warning light and BRAKE warning light illuminate for 3 seconds. When parking brake is applied or level of brake fluid is low, BRAKE warning light is illuminated.
- If indicator check result is not normal, see appropriate test under «SYMPTOM TESTING»(ref-153071-S17471266342003031200000) .
RETRIEVING CODES
Note. When ABS warning light is illuminated constantly, LEXUS hand-held tester cannot be used.
With Hand-Held Tester
- Connect LEXUS hand-held tester to the (DLC3). (Scheme 50) Turn ignition switch to ON. Please refer to the hand-held tester operator's manual for further details.
- Read DTCs by following prompts on tester screen. If any ABS related DTCs are retrieved, perform appropriate test. See «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS»(ref-153071-S41144349162003031800000).

Without Hand-Held Tester
- Using special tool (09843-18040), jumper between terminals Tc and CG of (DLC3). (Scheme 51)
- Turn the ignition switch to ON. If any DTCs are stored, ABS warning light will flash code on the combination meter. To read flashing patterns for normal and codes 11 and 21 (Scheme 52)
- If any ABS related DTCs are returned, perform appropriate test. See «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS»(ref-153071-S41144349162003031800000).
- If 2 or more malfunctions are indicated at the same time the lowest numbered DTC will be displayed first.
- If a code does not appear, inspect the diagnostic circuit or ABS warning light circuit. See «TEST B»(ref-153071-S24950639902003031900000) or «TEST C»(ref-153071-S12822340432003031900000) under SYMPTOM TESTING.

CLEARING CODES
Note. Disconnecting the battery cable during repairs will not erase DTCs stored in ABS/TRAC ECU.
Note. When the ABS warning light is illuminated constantly the hand-held tester cannot be used.
- Connect hand-held tester to (DLC3). (Scheme 50)
- Turn ignition switch to ON.
- Operate hand-held tester to erase DTCs. Please refer to hand-held tester operator's manual for further details.
- Using special tool (09843-18040), Jumper between terminals Tc and CG of (DLC3). (Scheme 51)
- Turn the ignition switch to ON. Depress brake pedal 8 or more times within 5 seconds.
- Check that ABS warning light flashes normal code. (Scheme 52)
- Remove special tool from the DLC3.
Active List
Note. Performing ACTIVE TEST using hand-held tester, allows the relay, VSV, actuator and so on to operate without parts removal. Performing ACTIVE TEST as a first step of troubleshooting is one method to shorten labor time. It is possible to display the DATA LIST during the ACTIVE TEST. (Scheme 54)
- Connect hand-held tester to the DLC3. (Scheme 50)
- Turn ignition switch to ON.
- According to display on tester, read ACTIVE TEST. (Scheme 53)

Data List
Note. According to the DATA LIST displayed by hand-held tester, you can read the value of the switch, sensor, actuator and so on without parts removal. Reading the DATA LIST as a first step of troubleshooting is one method to shorten labor time.
- Connect hand-held tester to the DLC3. (Scheme 50)

Freeze Frame Data
The vehicle (sensor) status at time of malfunction, and during ABS operation can be memorized and displayed using hand-held tester. Only one record of freeze frame data is stored. However, freeze frame data during ABS operation is constantly updated. After storage of freeze frame data, up to 31 ignition ON operations are stored and displayed. If ignition switch ON operation exceeds 31 times, "31" appears on the display. (Scheme 55)

- DTC C0200/31 - Right Front Speed Sensor Circuit

- DTC C1236/36 - Foreign Matter Is Attached On Tip Of Left Front Sensor
SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL CHECK
Note. If the ignition switch is turned from ON to ACC or LOCK position during test mode, DTC of sensor check function will be erased. During test mode, ECU records any DTC set during sensor check function. By performing sensor signal check, the codes are erased if normal operation is confirmed. Any DTCs still stored are the DTCs where malfunction was found.
Note. When ABS warning light is always on hand-held tester cannot be used.
- Start engine and check that ABS warning light flashes. If ABS warning light does not flash, inspect ABS warning light circuit and Ts circuit. See «TEST B»(ref-153071-S24950639902003031900000) , «TEST C»(ref-153071-S12822340432003031900000) and «TEST F»(ref-153071-S13854459512003031900000) under SYSTEM TESTING.
- Drive vehicle straight forward and 28 mph or more for several seconds.
- Stop vehicle. Using hand-held tester, retrieve any ABS related DTCs by following prompts on the tester screen. Refer to the hand-held tester operator's manual for further details. If any DTCs are retrieved, perform appropriate test. See «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS»(ref-153071-S41144349162003031800000) .
Without Hand-Held Sensor
- Turn ignition switch to ON.
- Using special tool (09843-18040), jumper between terminals Tc and CG of (DLC3). (Scheme 51)
- Start engine and check that ABS warning light flashes. If ABS warning light does not flash, inspect ABS warning light circuit and Ts circuit. See «TEST B»(ref-153071-S24950639902003031900000), «TEST C»(ref-153071-S12822340432003031900000) and «TEST F»(ref-153071-S13854459512003031900000) under SYSTEM TESTING.
- Drive vehicle straight forward faster than 28 mph for several seconds.
- Stop vehicle. Read flashes of the ABS warning light to retrieve DTCs. If any DTCs are retrieved, perform appropriate test. See «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS»(ref-153071-S41144349162003031800000).
- If 2 or more malfunctions are indicated at the same time, the lowest numbered DTC will be displayed.
- After performing check, turn ignition switch off and remove special tool from (DLC3).
WHEEL SPEED SENSOR (REAR)
| CAUTION | Replace the axle hub assembly if it is dropped or a strong shock is given to it. Also replace it if damage is caused to the sensor rotor. Do not scratch the contacting surface of axle hub and speed sensor. |
