Scheme 10: Removal
  1. Release fuel pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE»(ref-48920-S16516306122001011500000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Ensure battery negative cable is disconnected. Drain cooling system and engine oil. Remove hood, battery and battery tray. Remove radiator, coolant reservoir tank and windshield washer fluid reservoir.
  2. Disconnect accelerator cable from throttle body. On A/T models, disconnect throttle valve cable at throttle body. On all models, remove air cleaner cap and airflow meter with air cleaner hose. Remove air filter and air cleaner case.
  3. Remove cruise control actuator and bracket. Remove relay box from left front corner of engine compartment and disconnect 3 electrical connectors. Disconnect electrical connections at ignitor, ignition coil and noise filter near left strut tower.
  4. Remove engine check connector and ground strap near right strut tower. Engine check connector is located in front of wiper motor, on the right strut tower. Disconnect necessary coolant hoses and fuel lines.
  5. On M/T models, remove starter motor. Remove clutch release cylinder with hose attached and secure aside. On all models, disconnect electrical connections and control cables from transaxle.
  6. Disconnect necessary vacuum hoses and electrical connections from the engine. Remove glove box. Disconnect necessary electrical connections so engine wiring can be pulled out through firewall. (Scheme 10) Remove retaining nuts and pull engine wiring through firewall.
  7. Remove A/C compressor with hoses attached and secure aside (if equipped). Remove power steering pump with hoses attached and secure aside. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front exhaust pipe that fits between exhaust manifolds and catalytic converter.
  8. Using Wrench (SST 09631-22020), disconnect pressure hose from hydraulic cooling fan pump. Remove fender apron from inside fenderwell for axle shaft removal.
  9. Remove front wheels. Remove cotter pin and retainer from end of axle shaft. Apply brakes and remove axle shaft nut. Drain transaxle fluid. Remove nut and separate tie rod from steering knuckle.
  10. Remove nut and separate stabilizer bar link from lower control arm. Remove ball joint-to-lower control arm bolts/nuts. Separate lower control arm from ball joint.
  11. Cover axle shaft boot with shop towel. Using soft-faced hammer, tap axle shaft from hub assembly. Push hub assembly outward and separate axle shaft from hub assembly.
  12. To remove left axle shaft, pry axle shaft from transaxle and remove. (Scheme 11) To remove right axle shaft, remove axle shaft bearing retaining bolt. Remove snap ring and axle shaft. (Scheme 11)
  13. Support engine with hoist. Remove rear engine mount-to-crossmember nuts. Remove engine mount bolts. Remove retaining bolts and engine mount absorber. Remove engine stabilizer rod located near timing belt cover. Lift engine and transaxle from vehicle.

Installation

  1. To install, reverse removal procedure. If installing right engine mount braces, tighten bolts to specification. (Scheme 12) Install engine and tighten mount bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-48920-S04400208702001011500000) table. Tighten engine stabilizer rod bolts to specification in sequence. (Scheme 12)
  2. Install NEW snap ring on end of axle shaft. Coat axle shaft splines and sliding surfaces with gear oil. Install axle shafts in transaxle with opening of snap ring facing downward.
  3. Ensure left axle shaft will move inward and outward approximately.080-.120" (2.03-3.05 mm) after being installed. Ensure axle shaft cannot be pulled from transaxle.
  4. When installing right axle shaft, install NEW snap and NEW axle shaft bearing retaining bolt. Tighten axle shaft bearing retaining bolt to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-48920-S04400208702001011500000) table.
  5. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Tighten fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-48920-S04400208702001011500000) table. Adjust fluid levels and control cables.
