Note. For reassembly reference, label all electrical connectors, vacuum hoses and fuel lines before removing. Also place mating marks on engine hood and other major assemblies before removing.
Removal
- Disconnect cable from negative battery terminal and wait a minimum of 20 seconds. Remove hood. Disconnect ground strap and remove battery. Remove engine splash shields. Drain engine coolant and engine oil. Remove suspension upper brace. Remove ignition coil, igniter and bracket assembly.
- Remove radiator and alternator. Remove radiator reservoir tank. Disconnect accelerator cable from throttle body. On A/T vehicles, disconnect throttle cable from throttle body. Disconnect cruise control actuator vacuum hoses and actuator connector. Remove actuator and bracket.
- Disconnect vacuum pump connector. Remove vacuum pump and bracket. Remove air cleaner assembly. Disconnect airflow meter connector, ISC valve air hose and vacuum pipe air hose. Remove air cleaner and air flow meter assembly.
- Disconnect check connector. Disconnect relay connectors and ground straps from left hand fender apron. Disconnect brake booster vacuum hose, A/C control valve vacuum hoses and charcoal canister vacuum hose from air intake chamber. Disconnect ground strap from transaxle. Disconnect heater hoses and fuel lines.
- On M/T vehicles, remove starter, clutch release cylinder and tubing clamp. On all vehicles, disconnect speedometer cable and transaxle control cable(s). Disconnect 3 engine ECU connectors located under dash. Disconnect relay, cowl and instrument panel connectors. Pull engine wiring harness through engine cowl panel, into engine compartment.
- Remove suspension lower crossmember. Remove front exhaust pipe. Remove A/C compressor without disconnecting hoses. Put compressor aside and suspend it from radiator support. Remove drive shafts. Remove power steering pump without disconnecting hoses. Put pump aside and suspend it from cowl. Remove center crossmember.
- Remove front engine mount and bracket. Remove center and rear engine mount and bracket. Remove power steering oil reservoir tank without disconnecting hoses. Disconnect ground strap attached to reservoir mounting bolt.
- Remove Right Hand (RH) and Left Hand (LH) engine mounting stays. Attach engine chain hoist to engine hangers and support weight of engine assembly. Remove clamp bolts of power steering oil cooler pipes. Remove RH and LH engine mounts.
- Ensure engine is clear of all wiring, hoses and cables. Lift engine slowly and carefully out of vehicle. Ensure power steering housing and neutral start switch are not damaged. With engine and transaxle assembly removed from vehicle, remove starter from A/T vehicles. Separate engine and transaxle.
Installation
Assemble engine and transaxle. On A/T vehicles, install starter before installing transaxle and engine assembly. Attach hoist and tilt transaxle downward to clear left side engine mount. Lower engine into engine compartment. Level engine and install engine mounts. To complete installation, reverse removal procedures. After installation is completed, check and adjust engine drive belts and ignition timing.
