Engine Controls - Self-Diagnostics - Introduction: Other Kia Sephia II

MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT

Note. Loose fuel cap will cause MIL to illuminate.

Also called CHECK ENGINE light. MIL comes on when ignition is turned on. MIL remains on for several seconds after engine has started, then goes out. If ECM detects emission related component or systems deterioration or failure, MIL will illuminate and Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is stored in memory. MIL will stay on until DTC is erased with scan tool or battery is disconnected for at least 20 seconds. If misfire severe enough to cause catalytic converter damage occurs, MIL will continuously flash on and off and DTC will be stored. When danger to catalytic converter passes, MIL will remain steadily on until DTC is cleared.

AFTER-REPAIR PROCEDURE

After repair, clear codes. See CLEARING CODES . Verify repairs by driving vehicle with scan tool connected to OBD-II DLC and monitoring for pending codes.

READINESS DRIVE CYCLE

Note. Perform Readiness Drive Cycle when directed to from diagnostic tests. Readiness drive cycle provides conditions for EVAP monitor to run, so that repairs for DTC P0440 or DTC P0442 may be verified.

Before running Readiness Drive Cycle

  1. Vehicle must have been out of direct sunlight for a minimum of 30 minutes.
  2. ECT must be below 150° F (66° C).
  3. Put vehicle on lift with wheels a minimum of 4" off the ground.

Connect Kia Data Pro scan tool to OBD-II connector. Turn ignition on. Turn scan tool on and go to readiness test screen. To run test

  1. Start vehicle and idle in neutral (M/T) or park (A/T) for minimum 5 minutes.
  2. Put vehicle in gear and accelerate to 50-65 MPH.
  3. With manual transmission in 5th gear, or automatic transmission in overdrive, hold speed at steady 50-65 MPH for 3 minutes.
  4. Decelerate to 35-45 MPH.
  5. Hold speed at steady 35-45 MPH for 4 minutes. (Do NOT downshift.)
  6. Decelerate to idle.
  7. Apply brakes and put into neutral (M/T) or park (A/T) and let idle for one minute.
  8. Increase engine to about 3000 RPM for 5 seconds.
  9. Let engine idle until EVAP test shows complete.

After scan tool shows EVAP test is complete, go to non-continuous tests screen and verify EVAP test has passed.

SUMMARY

If no fault codes are present, driveability symptoms exist, or intermittent codes exist, proceed to TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article for diagnosis by symptom (i.e., ROUGH IDLE, NO START, etc.) or intermittent diagnostic procedures.
