BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM
| CAUTION | Brake fluid will damage painted surfaces. If brake fluid is spilled on painted surface, wipe off immediately and clean with alcohol. Use only DOT 3 brake fluid from a sealed container. DO NOT mix brake fluid with any other type. |
BLEEDING PROCEDURE
Note. For bleeding ABS brake system, see ANTI-LOCK article.
Scheme 3
- Ensure master cylinder is clean of dirt, moisture or any other type of contaminates that may enter master cylinder reservoir. Fill reservoir with clean brake fluid. If master cylinder is suspected of having air, it must be bled first. With the help of an assistant, loosen both brake lines at master cylinder and have brake pedal depressed and held down while brake lines are tightened. Repeat as necessary until no air in fluid is detected.
- Install clear vinyl bleeder hose onto furthest bleeder valve from master cylinder. Place other end of hose in clean transparent container. Partially fill container with clean brake fluid so end of hose is submerged in fluid. Open bleeder valve 1-2 turns. Have an assistant slowly depress brake pedal through its full travel. (Scheme 3)
- Close bleeder valve and release pedal. Pump pedal several times to push air toward wheel cylinders. Repeat procedure until flow of brake fluid is clear and shows no sign of air bubbles. Proceed to next bleeder valve. Check brake pedal for firmness. If brake pedal feels "spongy", repeat bleeding procedure. Top off master cylinder reservoir.
PARKING BRAKE
- Depress brake pedal several times while vehicle is moving in reverse to ensure rear brakes are properly adjusted. Pull parking brake lever with a force of 22 lbs. (10 kg). If stroke is 6-8 notches, parking brake is properly adjusted.
- If stroke is not 6-8 notches, raise and support rear of vehicle. Release parking brake lever. Remove rear wheels and drums, and inspect rear brakes. Replace if worn to minimum brake lining thickness. See DRUM BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS . If rear brakes are in good condition, install drums and wheels. Pull parking brake 2-3 notches and adjust rear brakes until rear wheels drag. Release parking brake and ensure rear wheels spin without brake drag.
- On disc brake models, remove plug at bottom of backing plates and turn manual adjuster of each wheel until each rear wheel just begins to drag. Pull parking brake lever. Lever stoke should be 6-8 notches. If rear parking brakes are adjusted properly, go to next step.
- On all models, if rear brakes are adjusted properly but parking brake lever travel is excessive, adjust parking brake cable. Remove parking brake lever cover. Remove adjusting nut clip. Rotate adjusting nut until stroke is 6-8 notches. Operate parking brake several times and ensure rear brakes do not drag. Ensure parking brake warning light illuminates when brake lever is pulled one notch.
BRAKE PEDAL FREE PLAY
- With engine off, depress pedal a few times to eliminate vacuum. Depress brake pedal by hand and check pedal free play. Free play should be.16-.28" (4-7 mm). If free play is as specified, no adjustment is necessary.
- If free play is not as specified, loosen push rod lock nut. (Scheme 4) Rotate push rod until correct free play is obtained. Tighten push rod lock nut.
Scheme 4
BRAKE PEDAL HEIGHT & BRAKELIGHT SWITCH
- Measure brake pedal height from upper center pedal pad-to-carpet. Pedal height should be 7.60-7.72" (193-196 mm). (Scheme 4) If pedal height is as specified, no adjustment is necessary.
- If pedal height is not as specified, disconnect brakelight switch connector. Loosen brakelight switch lock nut. Turn brakelight switch until switch plunger does not contact pedal. Loosen brake master cylinder push rod lock nut.
- Turn brake master cylinder push rod until pedal height is 7.60-7.72" (193-196 mm). Tighten brakelight switch until plunger contacts pedal and then rotate switch an additional 1/2 turn. Tighten both lock nuts. Reconnect brakelight switch connector. Check brakelight operation.
BRAKE PEDAL TO FLOOR CLEARANCE
- Depress brake pedal with a force of 132 lbs. (59 kg). Measure distance between upper center pedal pad-to-carpet. Clearance should be 2.76" (70.1 mm). (Scheme 4)
- If clearance is not as specified, check for air in brake hydraulic system, rear brake automatic adjuster malfunction or worn brake shoes/pads. Replace components as necessary.
PROPORTIONING VALVE
- Connect 2 pressure gauges to proportioning valve. One to input port of proportioning valve and other to output port of proportioning valve. Bleed brake system. See BLEEDING BRAKE SYSTEM .
- Depress brake pedal until pressure gauge reads as specified and check output pressure. See PROPORTIONING VALVE PRESSURE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Depress brake pedal again, applying additional pressure. Recheck output pressure. See PROPORTIONING VALVE PRESSURE SPECIFICATIONS . If output pressure is not as specified, replace valve.
| Inlet Pressure psi (kg/cm 2 ) | (1) Outlet Pressure psi (kg/cm 2 ) |
|---|---|
| 356 (25) | 356 (25) |
| 641 (45) | 441 (31) |
| 1424 (100) | 669 (47) |

POWER BRAKE BOOSTER
- With engine off, depress brake pedal several times. Press and hold brake pedal and start engine. If brake pedal moves down slightly immediately after engine starts, power brake booster is operating as designed. If brake pedal does not move as specified, go to next step.
- Run engine for 1-2 minutes. Stop engine. Press brake pedal several times and note if first pedal stroke is longer than subsequent strokes. If first pedal stroke is longer than subsequent strokes, power brake booster is operating as designed. If length of strokes is equal, test check valve and vacuum hose between vacuum source and power brake booster. Repair as necessary, and go to next step.
- Start engine. Press and hold brake pedal. Stop engine. Hold pedal down for about 30 seconds. If pedal height remains at same height, power brake booster is operating as designed. If pedal height recedes, test check valve and vacuum hose between vacuum source and power brake booster. Repair as necessary.
