ENGINE MECHANICAL

Note. Before performing any on-vehicle adjustments to fuel or ignition systems, ensure engine mechanical condition is okay.

VALVE CLEARANCE

Note. All engines use hydraulic valve lash adjusters. No adjustments are required.

IGNITION TIMING

  1. Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature. Turn off all accessories. Connect inductive timing light to No. 1 spark plug wire. Start engine and allow it to idle. Connect a jumper wire between terminals GND and ENG TEST of Data Link Connector (DLC). Check ignition timing. Timing mark on crankshaft pulley and mark on timing belt cover should be aligned to specification. Refer to «BASE IGNITION TIMING»(ref-25084-S41691366362001010500000) .
  2. If timing is not within specification, loosen distributor hold-down bolts and rotate distributor base to adjust. Recheck timing and tighten distributor hold-down bolts to 14-19 ft. lbs. (19-26 N.m).

IDLE SPEED

  1. Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature. Turn off all accessories. Connect tachometer to terminal No. 3 of Data Link Connector (DLC). Ensure transaxle is in Park or Neutral and electric cooling fan is off. Start engine and allow it to idle. Connect a jumper wire between terminals GND and ENG TEST of Data Link Connector (DLC). Check idle speed. Idle speed should be 700-800 RPM.
  2. If idle speed is not within specification, adjust idle by turning air adjusting screw located on throttle body. (Scheme 2)

IDLE MIXTURE

Note. Mixture is computer-controlled and is not adjustable.

Air Gap

Measure air gap between crankshaft pulley and crankshaft position sensor using feeler gauge. Air gap should be .020-.059" (.5-1.5 mm). If air gap is not as specified, replace crankshaft pulley or crankshaft position sensor.
