INSTALLATION

Note. Make sure the front wheels are still in the straight ahead position.

Scheme 20

1. Install the column (2) into the vehicle and lift the column up into place. Loosely install the mounting bolts (1), do not tighten at this time.
2. Install the two remaining mounting bolts (1) and tighten all four mounting bolts to 27 N.m (20 ft.lbs.).
3. Connect electrical connectors to tilt and telescope motors, if equipped.
4. Slide the coupler from the lower intermediate shaft (2) onto the upper intermediate shaft (1) and install a new coupler bolt (3). Tighten the coupler bolt to 45 N.m (33 ft. lbs.).
5. Install the reinforcement and opening cover (2). Refer to «INSTALLATION»(/jeep/grand-cherokee/wk2-2010-2013/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#body-interior-exterior) .
6. Install the hush panel (2) and knee blocker, if equipped. Refer to «AIR BAG, KNEE BLOCKER , INSTALLATION»(/jeep/grand-cherokee/wk2-2010-2013/remont/airbag/#restraints-service-information) .
7. Install the steering column module. Refer to «MODULE, STEERING COLUMN , INSTALLATION»(/jeep/grand-cherokee/wk2-2010-2013/remont/communication-devices/#electronic-control-modules-service-information) .
8. Install the steering wheel (2) onto the steering column.
9. Install a new steering wheel mounting bolt (1) and tighten to 80 N.m (59 ft. lbs.).
10. Connect all electrical connectors.
11. Install the drivers airbag. Refer to «AIR BAG, DRIVER , INSTALLATION»(/jeep/grand-cherokee/wk2-2010-2013/remont/airbag/#restraints-service-information) .
12. Connect the negative (ground) cable to the battery.

Note. Specific instructions must be followed when putting the steering column bearing (1) together with the steering column bearing housing (2).

The steering column bearing (1) is contained within the steering column bearing housing (2) which is bolted to the cowl as a seal and steering shaft stabilizer to reduce steering wheel vibration. If the bearing (1) needs serviced the steering column bearing housing (2) must also be replaced. Refer to HOUSING, STEERING COLUMN BEARING , REMOVAL .

The steering column bearing housing (2) is bolted to the cowl as a seal and steering shaft stabilizer to reduce steering wheel vibration. The steering column shaft bearing (1) is contained within the steering column bearing housing (2). If the housing (2) needs serviced the steering column bearing (1) must also be replaced.

Note. Specific instructions must be followed when putting the steering column bearing (1) together with the steering column bearing housing (2).

1. Inhibit rotation of the steering column with adhesive tape/or strap.
2. From the engine compartment, remove the lower intermediate shaft to upper intermediate shaft pinch bolt (3).
3. Separate the lower intermediate shaft coupler (2) from the shaft (1).
4. If equipped, remove the push in retainers (1) and remove the lower panel (2) below the steering column.
5. Remove the pinch bolt (1) from the upper intermediate shaft coupler (2) at the column.
6. Separate the shaft from the column.
7. Tilt the coupler and shaft down just enough to carefully pull the shaft from the steering column shaft bearing and housing at the cowl.
8. Pull back the insulation from the steering column bearing housing (1) as necessary for access and remove the three bolts (2).
9. Using a common hook tool, remove the housing (1) from the cowl panel.

Scheme 25

1. Place the new steering column bearing (1) into the steering column bearing housing (2) and carefully turn clockwise until a click is heard AND the arrow (4) on the bearing and the tab (3) on the housing line up. NOTE: Make sure no insulation is between the housing and the cowl.
2. Position the steering column bearing housing assembly (1) to the cowl, install the three bolts (2) and tighten to 9 N•M (80 in. lbs.).
3. Reposition the insulation as necessary.
4. Apply rose water to the shaft and bushing and carefully install the shaft into the bushing.
5. Install the upper intermediate shaft coupler (2) to the steering column.
6. Install the coupler pinch bolt (1) and tighten to 45 N•m (33 ft. lbs.).
7. If equipped, position the lower panel and install the push in retainers (1).
8. From the engine compartment, install the lower intermediate shaft to upper intermediate shaft pinch bolt (3) and tighten to 45 N•M (33 ft. lbs.).
9. Remove the steering wheel retainer.

1. Remove the steering column from the vehicle. Refer to «COLUMN , REMOVAL»(/jeep/grand-cherokee/wk2-2010-2013/remont/manual-power-steering/#steering-system__removal) .
2. Place steering column on a flat bench, with the tilt motor (2) over the edge.
3. Remove the three bolts (3) that hold the tilt motor to the steering column assembly.
4. Pull the tilt motor (2) away from the steering column assembly and pull off of the flex drive (1).

1. With the steering column on a flat bench, insert the flex drive (1) into the tilt motor (2).
2. Rotate the tilt motor into position and install on the steering column assembly.
3. Install the three bolts (3) to attach the tilt motor (2) to the steering column assembly and tighten to 4 N.m (35 in. lbs.)
4. Install the steering column. Refer to «COLUMN , INSTALLATION»(/jeep/grand-cherokee/wk2-2010-2013/remont/manual-power-steering/#steering-system__installation) .
5. Perform the memory seat module standardization procedure. Refer to «STANDARD PROCEDURE»(/jeep/grand-cherokee/wk2-2010-2013/remont/seats/#memory-seat-module-msmd-electrical-diagnostics) .

1. Remove the pinch bolt (2) from the lower coupling and separate from the steering rack shaft (3).
2. Remove the pinch bolt (3) from the upper coupling (2) and separate from the upper intermediate shaft (1). 1 - INTERMEDIATE SHAFT 2 - MASTER CYLINDER
3. Remove the shaft (1) out from the top by the master cylinder (2).

1. Install the shaft (1) in from the top by the master cylinder (2).
2. Install lower intermediate shaft coupler (2) to upper intermediate shaft (1).
3. Install bolt (3) and tighten to 45 N.m (33 ft. lbs.).
4. Slide lower intermediate shaft coupler onto steering gear pinion shaft (3).
5. Install coupler pinch bolt (2) and tighten to 45 N.m (33 ft. lbs.)

Scheme 29

1. Remove the pinch bolt (3) from the upper coupling (2).
2. Remove the steering column from the vehicle. Refer to «COLUMN , REMOVAL»(/jeep/grand-cherokee/wk2-2010-2013/remont/manual-power-steering/#steering-system__removal) .
3. Remove the coupler pinch bolt (1).
4. Slide the upper intermediate shaft (3) off the splines of the steering column.

1. Slide upper intermediate shaft (3) onto splines of steering wheel assembly (2).
2. Install coupler pinch bolt (1) and tighten to 45 N.m (33 ft. lbs.)
3. Install column in vehicle. Refer to «COLUMN , INSTALLATION»(/jeep/grand-cherokee/wk2-2010-2013/remont/manual-power-steering/#steering-system__installation) .
4. Slide coupler onto upper intermediate shaft (1).
5. Install pinch bolt (3) and tighten to 45 N.m (33 ft. lbs.).

The steering column shroud is serviced with the steering column module. Refer to MODULE, STEERING COLUMN , DESCRIPTION .

1. Position front wheels straight ahead.
2. Disconnect and isolate the negative (ground) cable from the battery.
3. Disable and remove the drivers side airbag. Refer to «AIR BAG, DRIVER , REMOVAL»(/jeep/grand-cherokee/wk2-2010-2013/remont/airbag/#restraints-service-information) .
4. Disconnect all electrical connectors.
5. Remove the steering wheel bolt (1).
6. Remove steering wheel damper, if equipped.
7. Slide the steering wheel (2) off the steering column assembly.

1. Install steering wheel (2) onto the column. NOTE: Do not reuse the old steering wheel bolt (1) (a new bolt must be used) NOTE: Be certain that the steering wheel mounting bolt is tightened to the proper torque specification to ensure proper clockspring operation.
2. Install steering wheel damper, if equipped.
3. Install the new steering wheel bolt (1). Tighten the bolt to 80 N.m (59 ft. lbs.).
4. Reconnect all electrical connectors.
5. Install the drivers side air bag. Refer to «AIR BAG, DRIVER , INSTALLATION»(/jeep/grand-cherokee/wk2-2010-2013/remont/airbag/#restraints-service-information) .
6. Reconnect the negative (ground) cable to the battery.

Scheme 30

A rack and pinion steering gear is made up of two main components, the pinon shaft (1) and the rack (2). The gear cannot be adjusted or internally serviced. If a malfunction or a fluid leak occurs, the gear must be replaced as an assembly.
