ENGINE OIL

WARNINGNew or used engine oil can be irritating to the skin. Avoid prolonged or repeated skin contact with engine oil. Contaminants in used engine oil, caused by internal combustion, can be hazardous to your health. Thoroughly wash exposed skin with soap and water. Do not wash skin with gasoline, diesel fuel, thinner, or solvents, health problems can result. Do not pollute, dispose of used engine oil properly. Contact your government agency for location of collection center in your area.

When service is required, Chrysler Corporation recommends that only Mopar® brand parts, lubricants and chemicals be used. Mopar ® provides the best engineered products for servicing Chrysler Corporation vehicles.

LUBRICANTS BEARING DESIGNATIONS

Only lubricants bearing designations defined by the following organization should be used

  1. Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)
  2. American Petroleum Institute (API)
  3. National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI)
  4. Association des Constructeurs Europ e ens d' Automobiles (European Automobile Manufacturers Association) (ACEA)

Scheme 3

Scheme 3: API CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE SYMBOL

Use an engine oil that is API Certified and Licensed to display the certification mark. Mopar ® provides engine oils that meet or exceed, Material Standard MS-6395 requirement.

Scheme 4

Scheme 4: SAE VISCOSITY

Refer to the engine oil filler cap for the preferred engine oil viscosity grade for each vehicle. SAE viscosity grades are used to specify the correct viscosity oil for an engine. Use only Multi-Viscosity oils. These are specified with a dual SAE viscosity grade which indicates the cold (5W) to hot (20) temperature performance range of the oil.

SYNTHETIC ENGINE OILS

There are a number of engine oils being promoted as either synthetic or semi-synthetic. If you choose to use such a product, use only those oils that are certified by the American Petroleum Institute (API) to display the "Certification Mark" and show SAE viscosity grade recommended for each vehicle. Follow the service schedule that describes your driving type.

ENGINE OIL ADDITIVES/SUPPLEMENTS

The manufacturer does not recommend the addition of any engine oil additives/supplements to the specified engine oil. Engine oil additives/supplements should not be used to enhance engine oil performance. Engine oil additives/supplements should not be used to extend engine oil change intervals. No additive is known to be safe for engine durability and can degrade emission components. Additives can contain undesirable materials that harm the long term durability of engines and emission systems by

  1. Increasing the level of Phosphorus and Sulfur in the engine oil. The API Certified Engine Oils control the Phosphorus and Sulfur contents of the oil to levels that reduce the contamination effect on the vehicle's emission control system.
  2. Altering the viscosity characteristics of the engine oil so that it no longer meets the requirements of the specified viscosity grade.
  3. Creating potential for an undesirable additive compatibility interaction in the engine crankcase. The engine oils contain a performance additive system carefully developed to optimize the oil's performance in the engine. The addition of supplements may cause the oil to thicken prematurely, cause excessive deposit build-up and potentially shorten engine life.

GAS ENGINES

WARNINGAntifreeze is an ethylene glycol based coolant and is harmful if swallowed or inhaled. If swallowed, drink two glasses of water and induce vomiting. If inhaled, move to fresh air area. Seek medical attention immediately. Do not store in open or unmarked containers. Wash skin and clothing thoroughly after coming in contact with ethylene glycol. Keep out of reach of children. Dispose of glycol based coolant properly, contact your government agency for location of collection center in your area. Do not open a cooling system when the engine is at operating temperature or hot under pressure, personal injury can result. Avoid radiator cooling fan when engine compartment related service is performed, personal injury can result.
CAUTIONUse of propylene glycol based coolants is not recommended, as they provide less freeze protection and less boiling protection.

The cooling system is designed around the coolant. The coolant must accept heat from engine metal, in the cylinder head area near the exhaust valves and engine block. Then coolant carries the heat to the radiator where the tube/fin radiator can transfer the heat to the air.

The use of aluminum cylinder blocks, cylinder heads, and water pumps requires special corrosion protection. Mopar® Antifreeze/Coolant, 5 Year/100,000 Mile Formula (MS-9769), or the equivalent ethylene glycol based coolant with hybrid organic corrosion inhibitors (called HOAT, for Hybrid Organic Additive Technology) is recommended. This coolant offers the best engine cooling without corrosion when mixed with 50% Ethylene Glycol and 50% distilled water to obtain a freeze point of -37°C (-35°F). If it loses color or becomes contaminated, drain, flush, and replace with fresh properly mixed coolant solution.

The green coolant MUST NOT BE MIXED with the orange or magenta coolants. When replacing coolant the complete system flush must be performed before using the replacement coolant.

CAUTIONMopar® Antifreeze/Coolant, 5 Year/160,000 km (100,000 Mile) Formula (MS-9769) may not be mixed with any other type of antifreeze. Doing so will reduce the corrosion protection and may result in premature water pump seal failure. If non-HOAT coolant is introduced into the cooling system in an emergency, it should be replaced with the specified coolant as soon as possible.

DIESEL ENGINE

CAUTIONUse of propylene glycol based coolants is not recommended, as they provide less freeze protection and less boiling protection.

The cooling system is designed around the coolant. The coolant must accept heat from engine metal, in the cylinder head area near the exhaust valves and engine block. Then coolant carries the heat to the radiator where the tube/fin radiator can transfer the heat to the air.

The use of aluminum cylinder blocks, cylinder heads, and water pumps requires special corrosion protection. Glysantin G 30-91 Antifreeze/Coolant, 5 Year/150,000 Mile Formula (ASTM D3306), or the equivalent ethylene glycol based coolant. This coolant offers the best engine cooling without corrosion when mixed with 50% coolant and 50% distilled water to obtain a freeze point of -36°C (-34°F). It is dyed purple to distinguish it's unique chemistry from traditional green and yellow silicate coolants. If it loses color or becomes contaminated, drain, flush, and replace with fresh properly mixed coolant solution.

The purple coolant MUST NOT BE MIXED with the orange, green or magenta coolants. When replacing coolant the complete system flush must be performed before using the replacement coolant.

CAUTIONGlysantin G 30-91 Antifreeze/Coolant, 5 Year/150,00 Mile Formula (ASTM D3306) may not be mixed with any other type of antifreeze. Doing so will reduce the corrosion protection and may result in premature water pump seal failure.

FUEL REQUIREMENTS

Your engine is designed to meet all emissions regulations and provide excellent fuel economy and performance when using high quality unleaded gasoline having an octane rating of 87. The use of premium gasoline is not recommended. The use of premium gasoline will provide no benefit over high quality regular gasoline, and in some circumstances may result in poorer performance.

Light spark knock at low engine speeds is not harmful to your engine. However, continued heavy spark knock at high speeds can cause damage and immediate service is required. Engine damage resulting from operation with a heavy spark knock may not be covered by the new vehicle warranty.

Poor quality gasoline can cause problems such as hard starting, stalling and hesitations. If you experience these symptoms, try another brand of gasoline before considering service for the vehicle.

Over 40 auto manufacturers world-wide have issued and endorsed consistent gasoline specifications (the Worldwide Fuel Charter, WWFC) to define fuel properties necessary to deliver enhanced emissions, performance and durability for your vehicle. We recommend the use of gasolines that meet the WWFC specifications if they are available.

REFORMULATED GASOLINE

Many areas of the country require the use of cleaner burning gasoline referred to as "reformulated" gasoline. Reformulated gasoline contain oxygenates, and are specifically blended to reduce vehicle emissions and improve air quality.

We strongly support the use of reformulated gasoline. Properly blended reformulated gasoline will provide excellent performance and durability for the engine and fuel system components.

GASOLINE/OXYGENATE BLENDS

Some fuel suppliers blend unleaded gasoline with oxygenates such as 10% ethanol, MTBE, and ETBE. Oxygenates are required in some areas of the country during the winter months to reduce carbon monoxide emissions. Fuels blended with these oxygenates may be used in your vehicle.

CAUTIONDO NOT use gasoline containing METHANOL. Gasoline containing methanol may damage critical fuel system components.

MMT IN GASOLINE

MMT is a manganese-containing metallic additive that is blended into some gasoline to increase octane. Gasolines blended with MMT provide no performance advantage beyond gasoline of the same octane number without MMT. Gasolines blended with MMT reduce spark plug life and reduce emission system performance in some vehicles. We recommend that gasoline free of MMT be used in your vehicle. The MMT content of gasoline may not be indicated on the gasoline pump; therefore, you should ask your gasoline retailer whether or not his/her gasoline contains MMT.

It is even more important to look for gasoline without MMT in Canada because MMT can be used at levels higher than allowed in the United States. MMT is prohibited in Federal and California reformulated gasoline.

SULFUR IN GASOLINE

If you live in the northeast United States, your vehicle may have been designed to meet California low emission standards with Cleaner-Burning California reformulated gasoline with low sulfur. If such fuels are not available in states adopting California emission standards, your vehicles will operate satisfactorily on fuels meeting federal specifications, but emission control system performance may be adversely affected. Gasoline sold outside of California is permitted to have higher sulfur levels which may affect the performance of the vehicle's catalytic converter. This may cause the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL), Check Engine or Service Engine Soon light to illuminate. We recommend that you try a different brand of unleaded gasoline having lower sulfur to determine if the problem is fuel related prior to returning your vehicle to an authorized dealer for service.

CAUTIONIf the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL), Check Engine or Service Engine Soon light is flashing, immediate service is required; see on-board diagnostics system information.

MATERIALS ADDED TO FUEL

All gasoline sold in the United States and Canada is required to contain effective detergent additives. Use of additional detergents or other additives is not needed under normal conditions.

FUEL SYSTEM CAUTIONS

CAUTIONFollow these guidelines to maintain your vehicle's performance
  1. The use of leaded gas is prohibited by Federal law. Using leaded gasoline can impair engine performance, damage the emission control system, and could result in loss of warranty coverage.
  2. An out-of-tune engine, or certain fuel or ignition malfunctions, can cause the catalytic converter to overheat. If you notice a pungent burning odor or some light smoke, your engine may be out of tune or malfunctioning and may require immediate service. Contact your dealer for service assistance.
  3. When pulling a heavy load or driving a fully loaded vehicle when the humidity is low and the temperature is high, use a premium unleaded fuel to help prevent spark knock. If spark knock persists, lighten the load, or engine piston damage may result.
  4. The use of fuel additives which are now being sold as octane enhancers is not recommended. Most of these products contain high concentrations of methanol. Fuel system damage or vehicle performance problems resulting from the use of such fuels or additives is not the responsibility of Chrysler Corporation and may not be covered under the new vehicle warranty.

Note. Intentional tampering with emissions control systems can result in civil penalties being assessed against you.

A/C REFRIGERANT

The refrigerant used in this air conditioning system is a HydroFluoroCarbon (HFC), type R-134a. Unlike R-12, which is a ChloroFluoroCarbon (CFC), R-134a refrigerant does not contain ozone-depleting chlorine. R-134a refrigerant is a nontoxic, nonflammable, clear and colorless liquefied gas.

CAUTIONR-134a refrigerant is not compatible with R-12 refrigerant in an A/C system. Even a small amount of R-12 refrigerant added to an R-134a refrigerant system will cause A/C compressor failure.

The A/C refrigerant system is filled-for-life at the factory and requires no regular maintenance. Although not required at specific intervals, the charge level should be checked if system performance deteriorates or if a noise or leak is suspected. Refer to Diagnosis and Testing .

STANDARD PROCEDURE - JUMP STARTING

WARNINGReview all safety precautions and warnings in battery/starting/charging information. Do not jump start a frozen battery, personal injury can result. Do not jump start when maintenance free battery indicator dot is yellow or bright color. Do not jump start a vehicle when the battery fluid is below the top of lead plates. Do not allow jumper cable clamps to touch each other when connected to a booster source. Do not use open flame near battery. Remove metallic jewelry worn on hands or wrists to avoid injury by accidental arcing of battery current. When using a high output boosting device, do not allow battery voltage to exceed 16 volts. Refer to instructions provided with device being used.
CAUTIONWhen using another vehicle as a booster, do not allow vehicles to touch. Electrical systems can be damaged on either vehicle.

TO JUMP START A DISABLED VEHICLE

WARNINGTake care to avoid the radiator cooling fan whenever the hood is raised. It can start anytime the ignition switch is on. You can be hurt by the fan.
WARNINGDo not attempt to push or tow your vehicle to get it started. Vehicles equipped with an automatic transaxle cannot be started this way and may be damaged. Unburned fuel could enter the catalytic converter and once the engine has started, ignite and damage the converter and vehicle. If the vehicle has a discharged battery, booster cables may be used to obtain a start from another vehicle. This type of start can be dangerous if done improperly, so follow this procedure carefully.
WARNINGWear eye protection and remove any metal jewelry such as watch bands or bracelets that might make an inadvertent electrical contact. You could be seriously injured.

Scheme 5

Scheme 5
  1. Raise hood on disabled vehicle and visually inspect engine compartment for: Battery cable clamp condition, clean if necessary. Frozen battery. Yellow or white color test indicator, if equipped. Generator drive belt condition and tension. Fuel fumes or leakage, correct if necessary. CAUTION: If the cause of starting problem on disabled vehicle is severe, damage to booster vehicle charging system can result.
  2. Wear eye protection and remove any metal jewelry such as watch bands or bracelets that might make an inadvertent electrical contact.
  3. When boosting from a battery in another vehicle, park that vehicle within booster cable reach but without letting the vehicles touch. Set parking brake, place automatic transaxle in PARK (manual transaxle in NEUTRAL) and turn ignition to OFF for both vehicles.
  4. Turn off the heater, radio and all unnecessary electrical loads.
  5. Remove the air intake duct covering the battery, using the two finger screws on the cover.
  6. Connect one end of a jumper cable to the positive terminal of the booster battery. Connect the other end of the jumper cable to the positive terminal (2) of the discharged battery (1). WARNING: Battery fluid is a corrosive acid solution; do not allow battery fluid to contact eyes, skin or clothing. Don't lean over battery when attaching clamps or allow the clamps to touch each other. If acid splashes in eyes or on skin, flush the contaminated area immediately with large quantities of water. A battery generates hydrogen gas which is flammable and explosive. Keep flame or spark away from the vent holes. Do not use a booster battery or any other booster source with an output that exceeds 12 volts.
  7. Connect the other cable, first to the negative terminal of the booster battery and then to the negative terminal (3) of the discharged battery (1). Make sure you have a good contact.
  8. If the vehicle is equipped with Sentry Key Immobilizer, turn the ignition switch to the ON position for 3 seconds before moving the ignition switch to the START position.
  9. Start the engine in the vehicle that has the booster battery, let the engine idle a few minutes, then start the engine in the vehicle with the discharged battery. CAUTION: Do not crank starter motor on disabled vehicle for more than 15 seconds, starter will overheat and could fail.
  10. Allow battery in disabled vehicle to charge to at least 12.4 volts (75% charge) before attempting to start engine. If engine does not start within 15 seconds, stop cranking engine and allow starter to cool (15 minutes), before cranking again.
  11. When removing the jumper cables, reverse the sequence exactly. Be careful of the moving belts and fan.

Oil Change Indicator System - If Equipped

The Scheduled Maintenance services listed in this information must be done at the times or mileages specified to protect your vehicle warranty and ensure the best vehicle performance and reliability. More frequent maintenance may be needed for vehicles in severe operating conditions, such as dusty areas and very short trip driving. Inspection and service should also be done anytime a malfunction is suspected.

The oil change indicator system will remind you that it is time to take your vehicle in for scheduled maintenance.

On Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) equipped vehicles, "Oil Change Required" will be displayed in the EVIC and a single chime will sound, indicating that an oil change is necessary.

()+ This maintenance is recommended by the manufacturer to the owner, but is not required to maintain emissions warranty.
WARNINGYou can be badly injured working on or around a motor vehicle. Do only service work for which you have the knowledge and the right equipment. If you have any doubt about your ability to perform a service job, take your vehicle to a competent mechanic. Failure to properly inspect and maintain your vehicle could result in a component malfunction and effect vehicle handling and performance. This could cause an accident Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

The Scheduled Maintenance services listed in this manual must be done at the times or mileages specified to protect your vehicle warranty and ensure the best vehicle performance and reliability.

On Non-EVIC equipped vehicles, "Change Oil" will flash in the instrument cluster odometer and a single chime will sound, indicating that an oil change is necessary.

The oil change indicator message will illuminate approximately 7,000 miles (11 200 km) after the most recent oil change was performed. Have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible, within 500 miles (800 km). However, an earlier oil change at 3,000 miles (5,000 km) may be required if the vehicle is operated under "Severe Duty Conditions" later in this information.

Note. The oil change indicator message will not monitor the time since the last oil change. Change your vehicle's oil if it has been six months since your last oil change and even if the oil change indicator message is NOT illuminated. Change your engine oil more often if you drive your vehicle off-road for an extended period of time. Under no circumstances should oil change intervals exceed 7,500 miles (12 000 km) or six months, whichever comes first.

()++ Change the engine oil and engine oil filter at every 3,000 miles (5 000 km) or three months if using your vehicle under any of the following severe duty conditions
  1. Stop and go driving.
  2. Driving in dusty conditions.
  3. Short trips of less than 16 km (10 miles).
  4. Trailer towing.
  5. Taxi, police or delivery service (commercial service).
  6. Off-road or desert operation.

The oil change indicator system reminds you that it is time to take the vehicle in for scheduled maintenance.

On the Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) equipped vehicles "Oil Change Required" displays in the EVIC and a single chime sounds indicating that an oil change is necessary.

On non EVIC equipped vehicles "Change Oil" flashes in the instrument cluster odometer and a single chime sounds indicating that an oil change is necessary.

Based on engine operating conditions the oil change indicator message illuminates. This means that service is required for the vehicle. Have the vehicle serviced as soon as possible, within the next 805 km (500 miles).

Note. Under no circumstances should oil change intervals exceed 15,000 miles (25 000 km) or one year, whichever comes first.

At Each Stop for Fuel

  1. Check the engine oil level and add as required.
  2. Check the windshield washer solvent and add if required.

Once a Month

  1. Check the tire pressure and look for unusual wear or damage.
  2. Inspect the battery and clean and tighten the terminals as required.
  3. Check the fluid levels of the coolant reservoir, brake master cylinder, power steering and transaxle and add as needed.
  4. Check all lights and other electrical items for correct operation.

At Each Oil Change

  1. Change the engine oil filter.
  2. Inspect the exhaust system.
  3. Inspect the brake linings, hoses and calipers.
  4. Inspect the CV joints and suspension components.
  5. Check the coolant level, hoses and clamps.
  6. Inspect the accessory drive belt(s).
CAUTIONFailure to perform the required maintenance items may result in damage to the vehicle. Proper operation of four-wheel drive vehicles depends on tires of equal size, type and circumference on each wheel. Any difference in tire size can cause damage to the transfer case. Tire rotation schedule should be followed to balance tire wear.

STANDARD PROCEDURE - VEHICLE TOWING

A vehicle equipped with SAE approved wheel lift type towing equipment can be used to tow MK vehicles. When towing a 4WD vehicle using a wheel lift towing device, use tow dollies under the opposite end of the vehicle. A vehicle with a flatbed device can also be used to transport a disabled vehicle.

Scheme 6

Scheme 6: SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
CAUTIONThe following safety precautions must be observed when towing a vehicle
  1. Secure loose and protruding parts.
  2. Always use a safety chain system that is independent of the lifting and towing equipment.
  3. Do not allow towing equipment to contact the disabled vehicle's fuel tank.
  4. Do not allow anyone under the disabled vehicle while it is lifted by the towing device.
  5. Do not allow passengers to ride in a vehicle being towed.
  6. Always observe state and local laws regarding towing regulations.
  7. Do not tow a vehicle in a manner that could jeopardize the safety of the operator, pedestrians or other motorists.
  8. Do not attach tow chains, T-hooks, or J-hooks to a bumper, steering linkage, drive shafts or a non-reinforced frame hole.
  9. Do not tow a heavily loaded vehicle. Use a flatbed device to transport a loaded vehicle.

TOWING A DISABLED VEHICLE

With Ignition Key

Automatic And Manual Transaxle

Front-wheel-drive vehicles must have the front wheels elevated; all-wheel-drive vehicles must be hauled on a flatbed truck.

All Transaxles

If the vehicle being towed requires steering, the ignition switch must be in the ACCESSORY position, not in the LOCK position.

Do not attempt to use sling type equipment when towing. When securing vehicle to flat bed truck, do not attach to front or rear suspension components. Damage to your vehicle may result from improper towing.

If it is necessary to use the accessories while being towed (wipers, defrosters, etc.), the key must be in the ON position, not the ACCESSORY position. Make certain the transaxle remains in NEUTRAL.

Without The Ignition Key

Special care must be taken when the vehicle is towed with the ignition in the LOCK position. A dolly should be used under the front wheels if the rear wheels are raised. Proper towing equipment is necessary to prevent damage to the vehicle.

Battery power is required to release the brake/transmission interlock system. There is a removable plug in the right side of the shifter housing that allows you to insert your finger to override the system.

Towing This Vehicle Behind Another Vehicle (Flat Towing With All Four Wheels On The Ground)

CAUTIONDO NOT flat tow this vehicle. Damage to the drivetrain will result.
