Wheel Alignment Specifications & Adjustment Procedures: Adjustments Jeep Cherokee III

Wheel Alignment 1 illustration ~327 words

RIDING HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT

Note. Before performing wheel alignment, perform preliminary visual and mechanical inspection of wheels, tires and suspension components. See PRE-ALIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS in WHEEL ALIGNMENT THEORY & OPERATION article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

Before adjusting alignment, check riding height. Riding height must be checked with vehicle on level floor and tires properly inflated. Bounce vehicle several times and allow suspension to settle. Visually inspect vehicle for signs of abnormal height from front to rear or side to side. Check passenger and luggage compartments for extra heavy items, and remove if present. If riding height difference from side to side is more than 1" (25.4 mm), check all suspension components, and repair or replace as necessary.

CASTER ADJUSTMENT

Note. On 4WD vehicles, shim adjustment will change caster angle and front drive shaft angle. If both angles cannot be adjusted to specification, drive shaft angle has priority and should be adjusted for its specified angle. See DRIVE SHAFTS & UNIVERSAL JOINTS article in DRIVE AXLES.

TOE-IN ADJUSTMENT

Note. If vehicle is equipped with power steering, engine must be running during entire toe adjustment procedure.

  1. If vehicle is equipped with power steering, start engine. Center front wheels straight ahead. Measure toe and compare to specification. See «ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-99090-S25569138712001061600000).
  2. Center steering wheel by counting turns required to hit left and right steering stops. Center steering wheel midway between stops. Loosen drag link adjustment sleeve clamp bolts. (Scheme 1)
  3. Rotate adjustment sleeve to adjust right wheel toe to specification. See «ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-99090-S25569138712001061600000). Position clamp bolts so threaded bolt ends face as shown. (Scheme 1) Tighten drag link adjustment sleeve clamp bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-99090-S24457024742001061600000).
  4. Loosen tie rod adjustment sleeve clamp bolts at each end of tie rod. (Scheme 1) Rotate tie rod adjustment sleeve to adjust left wheel to toe specification. See «ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-99090-S25569138712001061600000). When adjustment is complete, position sleeve as described earlier, and tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-99090-S24457024742001061600000).
