REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. |
- Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes. On automatic transmission models, pull upward and remove shift lever handle. Remove shift indicator trim bezel. On manual transmission models, loosen lock nut on shift knob and remove shift knob. Remove shift boot.
- On 4WD models, Remove shift indicator trim bezel. On all models, open console lid and remove screws attaching floor of console bin to floor bracket. Remove screws attaching front of console to floor through shifter openings. (Scheme 2)
- Disconnect center console harness connectors. Remove console assembly from vehicle. Remove heater duct from floor to access Air Bag Control Module (ACM).
- Remove 3 screws attaching center console rear floor mounting bracket to floor. Disconnect ACM harness connector by squeezing connector latch tabs together. Remove screws attaching ACM to floor bracket. (Scheme 3) To install, reverse removal procedure. Torque ACM mounting nuts to 65 INCH lbs. (7.3 N.m).

- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove 2 screws at front edge of overhead console. Pull outward on edges of console near rear mounting bracket to disengage retaining tabs. (Scheme 4)
- Move overhead console forward to disengage rear mounting tab from headliner. Disconnect 2 harness connectors. Remove overhead console from vehicle. To install, reverse removal procedure. If compass/mini-trip computer is to be replaced, go to next step. If push-button controls are to be replaced, go to step 4.
- Remove 2 screws attaching forward end of compass to console. Carefully flex sides of console housing to clear compass display mounting pins. Disconnect all harness connectors. Remove compass display from vehicle. To install, reverse removal procedure.
- Disconnect harness connector from compass display. Remove 4 screws attaching push-button controls to overhead console. Remove push-button controls from overhead console. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Scheme 4
Disconnect negative battery cable. Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is located on left front inner fender. Remove PCM connector cover. Disconnect 3 PCM harness connectors. Remove 3 screws attaching PCM to left front inner fender. Remove PCM from vehicle. To install, reverse removal procedure. If PCM was replaced, new PCM must be programmed with Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), mileage and secret key data, or vehicle will not start. See PROGRAMMING .
Removal & Installation (Without Compass)
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove 2 screws at front of mini-dome light. Lower front of mini-dome light and pull forward to disengage rear mounting tab from headliner. Disconnect harness connector and remove mini-dome light. To install, reverse removal procedure.
Removal & Installation (With Compass)
Remove overhead console. See COMPASS/MINI-TRIP COMPUTER . Remove 6 screws attaching rear overhead console housing to console bezel. Carefully flex sides of console bezel to clear rear console housing tabs and remove housing. Remove 2 screws securing Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) module to console housing. Remove RKE module. To install, reverse removal procedure.
- Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 2 minutes. Remove knee bolster. If vehicle is equipped with tilt steering, move to lowest position. If vehicle is not equipped with tilt steering, loosen steering column upper retaining bolts to lower steering column. On all models, remove screws attaching upper and lower steering column covers. Remove steering column covers.
- Disconnect Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM) harness connector. see scheme 5 Pull downward on connector end of SKIM bracket to release from steering column. Rotate SKIM and mounting bracket downward and slide SKIM antenna ring from ignition lock cylinder. Use care when removing SKIM antenna ring from ignition lock cylinder.
- Remove SKIM from vehicle. To install, reverse removal procedure. On non-tilt steering column vehicles, torque steering column mounting bolts to 12.5 ft. lbs. (22 (N.m). If SKIM was replaced, new SKIM must be initialized, or vehicle will not start. See «PROGRAMMING»(ref-91240-S01390139442001030600000).
Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect Transmission Control Module (TCM) harness connector. see scheme 4 Remove mounting screws and TCM from vehicle. To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure harness is not twisted, kinked or touching any body panels.
