CHRYSLER COLLISION DETECTION BUS SYSTEM
Chrysler Collision Detection (CCD) bus is a pair of twisted wires traveling from module-to-module between 5 modules receiving and delivering coded information. These modules are Air Bag Control Module (ACM), Compass/Mini-Trip Computer (CMTC), instrument cluster, Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) module and Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM). Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and Transmission Control Module (TCM) are not part of body control system, but use CCD bus to communicate.
Coded information identifies message and its importance. When multiple messages attempt to access CCD bus at once, code assigns priority ranking.
CCD bus system uses 2 twisted wires and are called bus "+" (positive) and bus "-" (negative). Both wires carry approximately 2.5 volts. Network consists of some modules with "bias" and some with "termination".
Bias is part of voltage divider network that places both bus "+" and bus "-" at 2.5 volts. Termination is part of circuitry required to complete voltage divider network and also provide some electromagnetic protection for CCD bus. Terminations in all CCD applications have approximately 120 ohms resistance.
COMPASS/MINI-TRIP COMPUTER
Compass/Mini-Trip Computer (CMTC) is located in overhead console. CMTC will display information for compass direction, outside temperature, elapsed time, distance to empty, average fuel economy, instantaneous fuel economy and trip odometer. CMTC module is self-calibrated and requires no adjustment. Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) module is part of overhead console but can be serviced as a separate unit. CMTC can perform an independent self-test. This can be done using either DRB or pressing both US/M and STEP buttons simultaneously, and turning ignition switch to ON position. All segments of CMTC should illuminate while CMTC checks for internal function. If any internal failures are present, CMTC will display FAIL. If a problem with Chrysler Collision Detection (CCD) communication is present, CMTC will display CCD.
INSTRUMENT CLUSTER
Instrument cluster includes a speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, oil pressure gauge, water temperature gauge, voltmeter and a series of warning lights.
Powertrain Control Module (PCM) sends signals necessary for instrument cluster to position gauges. Instrument cluster receives these messages from Chrysler Collision Detection (CCD) bus and translates them into gauge positions. Body Control Module (BCM) sends status of some indicator lights and dimming level to instrument cluster over CCD bus when ignition switch is in ON or START positions. Other indicator lights are hard-wired directly to system being monitored. Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) status is sent to BCM from PCM over CCD bus. All other instrument cluster features only work when ignition switch is in ON position. Vehicle chime function and rear window defogger timer are part of instrument cluster circuit board.
Vacuum Florescent (VF) odometer/trip display works when ignition switch is in ON or START positions. BCM stores mileage information for odometer display. If CCD bus is not functioning, odometer will display dashes instead of mileage. BCM sends mileage message and dimming level message to vacuum fluorescent display when ignition switch is in ON position. PCM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) can be accessed using VF display by turning ignition switch from OFF to ON position 3 times.
Instrument cluster indicator lights controlled by CCD bus are as follows.
- Air Bag
- Cruise Control
- Low Fuel Warning
- Low Washer Fluid
- Upshift (M/T Only)
- Seat Belt
- Sentry Key Immobilizer
- Engine Temperature
- Battery Charge (If Equipped)
- Low Oil Pressure Warning (If Equipped)

Instrument cluster indicator lights hard-wired to monitored system are as follow
- Brake
- Full Time 4WD
- Part Time 4WD
- High Beam
- Left Turn Signal
- Right Turn Signal
- Liftgate Ajar
- ABS (Amber Light)
- Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL)
- SKIM
REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY
On vehicles equipped with Compass/Mini-Trip Computer (CMTC), Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) module is located in rear of overhead console. On vehicles not equipped with CMTC, RKE module is part of mini-dome light. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS . On all vehicles, when RKE module receives a valid signal from RKE transmitter, it will send a signal on bus to lock or unlock doors. When unlock button on remote keyless entry transmitter is pressed, doors will unlock and illuminated entry will turn on. Remote keyless entry transmitter uses radio frequency signals to communicate with RKE module.
POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE/SENTRY KEY IMMOBILIZER MODULE
Note. If Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has been replaced and correct Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and mileage have not be entered into new PCM, Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) will set in Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS), Air Bag Control Module (ACM) and Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM). Secret key data must be updated prior to starting vehicle.
- Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). see scheme 1 For Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) and air bag systems, enter correct VIN and current mileage into new Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Use scan tool to erase ABS and ACM DTCs.
- For Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM), connect scan tool and select THEFT ALARM, SKIM then MISCELLANEOUS. Place SKIM in secured access mode by using 4-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN). This number can be obtained from vehicle invoice or calling Chrysler customer center. Select UPDATE SECRET KEY DATA. SKIM data will automatically be transferred to PCM.
- Attempt to start engine. If engine starts and runs, programming is complete. If engine is unable to start, verify that programming procedure has been completed and check for related Technical Service Bulletins (TSB).
Note. Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) system has customer programmable chirp feature. This will enable activation of vehicle horn when vehicle is locked using RKE transmitter.
- Ensure Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter is within operating range. Press and hold lock button on transmitter for 5-10 seconds.
- While holding lock button, press and release unlock button. This will enable or disable chirp function of RKE system. To verify operation, lock vehicle using RKE transmitter. If horn does not operate as desired, repeat procedure.
Transmitter
Connect scan tool and follow on-screen instructions. Select THEFT ALARM, MISCELLANEOUS, then PROGRAMMING RKE. Select a position between 1 and 4. Power locks will cycle to indicate programming mode has been entered. Press unlock button on transmitter. Power locks will cycle again to indicate programming of that transmitter has been completed. Transmitters will go out of synchronization when batteries are dead or replaced, or if any button is pressed more than 128 times with transmitter out of operating range. To resynchronize transmitter, ensure transmitter is within operating range of vehicle and press and hold lock button until door locks cycle.
Programming Blank Sentry Keys Using Customer Learn Method
Note. This procedure is to program additional sentry keys (up to 8) beyond existing 2 sentry keys. At least 2 sentry keys programmed to current module must be available for programming of additional keys. If 2 sentry keys are not available, perform PROGRAMMING BLANK SENTRY KEY USING SCAN TOOL .
Perform this procedure for each new blank sentry key.
- Insert first valid sentry key into ignition lock cylinder and turn ignition switch to ON position for a minimum of 3 seconds but not longer than 15 seconds.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position and remove first valid sentry key from ignition lock cylinder.
- Within 15 seconds of removing first valid sentry key, insert second valid sentry key into ignition lock cylinder and turn ignition switch to ON position.
- When sentry key indicator on instrument cluster begins to flash and a single chime is heard (about 10 seconds after turning ignition on), turn ignition switch to OFF position and remove second valid ignition key.
- Within 60 seconds of removing second valid sentry key, insert blank sentry key into ignition lock cylinder and turn ignition switch to ON position. Sentry key indicator on instrument cluster will continue to flash and a single chime will be heard (about 10 seconds after turning ignition on). Sentry key indicator will stop flashing. Sentry key indicator will then turn on and off once. Blank sentry key is now programmed.
Initialization Procedure
- Obtain vehicle unique Personal Identification Number (PIN) number assigned to original SKIM from vehicle invoice or calling Chrysler customer center.
- Using scan tool, select THEFT ALARM, SKIM, then MISCELLANEOUS. Select SKIM MODULE REPLACED function.
- Enter SECURED ACCESS mode using unique 4-digit PIN. This number can be obtained from vehicle invoice or calling Chrysler Customer Center.
- Program vehicle VIN number into SKIM memory.
- Program country code into SKIM memory (U.S.).
- Transfer vehicle unique secret key data from PCM. This process will require SKIM module to be in SECURED ACCESS mode. PIN must be entered into scan tool before SKIM will enter SECURED ACCESS mode. Once SECURED ACCESS mode is active, SKIM will remain in that mode for 60 seconds.
- Program all customer keys into SKIM memory. This requires that SKIM be in SECURED ACCESS mode. SKIM will immediately exit SECURED ACCESS mode after each key is programmed.
